  • This paper presents the experimental and theoretical results of the dynamic responses of a pendular energy extractor in a two-dimensional wave channel. By adopting a wave maker with varying wave height and period, the dynamic responses of the pendular buoy were experimentally obtained. Furthermore, with the aid of the co-simulation of moving particle analysis and rigid dynamic analysis, the dynamic responses of the pendular system were evaluated. In order to validate the feasibility of the proposed wave power generator, the force tuning of the pendular system with restoring energy was carried out. The results provide proof of concept data for the development and design of a commercial model for horizontal wave power generators in the shoreline area.

  • The floating body discussed in this study is a 2-D rectangular floating unit supported by four vertical piles at its corners. Structures of this type are frequently seen as floating piers for the crafts in a small harbour. The movement in some modes of motion of such a flating body is fully or partially restrincted by the piles. The authors(Kim et al. 1994) carried out a series of model tests on its wave control function, its motion and the loads on piles. The experimental results showed that a certain degree of intial constriction force which clamps the floating unit in the horizontal direction can effectively reduce the body motion and wave energy without increasing mooring forces. This may be due to the friction forces occuring between the piles and the rollers installed in the mooring equipments on the floating unit. In this paper, we develop a numerical model for the prediction of wave transformation and floating body motions, where the friction force is idealized as the Coulomb friction and linearized into a damping force using the equivalent damping cofficient. This linearization is verified by comparing the results of motions between the linear and nonlinear analysis of the ezuations of motion. We further compare the caculation results by the linear model with the experimental results and discuss the effect of the friction force or the constriction force on body motions and wave energy dissipation.

  • The tension leg platform (TLP) is one of the compliant structures which are generally used for deep water oil exploration. With respect to the horizontal degrees of freedom, it behaves like a floating structure moored by vertical tethers which are pretension due to the excess buoyancy of the platform, whereas with respect to the vertical degrees of freedom, it is stiff and resembles a fixed structure and is not allowed to float freely. In the current study, a numerical study for square TLP using modified Morison equation was carried out in the time domain with water particle kinematics using Airy's linear wave theory to investigate the effect of changing the tether tension force on the stiffness matrix of TLP's, the dynamic behavior of TLP's; and on the fatigue stresses in the cables. The effect was investigated for different parameters of the hydrodynamic forces such as wave periods, and wave heights. The numerical study takes into consideration the effect of coupling between various degrees of freedom. The stiffness of the TLP was derived from a combination of hydrostatic restoring forces and restoring forces due to cables. Nonlinear equation was solved using Newmark's beta integration method. Only uni-directional waves in the surge direction was considered in the analysis. It was found that for short wave periods (i.e., 10 sec.), the surge response consisted of small amplitude oscillations about a displaced position that is significantly dependent on tether tension force, wave height; whereas for longer wave periods, the surge response showed high amplitude oscillations that is significantly dependent on wave height, and that special attention should be given to tethers fatigue because of their high tensile static and dynamic stress.

  • Numerical analysis of slop stability is presented using seismic displacement, response seismic coefficient, and earthquake response analysis methods. In seismic displacement and response seismic coefficient methods, horizontal static seismic force is considered as 0.2g while vertical static seismic force is not considered in analysis. For earthquake response analysis Hahinoha-wave is applied, It is found from result that analysis using response seismic coefficient method is much more conservative than that using seismic displacement method Also, analysis result using earthquake response analysis method is somewhat less conservative about 25% when compared with that using seismic displacement method.

  • The properties of Tuned Liquid Damper are investigated theoretically. In this study, numerical model is a nonlinear model for a rectangular TLD under horizontal motion on the basis of the shallow water wave theory, where the damping of the liquid motion is included semianalytically. For TLD subjected to harmonic external force, the liquid motion of TLD is simulated. Analysis result is showed that liquid motion in TLD is strongli nonlinear even under small excitation.

  • In this study, two-dimensional physical experiment was carried out to examine the applicability of the three formulas(Takahashi and Shimosako, 1994; Tabet-Aoul and Lambert, 2003; Li, 2007), which were proposed to calculate the wave forces acting on perforated caisson breakwaters. In order to quantitatively compare the measured with the estimated values based on the wave formulas, the refined index of agreement and the coefficient of determination were calculated, by which the degree of agreement was evaluated. Among the three wave formulas, DUT formula (Li, 2007) showed the smallest deviation from the measured forces, whereas Takahashi formula (Takahashi and Shimosako, 1994) showed the largest deviation. Meanwhile, comparison of the magnitude of the measured wave forces with those from the three formulas revealed that DUT formula slightly underestimate, while the others overestimate the measured forces.

  • A composite breakwater with an upper horizontal porous plate and a lower rubble mound is proposed and studied in this work. By means of matched eigenfunction expansions, a semi-analytical solution is developed for analyzing the hydrodynamic performance of the breakwater. The semi-analytical solution is verified by known solutions for special cases and an independently developed multi-domain boundary element method solution. Numerical examples are given to examine the reflection, transmission and energy loss coefficients of the breakwater and the wave force acting on the horizontal porous plate. Some useful results are presented for engineering applications.

  • In this paper, centrifuge model tests and numerical analysis on the breakwater structure were performed to investigate the stability and behavior of breakwater in field. In centrifuge model tests, construction sequence of breakwater structure such as preparation of weathered rock and sand deposit, construction of D.C.M, rubble mound with crushed stones and installment of breakwater structure was reconstructed like field condition and the behavior of ground settlement and breakwater displacement during stage of construction was observed during tests. For the final stage of simulating the horizontal movement of breakwater due to wave force, horizontal load was applied by horizontal loading apparatus being specially designed so that horizontal displacement of structure could be observed. Numerical analysis were also carried out and its results were compared with test results to assess the property of centrifuge model tests with respect to the behavior of structure as well as ground.

  • In this paper, we study the response of several anisotropic systems to buried transient line loads. The problem is mathematically formulated based on the equations of motion in the constitutive relations. The load is in form of a normal stress acting with arbitrary axis on the plane of monoclinic symmetry. Plane wave equation is coupled with vertical shear wave, longitudinal wave and horizontal shear wave. We first considered the equation of motion in reference coordinate system, where the line load is coincident with symmetry axis of the orthotrioic material. Then the equation of motion is transformed with respect to general coordiante system with azimuthal angle by using transformation tensor. The load is first described as a body force in the equations of the motion for the infinite media and then it is mathematically characterized. Subsequently the results for semi-infinite spaces is also obtained by using superposition of the infinite medium solution together with a scattered solution from the free surface. Consequently explicit solutions for the displacements are obtained by using Cargniard-DeHoop contour. Numerical results which are drawn from concrete examples of orthotropic material belonging to monoclinic symmetry are demonstrated.

  • Earth fissures with several kilometers will inevitably approach or cross the metro line, significantly threatening the safety of the underground structure in the earth fissure site. However, the influence of the earth fissure site's amplification effect on the metro station's dynamic response is still unclear. A representative earth fissure in Xi'an was taken as an example to establish a numerical model of a metro station in the earth fissure site. The dynamic response characteristics of the metro stations at different distances from the earth fissure under various seismic waves were calculated. The results show that the existence of the earth fissure significantly amplifies the dynamic response of the nearby underground structures. The responses of the axial force, shear force, bending moment, normal stress, horizontal displacement, inter-story drift, and relative slip of the metro station were all amplified within a specific influence range. The amplification effect increases with the seismic wave intensity. The amplification effect caused by the earth fissure has relatively weak impacts on the axial shear, shear force, bending movement, normal stress, and horizontal movement; slightly larger impacts on the inter-story drift and acceleration; and a significant impact on the relative slip. The influence ranges of the axial force and normal stress are approximately 20 m. The influence ranges of the acceleration and inter-story drift can reach 30 m. Therefore, the seismic fortification level of the underground structure in the earth fissure site needs to be improved.
