  • From several researches, recently, it was found that using hollowed precast concrete (HPC) column made more compact concrete casting in joint region possible than using normal solid PC (Precast concrete) column. Therefore, the rigidity of joints can be improved like those of monolithic reinforced concrete (RC). After filling the hollow with grout concrete, however, it is expected that the HPC column behaviors like composite structure since PC element and grout concrete have different materials as well as there is a contact surface between two elements. These may affect the structural behavior and strength of the composite column. A compressive strength test was performed for the HPC column with parameter of hollow ratio for the case with and without grout in the hollow and the result is presented in this paper. The hollow ratios in the test are 35, 50 and 59% of whole section of column. Concentrated axial force was applied to top of the specimens supported as pin connection for both ends. In addition, finite element (FE) analysis was performed to simulate the failure behavior of HPC column for axial compression. As a result, it was found that the hollow ratio did not affect the initial stiffness of HPC filled with grout regardless of the strength difference of HPC and grout. However the strength was increased inversely corresponding to the hollow ratio. The structural capacity of HPC without grout closely related to the hollow size. Especially, the local collapse governs the overall failure when the thickness of HPC is too thin. Based on these effect, a suitable equation was suggested for calculation of the compressive strength of HPC column with or without grout. FE analysis considering the contact surface between HPC and grout produced a good result matched to the test result.

  • In this research Sagnac interferometer three different types of mandrel are suggested and this fiber optic sensor is using in monitoring of electric transformer. Vibration characteristics of those mandrels were analyzed and finally more sensitivity mandrel are suggested. Three different mandrels using in fiber optic sensor are hollow cylinder with outer bump, pure hollow cylinder, hollow cylinder with inner bump. Natural frequencies and mode shapes are investigated using finite element method. Mode shape are considered at the frequency range from 2 kHz to 20 kHz. Fundamental dimensions of the hollow cylinder type's mandrel are 30 mm in outer diameter, 50 mm in length, 1 mm in cylinder thickness, $2mm{\times}2mm$ in bump size. Based on the finite element results, when the outer acoustic frequency is near 11 kHz outer bump type and hollow cylinder can get higher sensitivity. Near 17 kHz outer bump and inner bump mandrel can get higher sensitivity. Near 20 kHz hollow cylinder and inner bump mandrel is useful. This results can be applied to design of fiber optic sensor using in monitoring the electrical transformer. Several MHz of outer acoustic frequency can be easily detected using more sensitive mandrel in pursuing expand this technique.

  • Carbon membrane materials have received considerable attention for the gas separation including hydrocarbon mixture of ingredients of the volatile organic compounds(VOCs) because they possess their higher selectivity, permeability, and thermal stability than the polymeric membranes. The use of activated carbon membranes makes it possible to separate continuously the VOCs mixture by the selective adsorption-diffusion mechanism which the condensable components are preferentially adsorbed in to the micropores of the membrane. The activated carbon hollow fiber membranes with uniform adsorptive micropores on the wall of open pores and the surface of the membranes have been fabricated by the carbonization of a thin film of phenolic resin deposited on porous alumina hollow fiber membrane. Oxidation, carbonization, and activation processing variables were controlled under different conditions in order to improve the separation characteristics of the activated carbon membrane. Properties of activated carbon hollow fiber membranes and the characterization of a gas permeation by pyrolysis conditions were studied. As the result, the activated carbon hollow fiber membranes with good separation capabilities by the molecular size mechanism as well as selective adsorption on the pores surface followed by surface diffusion effective in the recovery hydrocarbons have been obtained. Therefore, these activated carbon membranes prepared in this study are shown as promising candidate membrane for separation of VOCs.

  • This study was conducted to improve the membrane characteristics and performance by increasing hydrophilicity by adding additives to the ultrafiltration polysulfone (PSf) hollow fiber membrane. The mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by dispersing 15 nm of fumed silica (FS) in the spinning solution at 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 wt%. SEM analysis was carried out to confirm the cross-section and surface condition. It was confirmed that mean pore radius of the hollow fiber increased by 4 nm as FS was added. In addition, contact angle measurement was carried out for the hydrophilicity analysis of hollow fiber membranes, and it was confirmed that the hydrophilicity of MMMs were increased by adding of FS. In the case of water permeability, the membrane including FS showed 91~96 LMH and showed 5~11% more increase than PSf membrane. In the antifouling performance test, relative flux reduction ratios of FS mixed hollow fiber membranes were lower than that of PSf membranes, and it was confirmed that increase of hydrophilicity hinders adsorption of hydrophobic BSA on the membrane surface.

  • Hydrophobic porous PVDF hollow fiber membranes for Membrane Distillation (MD) were fabricated by a combination of thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) and stretching. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shape and operating conditions of the module and the effect of piping size on parallel connection. In the optimization experiment of the vacuum membrane distillation module, the flux decreased as the packing density and length of the membrane in the module increased. When the module was connected vertically, it was confirmed that the nearest to the inlet of the vacuum port was the highest flux. In selecting the size of the header pipe of the module, it was confirmed that the maximum flux is shown when the inner diameter area of the hollow fiber membrane and the inner diameter area of the header pipe are the same. Also, it is necessary to find the optimal linear velocity because the higher the linear velocity in the module, the higher the flux, but the pressure acting on the module also increases proportionally.

  • This work deals with the use of High Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy (HRSEM) to verify ultrafiltration membrane selectivity at the end of the production line as well as membrane ageing. The first part of this work is focused on new membranes. It is shown that it is better to use sputtering metallization than vacuum deposition, as this latter technique entails thermal damage to the skin layer. Moreover, the impact of the metallization layer on the determination of the membrane pore size is studied and it is observed that no impact of the metallization step can be clearly defined for a metallization layer ranging from 3 to 12 nm. For example, an average pore size of 16.9 nm and a recovery rate of 6.5 % are observed for a 150 kDa cellulose acetate membrane. These results are in agreement with those given by the manufacturer: pore size ranging from 10 to 15 nm and recovery rate ranging from 5 to 10 %. The second part of this work focuses on the study of membrane ageing. A PVDF hollow fibre membrane is studied. It is shown that a 65 % decrease in the permeate flux can be linked to a decrease in the number of pores at the surface of the membrane and a decrease in the recovery rate. In conclusion, a mapping of the pores is performed for several new hollow fibre membranes used to produce drinking water, made of different materials, with different geometries and molecular weight cut-off. These results provide reference data that will help better understand the phenomena of membrane fouling and membrane ageing.

  • Surface area of the steel member exposed to fire differs according to type and size of the section and the kind of the member, which shows a big difference in the temperature rise of the steel by fire. The section factor ($H_p$/A) is determined by factors such as type, size, and member of the steel and type of the fire protection material, and it is the criteria in determining thickness of the fire protection material. This study showed that the size of the steel increase regardless of the steel type, the section factor decrease. In the results on fire protection thickness of the steel according to the section factor, the efficiency of 1 hour fire protection was lower from 30 to 50% than the criteria. And there is the member, which have the thickness lower the minimum 27% in 2 hour fire protection, but it generally approached in the criteria. In case of H-shape steel, the efficiency of 3 hour fire protection was suitable for the criteria, but rectangular hollow steel section and circular hollow steel section were higher (5.0-17.5%) than the criteria.

  • This paper describes the determination of optimal initial billet size for axisymmetric cold forging products using neural networks. The determination of optimal initial billet size is very important in forging design and forming sequence design, because the result of such designs and forming load can be different by variable initial billet sizes. The forming difficulty has been defined as the degree of difficulty in forming by 3 process ' forward extrusion, backward extrusion and upsetting. By neural networks a forming difficulty can be determined with the ratio of shape and forming process. From the graph of maximum, minimum, and average forming difficulties by variable billet sizes, the optimal billet size can be determined. The initial billets of a solid part and a hollow part whichwas determined by this study are compared with the sequence drawing generated by the one of forming sequence design system.

  • An effect on the enhancing production of hollow 'jumbo' structures and the condition of artificial reefs (dice and hollow jumbo structure) by side scan sonar were described. The experiment of the capture of fish in the jumbo structures and control site (non-artificial site) by trammel net and traps was done twice every year from 1998 to 2000. The relative catches by trammel net between in the jumbo structure and in the control site was significantly different in number and in weight at 5% level and also that by traps significantly different in weight. The t-test of the catch of finespotted flounder showed that the hollow jumbo structure was regarded as a breeding field because the average size of the flounder in the jumbo site was smaller than that in the control site. The search on the condition of the artificial reefs (dice and hollow jumbo structure) was performed by side scanning sonar which showed various phase of it such as accumulated, dispersed, scouring and partly buried. The result implied that in the area of sand bottom with strong tide like the western sea of Korea, the current criterion for constructing artificial reef should be modified because of the sand moving on the bottom.

  • In order to predict the effects of droplets distributions such as number density and droplets size on group combustion characteristics and flame structure for liquid fuel sprays, modifications of group combustions model were made by changing the droplets distributions from uniform to non-uniform. Various droplets distribution models were adopted in this analysis to examine the effect of number density distribution on combustion characteristics and the difference between uniform and non-uniform droplets size distributions for a spherical droplets cloud. As results of present study, hollow droplets could with outer concentrating distribution has shorter total combustion time compare with the case of solid droplets cloud with inner concentrating distribution. Uniform droplets size distribution model predicts the shorter total combustion time compare with non-uniform droplets size distribution model, and the uniform droplets size distribution model may be used to predict the total combustion time for the droplets cloud containing larger initial size of droplets.
