FPGA based System for Pinhole Detection in Cold Rolled Steel (FPGA 기반의 냉연강판 핀홀 검출 시스템)

  • The quality of steel plate products is determined by the number of defects and the process problems are estimated by shapes of defects. Therefore pinholes defects of cold rolled steel have to be controlled. In order to improve productivity and quality of products, within each production process, the product is inspected by an adequate inspection system individually in the lines of steelworks. Among a number of inspection systems, we focus on the pinholes detection system. In this paper, we propose an embedded system using FPGA which can detect pinholes defects. The proposed system is smaller and more flexible than a traditional system based on expensive frame grabbers and PC. In order to detect consecutive defects, FPGAs acquire two dimensional image and process the image in real time by using correlation of lines. The proposed pinholes detection algorithm decreases arithmetic operations of image processing and also we designed the hardware to shorten the data path between logics due to decreasing propagation delay. The experimental results show that the proposed embedded system detects the reliable number of pinholes in real time.

Adaptive mesh generation for plane stress problems using error based on element′s representative strain value (요소의 대표 변형률 값에 근거한 에러평가를 이용한 평면응력문제의 적응적 요소망 형성)

  • The finite element method is one of the most widely used method of structural analysis that has wide applications in diverse fields of engineering and science. The method has been proven effective and reliable in many practical problems. One of the reasons for the methods' popularity is its ease of use, but still the user has to input the finite element mesh which affects the accuracy of the results. The knowledge required to form an effective mesh for a given problem is somewhat complex and for sometime there has been research effort to automate the generation of the mesh and this is called the adaptive mesh generation scheme. A good adaptive mesh scheme seemed to require an accurate assessment of error and generally this requires some additional computation. This paper looks into the possibility of generating adaptive meshes based on representative strain values in each finite element method. The proposed adaptive scheme does not require additional computations other that looking up the data values already computed as finite element analysis results and simple manipulations of these data. Two plane stress problems, a plate with a hole and a deep beam with a concentrated load at the end are considered to show the progress of the improved generation of adaptive meshes using the scheme.

Effect of Inlet Geometries on the Two-Phase Flow Distribution at Header-Channel Junction (헤더-채널 분기관에서의 헤더 입구 형상이 2상 유동 분배에 미치는 영향에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • The main objective of this work is to experimentally investigate the effect of inlet geometries on the distribution of two-phase annular flow at header-channel junctions simulating the corresponding parts of compact heat exchangers. The cross-section of the header and the channels were fixed to $16mm{\times}16mm$ and $12mm{\times}1.8mm$, respectively. Experiments were performed for the mass flux and the mass quality ranges of $30{\sim}140kg/m^2s$ and 0.3~0.7, respectively. Air and water were used as the test fluids. Three different inlet geometries of the header were tested:no restriction (case A), a single 8 mm hole at the center (case B), and nine 2 mm holes around the center (case C) at the inlet, respectively. The tendencies of the two-phase flow distribution were different, in each case. For cases B and C (flow resistance exists), more uniform flow distribution results were seen, compared with case A(no flow resistance), due to the flow pattern change to mist flow from annular flow at the inlet, and the flow recirculation near the end plate of the header.

  • We successively fabricated the Ni metal mask by additive method and evaluated the effects of wetting agents addition on the microstructure, hardness, and friction coefficient. In the process, the additive patterns with fine hole and pitch were made by photolithography technique and subsequently Ni plate was electroformed on the patterns. We found that the microstructure and mechanical properties were significantly varied when the different combinations of the wetting agents were used. When the wetting agents of both SF-1 and SF-2 were added, the microstructure consisted of crystal and amorphous phases, the grain size reduced to 5-40 nm, the RMS value decreased to 11.4 nm and the wear resistance improved. In addition, the hardness was as high as 638 Hv which is higher than that of commercial stainless steel mask and this improvement is probably due to the presence of amorphous Phase and fine grain size. The improvement of the wear resistance can provide a higher reliability and a longer service life.

Development of Algorithm for 2-D Automatic Mesh Generation and Remeshing Technique Using Bubble Packing Method (I) -Linear Analysis- (버블패킹방법을 이용한 2차원 자동격자 생성 및 재구성 알고리듬 개발(I) -선형 해석-)

  • The fully automatic algorithm from initial finite element mesh generation to remeshing in two dimensional geometry is introduced using bubble packing method (BPM) for finite element analysis. BPM determines the node placement by force-balancing configuration of bubbles and the triangular meshes are made by Delaunay triangulation with advancing front concept. In BPM, we suggest two node-search algorithms and the adaptive/recursive bubble controls to search the optimal nodal position. To use the automatically generated mesh information in FEA, the new enhanced bandwidth minimization scheme with high efficiency in CPU time is developed. In the remeshing stage, the mesh refinement is incorporated by the control of bubble size using two parameters. And Superconvergent Patch Recovery (SPR) technique is used for error estimation. To verify the capability of this algorithm, we consider two elasticity problems, one is the bending problem of short cantilever beam and the tension problem of infinite plate with hole. The numerical results indicate that the algorithm by BPM is able to refine the mesh based on a posteriori error and control the mesh size easily by two parameters.

Computer Aided Teaching of Structural Engineering Using Adaptive Schemes in the Finite Element Method

  • A simple outline for teaching adaptive scheme based finite element method for planar problems as a part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering curriculum is presented. Displacement based finite element formulation for planar problems and representative strain value based adaptive scheme for mesh generation are considered. As examples, a cantilever beam with a concentrated load treated as a planar problem and stretching of a plate with a circular hole are analyzed with displacement based finite element method with adaptive meshes. The examples and outlines show how adaptive based finite element method may become an essential part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering.

A study on the measurement of two-dimensional in-plane displacements of the plate with a circular hole by ESPI method (ESPI에 의한 원공판의 2차원 면내변위 측정에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the performance and problems in analysis method and testing system of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interfermetry(ESPI) method, in measuring two-dimensional in- plane displacement. The analysis result of measurement by ESPI is quite comparable to that of measurement by strain gauge method. This implieds that the method of ESPI is a very effective tool in non-contact two-dimensional in-plane strain analysis. But there is a controversial point, measurement error. This error is discussed to be affected not by ESPI method itself, but by its analysis scheme of the interference fringe, where the first-order interpolation has been applied to the points of strain measured. Further development of advanced first-order interpolation method is being undertaken for the more precise in-plane strain measurement.

Management of Intraoperative Acetabular Fractures in Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Current Concept Review

  • Intraoperative acetabular fractures (IAFs), a complication seldomly encountered in total hip arthroplasty, are typically a result of the impact of insertion of a cementless press-fit cup. Factors that contribute to the risk of these types of fractures include poor bone quality, highly sclerotic bone, and the use of a press-fit cup that is excessively large. The approach to management of these fractures is dependent on when they are identified. Immediate stabilization measures should be implemented for management of fractures detected during surgery. When fractures are detected postoperatively, the decision regarding conservative treatment is dependent on the stability of the implant and the specific fracture pattern. In the majority of cases, effective treatment of an acetabular fracture detected intraoperatively can be administered using a multi-hole revision cup along with anchoring screws in the various regions of the acetabulum. Selection of plate osteosynthesis of the posterior column is recommended when there is a large posterior wall fragment or pelvic discontinuity. In cases where anatomical dimensions allow, cup-cage reconstruction may offer a promising alternative to a combined hip procedure. The number of reports addressing the management of IAFs is limited. This review focuses on outlining the strategies that are currently available for management of this seldomly encountered complication.

Treatment of Traumatic DislocationofMetacarpophalangeal Joint of the Thumb (무지 중수지 관절의 외상성 탈구 치료)

  • Purpose: We examined patients to evaluate the clinical results of traumatic metacarpophalangeal(M-P) dislocations of the thumb, uncommon and irreducible. Materials and Methods: In 11 traumatic M-P dislocations of the thumb, the types of dislocations were 10 dorsal and 1 volar dislocations resulted from the impacted and hyperextended forces on thumb. Authors evaluated the possibility of closed reduction, the anatomical structures interfering with closed reduction, and the surgical approaches. Results: Eight cases were treated with open reduction through volar approach and two cases were treated with closed reduction. Joint fusion was done with a plate in a chronic case. Initial closed reduction was attempted in all cases, but succeeded in only 2 cases because the interposed ruptured volar plate, the flexor pollicis brevis tendon and ulnar sesamoid bone at the volar side of the M-Pjoint were the obstacles to reduce. The metacarpal head was caught in button-hole slit between theflexor pollicis brevis and the ruptured volar joint capsule in all cases. Conclusion: Similar with the M-P joint dislocations of other fingers, the dorsal complex M-P dislocations of the thumb due to hyper extension are unusual and can't easily be reduced by closed manipulation. It is necessary to pay attention to the ruptured volar plate, capsule, the subluxated portion ofthe sesamoid and flexor pollicis brevis as interfering structures.

A Study on the Uniform Mixing of Ammonia-Air with the Change of Ammonia Supply Device Shape in a De-NOx System (탈질설비에서 암모니아 혼합기의 형상에 따른 암모니아-공기 균일 혼합에 관한 연구)

  • Selective catalytic reduction(SCR) method is widely used among various methods for reducing nitrogen oxides in combustion devices of coal power plant. In the present study, the computational fluid dynamic analysis was accomplished to derive the optimal shape of ammonia-dilution air mixing device in a ammonia injection grid. The distribution characteristics of flow and $NH_3$ concentration had been elucidated for the reference shape of ammonia mixing device(Case 1). In the mixing device of Case 1, it could be seen that $NH_3$ distribution was shifted to the wall opposite to the inlet of the ammonia injection pipe. For the improvement of $NH_3$ distribution, the case(Case 2) with closing one upper injection hole and 4 side injection holes, the case(Case 3) with installing horizontal plate at the upper of ammonia injection pipe, the case(Case 4) with installing horizontal plate and horizontal arc plate at he upper of ammonia injection pipe were investigated by analyzing flow and $NH_3$ concentration distributions. From the present study, it was found that the % RMS of $NH_3$ for Case 4 was 4.92%, which was the smallest value among four cases, and the range of $R_{NH3}$ also has the optimally uniform distribution, -10.82~8.34%.
