To investigate numerically the removal behavior of carbon dioxide in a hollow fiber membrane contactor, the system controlling equations were developed including the nonlinear reversible reaction terms. The reversible chemical reactions were incorporated in the system controlling equations, resulting in the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations which could describe either the absorption of the desorption of carbon dioxide. The computer program was coded using the Fortran language and run with a personal computer to find out the effects of the system variables: the pressures of absorbed and desorbed gases, the absorbent flow rate, the concentration of potassium carbonate, the fiber diameter and the length.
A novel process was developed to simultaneously produce invertase and yeast extract from baker's yeast using ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF) membrane processing. After the extraction of invertase under the optimal condition obtained in this study, invertase was separated from yeast cells using a hollow fiber membrane with a pore size of 0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The resulting permeate containing invertase was concentrated using a hollow fiber membrane with a nominal molecular weight cut-off of 30 kDa. The yeast cell and permeate solutions, which were obtained after MF and UF membrane processing, respectively, were mixed together, and the autolysis was performed at 50$^{\circ}C$ in the presence of 5% (w/v) ethanol and 1% (w/v) NaCl. As a result, the yeast extract and invertase could be simultaneously produced from baker's yeast by this novel process.
Constant rate permeat experiments using polyethylene hollow fiber membranes were conducted in order to treat dam water for potable purposes. The experiments consisted of two series. One series consisted of six bench scale apparatuses, each having a $0.4m^2$ nominal permeat area, which were applied in determining the optimum operating conditions. The other series was comprised of two pilot scale plant, each having a $40m^2$ nominal permeat area. Both series were operated for six months. Coagulant was not used in any of the experiments. To suppress an increase in differential pressure between the inlet and outlet of the membrane, a hydrophilic membrane was found to be better than a hydrophobic membrane. Also, permeat flux should not be more than 0.03m/h, and air bubbling-washing for 1 minute should be conducted at 180 minutes intervals or less.

There is a possibility of the production of the air bubbles in membrane pores due to the reduction in pressure during membrane filtration. The effect of fine air bubbles from dissolved gases on microfiltration was investigated in the submerged membrane bio-reactor (SMBR). The $R_{air}$ (air bubble resistance) was defined as the filtration resistance due to the air bubbles formed from the gasification of dissolved gases. From the results of filtration tests using pure water with changes in the dissolved oxygen concentration, the air bubbles from dissolved gases were confirmed to act as a foulant and; thus, increase the filtration resistance. The standard pore blocking and cake filtration models, SPBM and CFM, respectively, were applied to investigate the mechanism of air bubble fouling on a hollow fiber membrane. However, the application of the SPBM and CFM were limited in explaining the mechanism due to the properties of air bubble. With a simple comparison of the different filtration resistances, the $R_{air}$ portion was below 1% of the total filtration resistance during sludge filtration. Therefore, the air bubbles from dissolved gases would only be a minor foulant in the SMBR. However, under the conditions of a high gasification rate from dissolved gases, the effect of air bubble fouling should be considered in microfiltration.
