In this study, we developed a micropile equipped with ground fixing wedge device which is able to ensure the bearing capacity early before grouting by expanding the tip and exerting the tip surface friction while compressing and expanding the tip of the micropile during loading. The purpose of this study is to verify the applicability of the developed micropile to the ground with various kinds of strength and to compare its characteristics with those of the simple tip expansion micropile. A new test system including a model soil box which can measure the tip resistance and the tip skin friction separately was devised. The loading test was carried out according to the changes of the ground strength and the tip cross section using the devised test systems. As a result of the test, it was found that the developed micropile increased the tip skin friction due to the wedge horizontal force as the soil strength increased and could be applied more effectively to the ground with the strength not lower than the strength of the weathered rock. In addition, it was found that additional bearing capacity could be obtained due to the tip cross section expansion and the wedge horizontal force exertion even in the ground with the strength below the weathered rock strength.

Recently, because of environment, cost, supply and demand factors, though applying sea-sand as horizontal drains is getting difficult that usage of Gravel has been growing in large size of construction sites, Study on engineering properties and behavior characteristics of Gravel stratum is not thoroughgoing enough. We have applied Gravel Mat as the horizontal drains in O O construction site. We also conducted several field tests such as Material property test, Geosynthetics damage test with Repeated load, Discharge capacity test performed by inflow of upper soil and In-situ PBD Penetration test to review the application of Gravel Mat. Test results show that Gravel Mat is not only advantageous in Trafficability and Water drainage by Consolidation due to its great Internal friction angle and Permeability, but also easy to penetrate with Mandrel and has great discharge capacity and guarantee of the stability against geosynthetics damage at the same time. With these benefits Gravel Mat shows great application in fields.
In this study, a three-pad gas foil journal bearing with a diameter of 40 mm and an axial length of 35 mm was modeled to predict the static and dynamic performances with regard to an increasing mechanical preload. The Reynolds equation for an isothermal and isoviscous ideal gas was coupled with a simple elastic foundation foil model to calculate the hydrodynamic pressure solution iteratively. In the prediction results, the journal eccentricity, journal attitude angle, and minimum film thickness decreased, but the friction torque increased with the preload. A quick comparison implied a lower load capacity but higher stability for a three-pad gas foil bearing compared to a one-pad gas foil journal bearing. The direct stiffness coefficients increased with the preload, but the cross-coupled stiffness coefficients decreased. The direct damping coefficient increased in the horizontal direction but decreased in the vertical direction as the preload increased. These model predictions will be useful as a benchmark against experimental test data.
Recently, foundations of heavy structures such as bridge abutments have been built on slopes or near the crest of slopes at an increasing rate. Because the bearing capacity of such foundations is considerably lower than the bearing capacity of the same soil on a level ground, deep footings such as piles and caissons are often used. However, the costs of such methods are generally very high. One of the new techniques to overcome the problem is to place reinforcing members such as geosynthetics or metal strips horizontally at some depths beneath the footings. Rational methods of analysis to predict the bearing capacity of footings in reinforced slopes are therefore needed. This paper proposes an analytical method for estimating the increase in bearing capacity gained from the included horizontal strips or ties of tensile reinforcing in the foundation soil below the footing built near the crest of a slope. A failure mechanism, including the concept of'wide slab effect', adopted in the present study for analyzing the bearing capacity of foundations in reinforced slopes, is established through the observed model test behaviors described by Binquet SE Lee and Huang et al, and the Boussinesq solutions. The analytical results are then compared with the experimental data described in the paper by Huang et al. Also in order to properly evaluate the soil reinforcement interaction, typical pullout test values of the apparent friction coefficient, which usually vary with depths owing to both the increase of the shearing volume and the increase in local stress caused by soil dilatancy, are analyzed and related functionally. Furthermore, analytical parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effect and significance of various pertinent parameters associated with design of reinforced slope foundations. Granular compaction piles have the load bearing capacity of the soft ground increase and have the settlement of foundation built on the reinforced soil reduce. The granular compaction group piles also have the consolidation of the soft ground accelerate and have the liquefaction caused by earthquake prevent using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. The Granular compaction piles are constructed by grouping it with a raft system. The confining pressure at the center of bulging failure depth is a major variable in relation to estimate for the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles. Therefore, a share of loading is determined considering the effect of load concentration ratio between the granular compaction piles and surrounding soils, and varies the magnitude of the confining pressure. In this study, method for the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity is proposed to apply a change of the horizontal pressure considering bulging failure depth, surcharge and loaded area. Also, the ultimate bearing capacity of the granular compaction piles is evaluated on the basis of previous study on the estimation of the ultimate bearing capacity and compared with the results obtained from laboratory scale model tests. And using the result from laboratory model tests, it is studied increase effect of the bearing capacity on the granular compaction piles and variance of coefficient of consolidation for the ground.

In this study, the horizontal loading tests of 10ton and 200ton capacity of LRB(lead-rubber bearing) were performed for the evaluation of the dynamic properties of the LRB. It is noted from the test results that dynamic properties of the LRB are dependent on the loading frequency, vertical load and shear strain. A Slender bearing subjected to large deformation will tend to develop plastic hinges in the end regions of the lead plug which will cause the failure of the lead plug. It is recommended that the appropriate mechanical properties of LRB considering the level of structural response and input ground motion should be used in the design of base isolated structures.

Micropiles are widely used in construction field to enhance bearing capacity and reduce settlement of existing foundation. It has various benefits such as low construction expense, simple installation process, and small construction equipment. Recently, new microple equipped with the base expansion structure at the end has been developed to improve the foundation bearing capacity. The improvement of load capacity can be conceptually achieved by expanding the base expansion structure when a load is applied to the micropile. However, the expansion mechanism of the base expansion structure and the improvement of load capacity of the micropile were not yet experimentally validated. Therefore, in this study, a series of centrifuge model tests was performed to evaluate the effect of the base expansion structure on the improvement of load capacity. Two types of soil, sand and weathered rock, were prepared and the loading tests were performed using the real micropile with the base expansion structure. During the tests, the earth pressures surrounding the base expansion structure were monitored. As a result, when a load of 30 kN was applied to the micropile, the increase in the ratio of the horizontal to vertical pressure increment (∆σh/∆σ𝜈) ranged from 0.4 to 0.58 in sand and ∆σh/∆σ𝜈 = 0.19 in weathered rock, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the increase in the horizontal earth pressure adjacent to the base expansion structure will improve the bearing capacity of the micropile.
This study investigated the influence of scale ratio and vertical load on the seismic performance of Puzuo joints in traditional Chinese timber structures. Three low-cyclic reversed loading tests were conducted on three scaled specimens of Bujian Puzuo in Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. This study focused on the deformation patterns and analyzed seismic performance under varying scale ratios and vertical loads. The results indicated that the slip and rotational deformations of Bujian Puzuo were the primary deformations. The scale of the specimen did not affect the layer where the maximum interlayer slip occurred, but it did decrease the proportion of slip deformation. Conversely, the reducing vertical load caused the layer with the maximum slippage and the position of the damaged Dou components to shift upward, and the proportion of slip deformation increased. When the vertical load was decreased by 3.7 times, the maximum horizontal bearing capacity under positive and negative loadings, initial stiffness, and energy dissipation of the specimen decreased by approximately 60%, 58.79%, 69.62%, and 57.93%, respectively. The horizontal bearing capacity under positive loading and energy dissipation of the specimen increased by 35.63% and 131.54%, when the specimen scale was doubled and the vertical load was increased by 15 times.
