  • Recent studies of science and technology "in-the-making" revealed that the process of designing material artifacts is not a straightforward application of prior images or theories by one (or more) person(s) isolated from his or her (their) environment. Rather, designing is a process contingent on the social and material setting for both engineering designers and students. Over the past decade, designing technological artifacts has emerged as an important learning environment in science classrooms. Through the analyses of a large database concerning an innovative simple machines curriculum for sixth-and seventh-grade students, we accumulated valid evidence for the nature of the designing process and science learning through it. In this paper, we show that design actions intertwine with the transformation of the objectified raw materials and artifact, the designer collective, and the mediating tools enabling that transformation, which constitute the elements of an activity from the perspective of cultural-historical activity theory. We conceptualize the continuous change of relation between material artifacts, designers, and tools throughout the design activity as co-evolution. Two episodes were selected to exemplify synchronic and diachronic change of relations inherent in co-evolving activity system. Finally, we discuss the implications of co-evolution during design activity for science learning.

  • This study examined the confronting problems in home economics and its historical and philosophical causing background, and suggested the future direction for home economics and home economics education. This study, hoped to help home economics overcoming its chaotic situation, and to establish academic characteristics through a philosophical consistency: 1. What are the significant problems which home economics has confronted, and the consequences of those problems\ulcorner 2. What are the fundamental caues of the problem\ulcorner 3.What should be the nature of home econimics to be able to overcome the confronting problems and what can be proposed for the future of home economic\ulcorner Each research question was addressed by analyzing Journal articles, theses, philosophical studies in the field. The results were as follows; 1. such problems as the ambiguity in research focus and the nature of academic charateristcs, and the limitation of research method have resulted fragmentation and specialization in the field, and the lack of philosophical research. Also they led home and family. Moreover each problem brought chaos into curriculum of home economics and that of home economics deucation. 2. The philosophical causing backgrounds of present problems are western ideas such as pragmatism, positivism, Social Darwnism and Korean ideas such as Confucian tradition, Practical Science movement in the 19th century, and modernization and industrialization from the middle of 20th century. Along with influencing historical situation these backgrounds have distorted home economics to be technical science oriented. 3. To solve these problems academic characteristics of home economics must be reestablished as practical science and as profession. This study proposed following for the future of home economics and home economics education: (1) For the future of home economics, first, it needs to recover the unity as one academic field with its focus on family by overcoming fragmentation and specialization trend in the field. Secondly, philosophical and historical studies must be carried o for the unity of all specialized field in home economics. Thirdly, home economics must try to reestablish and reflect in pratice its acadimic characteristics as practical science and as profession. (2) For home economic eduation, first, it should not be the instrument for idelogies of powerful social systems. And teacher education for home economics teachers must inclued principles of home economics and philosophy and history of home economics enabling teachers to achieve purposes of home economics. Secondly, its curriculum contents should be composed of practical ones beyond technical ones.

  • Korean scientific community has recently argued that, in order to attract talented young people to the science and engineering fields, more ranking positions in the governmental office should be filled in by science and engineering majors. In this context, a special attention has been paid to the Chinese case where science and engineering majors have taken the highest places in Chinese political hierarchy. This paper examines historical and social background of the salience of science and engineering fields in modem China. A closer examination shows that the salience of science and engineering fields was resulted by the distinct historical experiences of China-the socialist reform of higher education system and Cultural Revolution. The former shaped the social conviction that humanities and social sciences are less useful than science and engineering fields. The latter even spread the idea that majoring in humanities or social sciences run the risk of political oppressions. Thus, the salience of science and engineering in China is a social phenomenon reflecting an academic hierarchy forced by the radical politics of modem China. Also, the higher proportion of science and engineering majors in the raking governmental officers has been resulted by a unique Chinese political system, in particular the personnel management system of the Chinese Communist Party that emphasizes practical experiences after college graduation. The comparison of the social position of science and engineering majors in China and Korea without taking account of such historical and social background may therefore mislead our understanding of the cause of and counterplan to the decreasing popularity of science and engineering fields in Korean universities.

  • Canola meal is derived from the crushing of canola seed for oil extraction. Although it has been used in swine diets for a long time, its inclusion levels have been limited due to concerns regarding its nutritive value primarily arising from results of early studies showing negative effects of dietary canola meal inclusion in swine diets. Such effects were attributable to the presence of anti-nutritional factors (ANF; notably glucosinolates) in canola meal. However, due to advances in genetic improvements of canola that have led to production of cultivars with significantly lower ANF content and improved processing procedures, canola meal with a superior nutritive value for non-ruminant animals is now available. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to review the recent studies in the use of canola meal as feedstuff for swine, the factors influencing its use and the strategies to overcome them. First a historical overview of the development of canola is provided.

  • Samguk Yusa is a important historic record about the dynasties of ancient Korea. It consists of information about the hidden, mythical history, old languages and poems. This historical book has been translated many times since the Liberation of Korea in 1945. However, these books are the result of academic research so we are restricted in our usage of them to understand Korean history. There are many historical documentaries and TV series on Samguk Yusa. However, these programs can be viewed only and not be utilized in any way by the audience. Since the computer was introduced to the public, multimedia technology has been a good source to combine text, image, moving picture, sound, animation and graphic. Producing the CD-ROM about historical books not only produce digital images but also a valuable high quality digital information. Digitalization process also keeps the original content of the historical books as well as provide value as a research material as historical, artistic and archaeological item. Furthermore, its information would be provided through a network, like internet, to share and to promote more advanced studies. The purpose of this study is to produce the basic method of multimedia design of Samguk Yusa. This study also researches the problems of multimedia process for more effective usage.

  • This study aims to develop the education for college students who should perform the social role of the fut ure by conducting trekking activities including the characteristics, history, and culture of Cheonan area and then investigating the sociality and history of 36 college students. Taejosan, Seonggeosan, and Heukseongsan, which are part of the independent ring of Cheonan city, were selected as courses. The training was conducted by six instructors majoring in humanities, history, physical education and medicine. Teachers of humanities and history majors conducted theoretical lectures to raise the historical awareness of Cheonan area related to trekking course. In trekking practice, instructors of physical education and medicine majored in trekking safety education and course progress. Among the social development factors, responsibility, autonomy, and sociality were high. After the education, students recognized that the interest and necessity of history were high in order to understand the present society, thought that they made a lot of development compared to the previous one, and answered that the main development factors of history were the people and that there was a change in perception through this education. This study was composed of the survey after the education, so the psychological characteristics of the individual were not reflected, and it is difficult to generalize it because the number of subjects is small. In the future, more subjects need to be investigated and local residents need to investigate changes in local awareness.

  • Several models predict large and potentially abrupt ocean circulation changes due to anthropogenic greenhouse-gas emissions. These circulation changes drive-in the models-considerable oceanic oxygen trend. A sound estimate of the observed oxygen trends can hence be a powerful tool to constrain predictions of future changes in oceanic deepwater formation, heat and carbon dioxide uptake. Estimating decadal scale oxygen trends is, however, a nontrivial task and previous studies have come to contradicting conclusions. One key potential problem is that changes in the historical observation network might introduce considerable errors. Here we estimate the likely magnitude of these errors for a subset of the available observations in the Southern Ocean. We test three common data analysis methods south of Australia and focus on the decadal-scale trends between the 1970's and the 1990's. Specifically, we estimate errors due to sparsely sampled observations using a known signal (the time invariant, temporally averaged, World Ocean Atlas 2001) as a negative control. The crossover analysis and the objective analysis methods are for less prone to spatial sampling location biases than the area averaging method. Subject to numerous caveats, we find that errors due to sparse sampling for the area averaging method are on the order of several micro-moles $kg^{-1}$. for the crossover and the objective analysis method, these errors are much smaller. For the analyzed example, the biases due to changes in the spatial design of the historical observation network are relatively small compared to the tends predicted by many model simulations. This raises the possibility to use historic oxygen trends to constrain model simulations, even in sparsely sampled ocean basins.
