  • A new cultivar 'Hongan' was originated from an artificial cross between 'Fuji' and 'Jonathan' carried out at National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 1993. The cultivar was preliminarily selected among the elite siblings for its high fruit quality in 2002. After regional adaptability test at five districts for subsequent four years as 'Wonkyo Ga-32', it was finally selected in 2006. 'Hongan' is characterized by the following. Optimum harvest time is late September. Shape of the mature fruit at 309 g on mean weight is globosity with a light red skin on a greenish yellow ground and yellowish white flesh. The fruit contains favorable total soluble solids at $13.7^{\circ}Brix$ and an acidity at 0.28%. Safe storage period for the fruit is 3 weeks at room temperature. It is resistant to Bitter rot. 'Hongan' also reveals a physiological cross compatibility with leading cultivars such as 'Gamhong' and 'Tsugaru' in addition to its maternal parent 'Fuji'. Tree topology is semi-spreading with vigorous growth habit.

  • Agricultural sticky traps are used for forecasting flying insects, including fungus gnat adults. Forecasting using sticky trap is an important measure to determine pesticides or environmentally friendly control means. Sticky traps of various colors can be installed easily and quickly. The yellow sticky trap is most effective for forecasting fungus gnat adults. In addition, they are used for control purposes by mass trapping. We tested the optimum installation height of yellow sticky traps to forecast and control the fungus gnat adults effectively in the cultivation of mushroom and horticultural plants. The number of captured fungus gnat adults was highest on the second floor for button mushroom and oyster mushroom, 100 cm above the floor for sawdust shiitake mushroom, 20 cm under the floor for hydroponic strawberry, and 20 cm above the floor for hydroponic tomato. This suggests that sticky trap height should be installed differently depending on the cultivation type or environment for effective forecasting and control of fungus gnat adults.

  • Postharvest skin sooty dapple and decay disease of pear fruit often originates at small stain symptoms that occurred during harvest and handling. Experiments were conducted to characterize the effect of timing of application of disease control materials, and to evaluate sequential postharvest applications of fungicides or fungicides and bio-control agents. Fungicides and bio-control agents were increasingly less effective when the period between harvest and application was prolonged. Thiabendazole (TBZ) applied to fruit without artificial wounding or inoculation effectively reduced skin sooty and decay disease when applied within 3 weeks or 6 weeks in 2 years of study. TBZ, Fludioxonil and pyrimethanil were effective in controlling skin sooty and decay disease at artificial wounds inoculated with Cladosporium tenuissimum up to 14 days after inoculation. Application of TBZ at harvest followed 3 weeks later by application of Fludioxonil was superior to application of TBZ at harvest alone. Two bacterial biocontrol agents reduced skin sooty and decay disease at pear wounds inoculated with C. tenuissimum up to 14 days after inoculation with C. tenuissimum, but were ineffective when applied at 28 days after inoculation. Of possible sequential arrangements of fungicide and bio-control treatments, application of the most effective material promptly after harvest generally resulted in the highest level of disease control.

  • The plant defence activator, Acibenzolar-S-methyl [benzo (1,2,3) thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid-S-methyl ester, ASM] was assayed on tomato seedlings for its ability to induce resistance against Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of gray mold in tomato. Pre-treatment of plants with ASM reduced the severity of the disease as well as the growth of the mycelium in plants. In ASM treated plants, reduction in disease severity (up to 55%) was correlated with suppression of mycelia growth (up to 46.5%) during the time course of infection. In plants treated with ASM, activities of peroxidase were determined as markers of resistance. Applications of ASM induced Progressive and significant increase of the enzyme in locally treated tissues. Such responses were expressed earlier and with a much higher magnitude when ASM-treated seedlings were challenged with the pathogen, thus providing support to the concept that a signal produced by the pathogen is essential for triggering enhanced synthesis and accumulation of the enzymes. No such activities were observed in water-treated control plants. Therefore, the slower symptom development and reduction in mycelium growth in ASM treated plants might be due to the increase in activity of oxidative and antioxidative protection systems in plants.

  • 'Sweet Pinky' was developed by National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 1995. The seedling materials, obtained after selfing of dark pink medium variety 'Pinglong' from 1996 to 2002, were cultivated to 169 seedling lines. The dark pink medium-phalaenopsis '95-183-54' was selected for excellent fragrance and branching habit by individual selection. The selected line was multiplicated and the growth characteristics were investigated for the first examination from 2003 to 2007. It was named as 'Wonkyo F2-17' in 2008 and investigated for the second examination of growth characteristics. The examination was executed for stability, uniformity, yearly reproductibility, and public fancy. It was selected as a high quality cultivar with sweet fragrance and excellent branching habit from the selection council of new cultivars for agricultural products; thereafter, it was registered as variety 'Sweet Pinky' in 2008.

  • The problem of increased resistance to pesticides is caused by the management of Bemisia tabaci, which depends almost entirely on pesticides, and to solve this problem, we investigated the host preference of B. tabaci among herbal plants to develop a possible attractant for alternative control methods. Experiments were conducted in greenhouse tomatoes at the National Institute of Horticultural Science and Herbal Science in Wanju-gun. Major herbal plants such as lemon balm, chocolate mint, rose geranium, and apple geranium were installed 50cm from the ground and 30cm from the top of the tomatoes, then the density of B. tabaci was investigated. As a result of examining the density of B. tabaci by the location of the herbal plants, it was found that the lemon balm location showed the highest B. tabaci density while rose geranium and apple geranium were rather avoided. These results are expected to be helpful in the development of alternative B. tabaci control methods using herbal plants including attractants, repellents, and trap plants.

  • Pink mold rot of tomato occurred very severly on tomato farm in Paju, Gyounggi Province, Korea, in July 2005. The infected fruits were dropped and abandoned and the symptoms were similar to calcium deficient tomatoes. But symptom was a slight water-soaked area on or near the blossom end of the fruit and firm greyish-brown lesions were most found at the blossom-end of affected fruits. lesions caused by the pink mold fungus possess a water soaked margin and rise to characteristic orange-pink spores. Also when the diseased tomato was cut, the inside of tomatoes showed completely rotted with pink mold. The causal fungus was identified as Trichothecium roseum based on mycological characteristics. This is the first report of T. roseum infecting greenhouse tomatoes in Korea.
