  • An honeycomb/smooth land seal alternating with the honeycomb seal is suggested for structural enhancement in high pressure turbomachinery. Governing equations are derived for an honeycomb/smooth land annular gas seal based on Hirs' lubrication theory and Moody's friction factor model for smooth land and empirical friction factor model for honeycomb land. By using a perturbation analysis and a numerical integration method, the governing equations are solved to yield leakage and the corresponding dynamic coefficients developed by the seal. Theoretical results show that the leakage increases and rotordynamic stability decreases as increasing the length of smooth land part in the honeycomb/smooth land seal.

  • Honeycomb seals are used widely in gas turbines due to their good sealing performance and rotor-dynamic stability. Three-Dimensional complex flows in a honeycomb seal were analyzed in the present study. Friction factors were computed to predict the performance of a honeycomb seal based on pressure drop results for various honeycomb cell geometry and Reynolds numbers. Computed results for friction factor are compared to the available experimental data. Unlike in the experiment, where 'Friction-Factor Jump' phenomena are reported for some cases, computed results show no jump phenomena. The friction factors, however, are in good agreement with the experiment in no-jump cases.

  • This study is to analyze the rotordynamic effect of surface-friction- factor characteristics on an annular seal. The honeycomb geometry which shows friction-factor-jump phenomena is used in this study. A rotordynamic analysis for a contered annular seal has been developed by incorporating empirical friction-factor model for honeycomb stator surfaces. The results of the analysis for the honeycomb seal showing the friction-factor jump is compared to the non- friction-factor-jump case. The results yield that the friction-factor-jump decreasesdirect stiffness and cross coupled stiffness coefficients, and increases damping coefficient to stabilize rotating machinery in a rotordynamic point of view. The analysis of the honeyeomb seal for the friction-factor-jump case shows reasonably good compared to experimental results, especially, for cross coupled and damping coeffcients.

  • Recently, There are many studies in progress in order to improve the efficiency of the gas turbine. Leakage in losses of the gas turbine account for the largest proportion. Seal is a sealing device to reduce the flow from leaking by the pressure difference inside the turbine. Compressor has another value according to the shape and pressure conditions in each stage. Thus, it is necessary to seal design for boundary conditions in order to minimize leakage. At the actual operating conditions of the compressor, numerical analysis of honeycomb labyrinth seal was performed in accordance with pressure, temperature, rotor speed for CFD. As a result, when the temperature increases, the leakage is decreased. Also, when the pressure increases linearly with increased leakage, and there was no effect of the rotation speed.

  • Friction-factors for honeycomb surfaces are measured with a flat plate tester. The flat plate test apparatus is described and method is discussed for determining the friction-factor experimentally. The friction-factor is calculated for the flat plate test based on the Fanno-line flow. The test parameters are honeycomb cell width, depth, clearance, inlet pressure, and Reynolds number(or Mach number). A new empirical friction-factor model for honeycomb surfaces are developed as a function of these parameters.

  • The analysis of lateral hydrodynamic forces from the compressor labyrinth seals is presented. The basic equations are derived using a two-control-volume model for compressible flow. Blasius' wall friction-factor formula and jet flow theory are used for the calculation of the wall shear stresses and the recirculation velocity in the cavity. Linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about a centered position by an expansion in the eccentricity ratio. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the labyrinth seal. The rotordynamic analysis for the balance drum labyrinth seal of an ethylene refrigeration compressor is carried out. The results of rotordynamic characteristic of the labyrinth seal and comparisons with other types of seal, honeycomb seal and smooth seal, are presented.

  • In this paper, the model to develop the forming process for turbine seal is suggested. And numerical approach for the shape design of the turbine seal is examined. Because of the thin thickness of the turbine seal, the seal is easily fractured in the manufacturing process. The main factors of the seal manufacturing consist of addendum angle and dedendum angle, fillet on the addendum face, number of the gear teeth, sheet initial location and gear initial location, rake and vertical clearance. The structure and shape of seal are modeled using the commercial 3D mechanical design program, CATIA(V5/R20). Also, rolling process to manufacture the turbine seal is analyzed using DEFORM$^{TM}$-3D(V11), commercial forming analysis software and runs under PC workstation. This study focused on the shape design of turbine seal. Through this research, the main factors to make the turbine seal for airplane turbine engine can be obtained. This study results are reflected to the shape design for turbine seal.

  • One of the most critical issues in sol id oxide fuel cell (SOFC)running on hydrocarbon fuels is the risk of carbon formation from the fuel gas. The simple method to reduce the risk of carbon formation from the reactions is to add steam to the fuel stream, leading to the carbon gasification react ion. However, the addition of steam to fuel is not appropriate for the auxiliary power unit (APU) and potable power generation (PPG) systems due to an increase of complexity and bulkiness. In this regard, many researchers have focused on so-called 'direct methane' operation of SOFC, which works with dry methane without coking. However, coking can be suppressed only by the operation with a high current density, which may be a drawback especially for the APU and PPG systems. The single chamber fuel cell (SC-SOFC) is a novel simplification of the conventional SOFC into which a premixed fuel/air mixture is introduced. It relies on the selectivity of the anode and cathode catalysts to generate a chemical potential gradient across the cell. Moreover it allows compact and seal-free stack design. In this study, we fabricated honeycomb type mixed-gas fuel cell (MGFC) which has advantages of stacking to the axial direction and increasing volume power density. Honeycomb-structured SOFC with four channels was prepared by dry pressing method. Two alternative channels were coated with electrolyte and cathode slurry in order to make cathodic reaction sites. We will discuss that the anode supported honeycomb type cell running on mixed gas condition.
