  • The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the role and importance of National Research & Education Network (NREN) in the national research and education field and to establish the future strategy of KREONET in Korea. To this end, we first carefully analyze the footsteps of NREN in major overseas countries, KREONET achievements, and future demand for KREONET. The history of NREN's development is divided into the 2000s, 2010s, and present by era, and classified into network infrastructure, network service, and next-generation network technology by subject. KREONET achievements are divided into advanced research support, network backbone and operation, and network service. Future demand analysis of users who use KREONET was conducted through Korea Research International Incorporation, a survey company. This paper presents the future development strategy of KREONET by analyzing KREONET achievements and future demand.

  • The goal of this study is to improve the competitiveness of professional librarians in society. To this end, we analyzed domestic and international LIS curriculum, determined demand from field librarians through a survey, carried out job analysis by library types, and developed an operating model for LIS curriculum by synthesizing all of these results. Finally, we suggested a course of study for civil service librarians based on this model. As a result, the six required courses for civil service librarians are: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Organization, Information Services (Reference and Information Services), Library Management, Information Retrieval, and Field Work. The four core courses for the civil service concentration are: Collection Development, Information Sources by Subjects, Public Library Management, and Digital Libraries. Suggested electives best suited to this career path include Using Web Resources, Information Literacy, Information Services in Culturally Diverse Communities, Library Marketing, Libraries and Cultural Programs, Reading Guidance, Library History, Small Library Management, Studies in Library Buildings, Library Cooperation, Managing Digital Collections, and Information and Communication in a Digital Age.

  • As large-scale computational applications in various scientific domains have been utilized over many integrated sets of grid computing resources, the difficulty of their execution management and control has been increased. It is beneficial to refer job history generated from many application executions, in order to identify application‘s characteristics and to decide selection policies of grid resource meaningfully. In this paper, we apply a statistical technique, Plackett-Burman design with fold-over (PBDF), for analyzing grid environments and execution history of applications. PBDF design identifies main factors in grid environments and applications, ranks based on how much they affect to their execution time. The effective factors are used for selecting reference job profiles and then preferable resource based on the reference profiles is chosen. An application is performed on the selected resource and its execution result is added to job history. Factor's credit is adjusted according to the actual execution time. For a proof-of-concept, we analyzed job history from an aerospace research grid system to get characteristics of grid resource and applications. We built JARS algorithm and simulated the algorithm with the analyzed job history. The simulation result shows good reliability and considerable performance in grid environment with frequently crashed resources.

  • In this paper, we propose an intelligent research fund management system that applies artificial intelligence technology to an integrated research fund management system. By defining research fund management rules as work rules, a detection model learned using deep learning is designed, through which the disapproval status is presented for each research fund usage history. The disapproval detection system of the RCMS implemented in this study predicts whether the newly registered usage details are recognized or disapproved using an artificial intelligence model designed based on the use of an 8.87 million research fund registered in the RCMS. In addition, the item-detail recommendation system described herein presents the usage details according to the usage history item newly registered by the artificial intelligence model through a correlation between the research cost usage details and the item itself. The accuracy of the recommendation was shown to be 97.21%.

  • The world health organization classified the emerging coronavirus (known as Covid-19) as a pandemic after confirming the extent of spread and scale. As a matter of fact, outbreaks of similar scale or even worse have been witnessed throughout history. Thus, the development of prevention strategies exists to protect against such calamaties. One of the widely proven measures that controls the spread of any contagious diseases is social distancing. As a result, this paper will demonstrate the concept of an application "Be Aware" on enabling the implementation of this preventive measure. In particular "Be aware" evaluates the extent of congestion in public places using current time data. The proposed project will use Global Positioning System (GPS), and Application Programming Interface (API), to ensure information accuracy, and the API use Crowdsourcing to collect Real-Time Data (RTD) from the selected places. • In this paper, a method is proposed to recognize human actions as nonverbal expression; the proposed method is composed of two steps which are action representation and action recognition. First, MHI(Motion History Image) is used in the action representation step. This method includes segmentation based on depth information and generates spatio-temporal templates to describe actions. Second, CNN(Convolution Neural Network) which includes feature extraction and classification is employed in the action recognition step. It extracts convolution feature vectors and then uses a classifier to recognize actions. The recognition performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing other action recognition methods in experimental results.

  • Objective: To understand the domestication and spread of horses in history, genetic information is essential. However, mitogenetic traits of ancient or medieval horses have yet to be comprehensively revealed, especially for East Asia. This study thus set out to reveal the maternal lineage of skeletal horse remains retrieved from a 15th century archaeological site (Gongpyeongdong) at Old Seoul City in South Korea. Methods: We extracted DNA from the femur of Equus caballus (SNU-A001) from Joseon period Gongpyeongdong site. Mitochondrial (mt) DNA (HRS 15128-16116) of E. caballus was amplified by polymerase chain reaction. Cloning and sequencing were conducted for the mtDNA amplicons. The sequencing results were analyzed by NCBI/BLAST and phylogenetic tool of MEGA7 software. Results: By means of mtDNA cytochrome b and D-loop analysis, we found that the 15th century Korean horse belonged to haplogroup Q representing those horses that have historically been raised widely in East Asia. Conclusion: The horse is unique among domesticated animals for the remarkable impact it has on human civilization in terms of transportation and trade. Utilizing the Joseon-period horse remains, we can obtain clues to reveal the genetic traits of Korean horse that existed before the introduction of Western horses.
