  • A model for predicting the relative density and the compressive strength of open-cell ceramics with three-dimensional network structure was proposed through the interpretation of their macrostructure and fracture mechanics. The equation predicting the relative density was derived under the assumption that the open-cell structure was a periodic array of the tetrakaidecahedron unit cell consisting of cylindrical struts containing the internal hollow with the shape of a triangular prism. The model for compressive strength of open-cell ceramics with the hollow strut was also developed by modifying conventional model which based on fracture behavior of them subjected to the compressive stress. Both the relative density and the compressive strength were expressed in terms of the ratio of the strut diameter to the length together with the ratio of the hollow size to the strut diameter. The proposed model for the relative density and the compressive strength of the alumina-zirconia composite with open-cell structure were accorded well with the experimental values, whereas Gibson-Ashby and Zhang's model did not show such a good agreement.

  • Quasi-ordered arrays of hollow $SnO_2$ hemispheres were prepared by utilizing the colloidal templating route and RF-sputtering methods. Hollow $SnO_2$ hemispheres with shell thickness of 20nm exhibited an uniform continuity and open porosity, resulting in high gas sensitivity due to enhanced surface area as well as reduced interfacial effects. Multilayered hollow $SnO_2$ hemispheres and hollow $SnO_2$ hemispheres with controlled wall thickness were fabricated by controlling processing steps.

  • Hollow flange-shaped parts rue widely used in transportation systems. For good quality products, in general, design of preforms and die shapes for a progressive forging process is an important issue. For the design of die shapes for the forging process of a hollow flange, computer simulations Were earned out using the rigid-plastic finite element method. Forging defects like folding were seen in the vicinity of die corners at the typical shape ratios of upper and lower dies Die shape ratios at which the forging defect could occur during the extrusion-forging process of the hollow flange were investigated. The results might be efficiently used for the proper design of perform shapes, die shapes, and forging processes.

  • Porous alumina ceramics with two different pore sizes were fabricated using hollow microspheres as the pore-forming agent. The relative density, total porosity, and microstructure of the obtained alumina ceramics were studied. It was found that the total porosity of sintered samples with different amounts of hollow microsphere content, from 2.0 to 4.0 wt%, was 69.3-75.6%. The interconnected and spherical cell morphology was obtained with 3.0 wt% hollow microsphere content. The resulting ceramics consist of a hierarchical structure with large-sized cells, and small-sized pores in the cell walls. Moreover, the compressive strength of the sintered samples varied from 8.3-11.5 MPa, corresponding to hollow microsphere contents of 2.0-4.0 wt%.

  • In fracture problems, stress intensity factors obtained theoretically and experimentally have been effectively utilized in the analytical evaluation of the cracks effect. The effect of surface crack of a cylindrical and a hollow cylindrical bar is investigated, as well as the effect of the thickness of a hollow cylindrical bar and inclined crack of a hollow cylinder subjected to torsion moment. In this study, stress intensity factor Km of mode III which expresses the stress state in the neighborhood of a crack tip is used. Stress analysis was conducted of the inside of a hollow cylinder in the axial direction of three dimensional crack tip subjected to torsion moment by combining the caustics method and the stress freezing method.

  • This article presents a semi-analytical solution for an exponentially graded piezoelectric hollow sphere. The sphere interacts with electric displacement, elastic deformations, electric potentials, magneto-thermo-elasticity, and hygrothermal influences. The hollow sphere may be standing under both mechanical and electric potentials. Electro-magneto-elastic behavior of magnetic field vector can be described in the hollow sphere. All material, thermal and magnetic properties of hollow sphere are supposed to be graded in radial direction. A semi-analytical technique is improved to deduce all fields in which different boundary conditions for radial stress and electric potential are presented. Numerical examples for radial displacement, radial and hoop stresses, and electric potential are investigated. The influence of many parameters is studied. It is seen that the gradation of all material, thermal and magnetic properties has particular effectiveness in many applications of modern technology.

  • The effect of high-temperature spinning and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) additive on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction measurement, and scanning electron microscopy, together with the corresponding microfiltration performances such as water flux, rejection rate, and elongational strength. Using high-temperature spinning, porous hollow fiber membranes with particulate morphology were prepared through PVDF crystallization. The particulate structure of the membranes was further modified by the addition of miscible PVP with PVDF. Due to these effects, the rejection rate and strength of the fibers were increased at the expense of reduced water flux and mean pore size, which indicates that high-temperature spinning and PVP addition are vary effective to control the morphology of PVDF hollow fiber membranes for microfiltration.

  • The hollow $SiO_2$ spheres with uniform size were synthesized by a modified Stober method under the control of polyelectrolytes (PSS and PAA) as templates. This synthetic route includes the formation of spherical colloid micelle in ethanol solution, hydrolysis of TEOS under control of ammonia, and the removal of polyelectrolyte by washing or calcination. Hollow silica spheres with controllable core diameters between 100 and 270 nm and wall thickness between 15 and 50 nm have been synthesized. The influence of template solution concentration and solvent and dispersant on the formation of silica hollow spheres is studied and reported in detail.

  • Arbitrary graded-index HOF(Hollow Optical Fibers) are analyzed using the modified Airy function, and the corresponding eigenvalue equation that renders precise results is derived. For graded index HOF, the gradient of an evanescent field in hollow region could be adjusted more sharply than the conventional step-index HOF and the feasibility of more effective atom-guiding is confirmed.
