  • With a growing concern about the state of infrastructure worldwide, the demand for the development of reliable nondestructive testing techniques (NDT) is ever increasing. Among possible NDT techniques. microwave method is proven to be effective in fast and non-contact inspection of concrete structures and inclusions inside concrete. It is also found that the microwave method has a potential in detecting the delamination between fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plate and concrete. On the other hand, ultrasonic method can be another way to find the delamination. In this paper, the research work needed for the development of a reliable microwave method and ultrasonic method is studied in actual measurements of concrete specimens reinforced with FRP. Concrete specimens are made with FRP and artificial delamination inside. A microwave measurement system with horn antennas with high center frequency and broad frequency bandwidth are used to image inside concrete specimens for the detection of debonding. between concrete and FRP. Also, the equipment of ultrasonic method which is commercialized are used at the same condition. Both of the results are analyzed in comparison of each other. Microwave and ultrasonic methods have been used for the detection of debonding between concrete and fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP).

  • In this paper, a method for measuring the dielectric constant of a planar dielectric substrate using the free space material constant measurement method in a general measurement environment is proposed. Two horn antennas and a network analyzer were used for S-parameter measurement and the transmission and reflection coefficients of a planar dielectric substrate were calculated from the measurement results. To obtain a reliable dielectric constant in a low-precision-measurement environment, only the magnitude of the transmission coefficient, which has a small error due to the measurement environment, is used for dielectric constant estimation. Finally, the dielectric constant is determined by comparing the measured results at different frequencies.

  • The objective of this study is to measure backscattering coefficients of paddy rice using L, C, X-bands scatterometer system during a rice growth period. The measurement was conducted at an experimental field located in National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (NIAST), Suwon, Korea. The rice cultivar was a kind of Japonica type, called Chuchung. The scatterometer system consists of dual-polarimetric square horn antennas, HP8720D vector network analyzer (20MHz ${\sim}$ 20GHz), RF cables, and a personal computer that controls frequency, polarization and data storage. The scatterometer system is calibrated using a calibration kit (3.5mm, 85052D). The backscattering coefficients were calculated by applying radar equation for the measured at incidence angles between $20^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ for four polarization (HR, VV, HV, VH), respectively, and compared with rice growth data such as plant height, stem number, biomass, dry weight and LAI that were collected at time of each scatterometer measurement simultaneously.

  • A radio telescope which has been dominantly used for millimeter and submillimeter wave radio astronomy is a cassegrain antenna. A various receivers with specified observing bandwidths are installed on cassegrain antenna so as to carry out to investigate a diverse radio astronomy. A beam guiding system should be required so that a various receiver can be conducted their own observational frequency bands. The beam guiding system based on Gaussian beam transmission theory consists of quasi-optical circuit used such ellipsoidal mirror, dielectric lens and feed horn. In this paper, not only Gaussian beam transformations based on Gaussian beam theory are presented, but also design techniques for quasi-optical circuit are given. By using proposed design techniques, both Gaussian beam quasi-optical circuits to be used for cassegrain antenna and design results are also described. Properties of key focusing elements such ellipsoidal mirror and dielectric lens and feed horn are also discussed. It is expected that beam guiding system to be applied cassegrain antenna could be easily designed by using proposed design techniques.

  • This paper presented measurement results of scattering characteristics of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma at atmospheric pressure. In this paper, plasma actuator is fabricated by parallel connecting of basic configuration of DBD plasma actuator, then plasma could be generated by applying 14 kV, 4 kHz of high voltage generator. In order to measure the scattering characteristics of DBD plasma, in this paper, two horn antennas and vector network analyzer are used to compare the S-parameter. Because of the structure of fabricated plasma generator, different result is obtained as antenna polarization changes. When antenna polarization is parallel to electrodes of plasma generator, the scattered field is reduced by 2 dB in maximum. In addition, for parallel polarization case, PEC is set up behind the plasma generator to measure backward scattered field. When the observation angles are $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, the amount of reduced scattered field is 2 dB in maximum at 5 GHz.

  • In this paper, an 1.5Gbit/s wireless data transmission system using the carrier frequency of 300 GHz band was implemented. The RF front-end was composed of schottky diode sub-harmonic mixer, frequency tripler, and horn antennas for transmitter and receiver, respectively. The LO frequencies of sub-harmonic mixer are 150GHz for transmit chain and 156GHz for receive chain. The ASK(Amplitude Shift Keying) modulation was used in the transmitter and the envelope detection method was used in the heterodyne receiver. The conversion loss of sub-harmonic mixer and implementation system loss were measured to be 9.8dB and 1.2dB, respectively. The 1.5Gbit/s video signal with HD-SDI format was transmitted over wireless distance of 40cm without optical lens(4.2m with optical lens) and displayed on HDTV at the transmitted average output power of $20{\mu}W$.

  • The design theory and experimental results of a true random noise radar system are presented in this paper. Target range information can be extracted precisely by correlation processing between the delayed reference and the signal received from a target, and the velocity information by the Doppler processing with successive correlation data. A K-band noise radar system was designed using random FM noise signal, and the characteristics of the fabricated system were examined with laboratory and outdoor experiments. A C-band random FM noise signal was generated by applying a low-frequency white Gaussian noise source to VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator), and a K-band Tx noise signal with 100 MHz bandwidth was obtained by using a following frequency multiplier. Two modified wave-guide horn arrays were designed and fabricated, and used for the Tx and Rx antennas. The required amount of Tx/Rx isolation was attained by using a coupling cancellation circuit as well as keeping them apart with predetermined spacing. A double down-conversion scheme was used in the Rx and reference channels, respectively, for easy post processing such as correlation and Doppler processing. The implemented noise radar performance was examined with a moving bicycle and a very high-speed target with a velocity of 150 m/s. The results extracted by the Matlab simulation using the logging data were found to be in a reasonable agreement with the expected results.

  • Gregorian offset dual-shaped reflector antennas have been widely used in the satellite communication systems for their high gain and low sidelobe characteristics. However, in this paper, it is designed as the CATR(Compact Antenna Test Range) reflector system, and its near-field characteristics are investigated. The CATR facility needs to provide an uniform plane wave with the minimum amplitude and phase ripple and the low cross polarization to the test region. Therefore, the reflector near-field patterns are calculated and presented with the variations of the aperture power distribution, the feed horn pattern, and the distance from the aperture to the test zone. Also, the offset dual-shaped reflector is fabricated at 30 GHz, and its near-field patterns are measured. The measured results are in good agreement with the calculated results. From theses results, we confirm that the designed offset dual-shaped reflector can be used as the reflector system for the compact antenna test range.

  • The COMS (Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite) is a hybrid geostationary satellite including communication, ocean, and meteorological payloads. The COMS includes the MODCS (Meteorological and Ocean Data Communication Subsystem) which provides transmitting the raw data collected by meteorological payload called MI (Meteorological Imager) and ocean payload named GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) to the ground station, and relaying the meteorological data processed on the ground to the end-user stations. Here, for the L-band transmit antenna transmitting SD (Sensor Data) signal and the processed signal, from the system point of view, it is required to estimate the combined antenna gain when the L-band transmit is placed with MI and GOCI payloads on the earth panel of COMS. First of all, the L-band transmit horn is designed and analyzed for the requirements given, and then after placing it on the earth panel, the combined gain analysis is performed using three different analysis methods. It's shown that the obtained gain patterns are very similar among three different analysis methods. Finally the antenna gain degradation of less than 0.5 dB is estimated.
