  • A Metropolis genetic algorithm(MGA) is developed and applied for the structural design optimization. In MGA favorable features of Metropolis algorithm in simulated annealing(SA) are incorporated in simple genetic algorithm(SGA), so that the MGA alleviates the disadvantage of finding imprecise solution in SGA and time-consuming computation in SA. Performances of MGA are compared with those of conventional algorithms such as Holland's SGA, Krishnakumar's micro genetic algorithm(μGA), and Kirkpatrick's SA. Typical numerical examples are used to evaluate the favorable features and applicability of MGA From the theoretical evaluation and numerical experience, it is concluded that the proposed MGA is a reliable and efficient tool for structural design optimization.

  • Simple Genetic Algorithm(SGA) proposed by J. H. Holland is a population-based optimization method based on the principle of the Darwinian natural selection. The theoretical foundations of GA are the Schema Theorem and the Building Block Hypothesis. Although GA goes well in many applications as an optimization method, still it does not guarantee the convergence to a global optimum in some problems. In designing intelligent systems, specially, since there is no deterministic solution, a heuristic trial-and error procedure is usually used to determine the systems' parameters. As an alternative scheme, therefore, there is a growing interest in a co-evolutionary system, where two populations constantly interact and co-evolve. In this paper we review the existing co-evolutionary algorithms and propose co-evolutionary schemes designing intelligent systems according to the relation between the system's components.

  • Posner [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 8 (1957), 1093-1100] defined a derivation on prime rings and Herstein [Canad, Math. Bull. 21 (1978), 369-370] derived commutative property of prime ring with derivations. Recently, Bergen [Canad. Math. Bull. 26 (1983), 267-227], Bell and Daif [Acta. Math. Hunger. 66 (1995), 337-343] studied derivations in primes and semiprime rings. Also, in near-ring theory, Bell and Mason [Near-Rungs and Near-Fields (pp. 31-35), Proceedings of the conference held at the University of Tubingen, 1985. Noth-Holland, Amsterdam, 1987; Math. J. • The extracted field emission current can be used to controllably heat microfabricated cold field emission cathode tips. The heating can be sufficient to smooth and recrystallize the tip surface by surface self-diffusion, and at least partially clean the surface of contaminants by thermal desorption. Self-heating not only allows for the achievement and maintenance of stable emission characteristics, but can be used to make the current-voltage characteristics of microfabricated field emitter tips nearly identical to one another. The resulting improvement in emission uniformity will allow for more reliable array operation at increased electron emission current densities.

  • The purpose of this study was a comparative of the differences, relationships and impacts between the self-concept and career development for elementary schoolers by gender. The subjects of this study were 259(133 boys and 126 girls) elementary schoolers. The instrument used in this study was Jung Jong Jin's(1996) self-concept Inventory and Ahn Chang gyu & Ahn Hyeon eui's(2006) Holland career development Inventory. The collected data were analyzed with a SPSS 12.0 program. The major findings of the study were as follows: (1) the mean score of boy(M=54.857, SD=7.593) was higher than girl(M=52.302, SD=8.908) in 'emotional-self'. (2) (1) the mean score of girl(M=42.200, SD=5.918) was higher than boy(M=37.372, SD=7.600) in 'gender-related prejudice about occupation'. (2) the mean score of boy(M=36.544, SD=5.544) was higher than girl(M=35.008, SD=5.118) in 'autonomy' (3) the revealed that self-concept was highly correlated with boy's(r=.175~.761) and girl's(r=.199~.667) career development. (4) (1) the 'academic-self' had an impact of the boy's(5.6%~56.3%) and girl's(8.4%~48.7%) career development. (2) the 'social-self' had an impact of the boy's(2.6%~5.9%) and girl's(2.7%~4.3%) career development. (3) the 'emotional-self' had an impact of the boy's(1.9%~37.0%) and girl's(11.2%) career development. (4) the 'physical-self' no had an impact of the boy's and girl's career development. The findings of the study illustrated that the self-concept for elementary schoolers had an impact career development.
