Seasonal Variation of the Soya Warm Current Observed by HF Ocean Radars

  • Three HF ocean radar stations were installed at the Soya Strait in the Sea of Okhotsk in order to monitor the Soya Warm Current. Frequency of the HF radar is 13.9 MHz, and range and azimuth resolutions are 3 km and 5 deg., respectively. Surface current velocity observed by the radars shows good agreement with drifting buoy and shipboard ADCP observations. The velocity of Soya Warm Current reaches its maximum, which is about 1 m/s, in summer, and becomes weak in winter. The surface transport across the strait shows a significant correlation with the sea level difference along the strait.

  • Spatial and time distributions of x-rays and neutrons from Hokkaido University 45 MeV electron linac facility were measured and compared with the calculation. In the calculation, x-rays in a Pb-target were evaluated using the EGS-code. The x-rays and the neutrons from the target to the facility building boundary and skyshine process outside the facility building were simulated with the EGS and the MCNP respectively.

Ellipso-Microscopic Observation of Titanium Surface under UV-Light Irradiation

  • The ellipso-microscopic observation of a titanium surface undergoing anodization in $0.05mol\;dm^{-3}$ of $H_2SO_4$ was conducted. During irradiation by ultra-violet (UV) light with a wavelength of 325 nm, the titanium surface allowed for the flow of a photo-induced current and showed up as a bright, patch-like image on an ellipso-microscopic view. The brightness and patch-pattern in the image changed with flowing photo-induced current. The changes in the brightness and the image corresponded to the formation and/or degradation of titanium oxide due to the photo-electrochemical reaction of the oxide. An in situ monitoring using the ellipso-microscope revealed that the film change was dependent on the irradiation light power, by UV-light increases the anodic current and results in the initiation of pitting at lower potentials as compared with the non-irradiated condition.

  • Irreducible dislocation of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint is a rare traumatic condition commonly seen in sports injuries. Herein, we present a case with chronic dislocation of the DIP joint caused by high energy trauma accompanied by a fracture of the ipsilateral clavicle. The local deformity resulting from the dislocation can be trivial. Therefore, obtaining radiographs of all the interphalangeal joint injuries, regardless of the findings on inspection, is crucial for accurate diagnosis in the case of high energy trauma. The good functional improvement was obtained by open reduction and temporary wire fixation for 4 weeks.

  • A TACUB jig was applied to separate waste plastics [polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)] used in copy machine. The effect of water pulsation including amplitude and frequency on the separation performance was investigated for the feeds containing two or three plastics. Good results are obtained under suitable conditions. Grades of 99.8% PS,99.3% ABS, and 98.6% PET are recovered as the products in the upper, middle and bottom layers respectively. Based on these results, a processing plant fer recycling of plastics from scrapped copy machines is now under construction.
