  • To know the role of 'the solid compressive pressure to the first solid layer of a cake, $p_d$' in the 'unified theory on solid-liquid separation', we analyzed extremely compressible cake formed with floc for the following three operations with our new concepts. First, the role of $p_d$ was studied in calculating the sediment thickness of floc, and in calculating the cake thickness in cake filtration performed with floc sediment. Second, we calculated the expression procedure using $p_d$. Finally, the influence of $p_d$ on cake thickness in hindered sedimentation, and on the calculation of the procedure of hindered sedimentation $p_d$ was verified. Thus the possibility of application of 'unified theory on solid-liquid separation' and the importance of $p_d$ was verified. Through these processes, new theoretical definitions of the cake filtration, expression and hindered sedimentation was established.

  • Column tests in the laboratory were preformed to investigate characteristics of settling process of dredged soil sampled from in-situ. Test results were analyzed by using the existing theories on discrete settling and hindered settling. From column tests of monitoring the interface with time, settling was found to be a linear process with time and the settling rate was increased with initial water content of slurry. The settling rate was also observed to decrease with increasing initial height of slurry. Most of settling process were composed of flocculation, hindered settling and self-weight consolidation. On the other hands, flocculation of soil during settling was observed and it was found that the size and density of flocculated particles could be analyzed by using the method proposed by Richardson and Zaki.

  • The settling behavior of marine fluid mud in the west seaside of Korea has been studied with theoretical analysis and experimental technique. This paper describes laboratorial experiments on the sedimentation and the deposition of soil particles in seawater, with measurement of velocity of interface, the water contents, the settlement. And the reseults are compared with an earlier theoretical research, the hindered settling theory of Kynch, McRoberts and Nixon. According to the results the process of Banweol mud sedimentation showed the typical mode of the hindered settling under the condition of initial water content, wo=1000%. Also, the falling rates of fluid mud interface from initial settling height vs. the rising rates of soil deposit from the bottom of the test tub were measured by the function of time, the correlati tranship of them demonstrated as a straight line and obtained an experimental formula.

  • A Study on the precipitation characteristics of nickel hydroxide as well as carbonate and sulfide is carried out to determine the proper treatment condition of the wastewater induced from nickel-plating industry. The nickel concentrations in the effluent could be kept lower than 5ppm when the value of pH was maintained higher than 10. The precipitation of nickel salts by alkaline addition to the nickel containing model wastewater was conducted by using proper amount of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulfide. In case of the sulfide treatment, the residual nickel concentration in the clear water after precipitates removed showed the lowest value. The influences of the precipitation condition upon the particle size of the crystals precipitated were also investigated. In spite of the various precipitation conditions were adopted, the particle size of the precipitated crystals showed no great differences. The sedimentation rates of the precipitated particle bed were observed and the free sedimentation period was terminated within 20 minutes. Although the hindered sedimentation as well as bed compaction progressed subsequently, the bed heights were maintained almost the same level after two hours of sedimentation.

  • Transducin (T), the heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide binding protein in rod outer segments, serves as an intermediary between the receptor protein, rhodopsin, and the effector protein, cGMP phosphodiesterase. Labeling of T with dansyl chloride (DnsCl) inhibited its light-dependent guanine nucleotide binding activity. Conversely, DnsCl had no effect on the functionality of rhodopsin. Approximately 2-3 mol of DnsCl were incorporated per mole of T. Since fluoroaluminate was capable of activating DnsCl-modified T, this lysine-specific labeling compound did not affect the guanine nucleotide-binding pocket of T. However, the labeling of T with DnsCl hindered its binding to photoexcited rhodopsin, as shown by sedimentation experiments. Additionally, rhodopsin completely protected against the DnsCl inactivation of T. These results demonstrated the existence of functional lysines on T that are located in the proximity of the interaction site with the photoreceptor protein.

  • Contaminated sediments more than 30 million/$m^3$ is generated from dredging work for harbours and coastal maintenance in Korea. Approximately 300 million/$m^3$ of sediments is dredged to deepen harbours and shipping lanes in US and of which $3{\sim}12million/m^3$ is highly contaminated. Although much is known about technologies for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil, much less is known about the treatment of contaminated sediment. In general, negatively charged fine particles will migrate towards positively charged system of electrodes under the influence of electrophoresis. However, the electrically induced migration of colloidal particles contaminated with heavy metals may be hindered by the positively charged heavy metal contaminants adsorbed onto the soil surfaces depending on the contamination level. This paper demonstrates settling behaviour of clayey soil by comparison with electrophoretic particle movement under the effects of heavy metal contamination, applied electric field strength, and its polarity changed by the electrode configuration.

  • This study is an experimental attempt to confirm the binder effect of zeolite coating on glass plate by heat treatment. As a result, zeolite was successfully formed with low concentratios of pressure, whose concentration was effective in 10% or more for thin film zeolite coating. And as the content of the binder (TEOS) in mixed coating solution was higher, the zeolite was fastened better on the surface. Above 5% content of the binder in the coating solution, TEOS hindered zeolite synthesis of the precursor and brought to zeolite capacity decrease. Furthermore, when the concentration of the precursor, sedimentation rate of the precursor was higher and the coating efficiency is reduced thereby. Therefore, the most effective concentrations of the precursor and TEOS in the coating solution was 10% and 5%, respectively. It was concluded that zeolite coating is produced by heat treatment method after dipping without hydrothermal synthesis.

  • Measurements of sedimentation, solid loading, zeta potential, and viscosity were employed to determine a proper dispersant and its amount for a well dispersed alumina powders in aqueous alumina tape casting using acrylate as a binder. Polycarboxylic acid was the most effective one among various dispersants considered in the present study and its amount was 0.23∼0.24 g per 100 g alumina for a dispersion. Better dispersion was obtained as an increase of dispersant addition. However, the dispersion was hindered as the amount of dispersant was higher than the optimum amount because of bridging or tangling of polymer chains. Excellent aqueous alumina tapes were prepared from the slurry containing the optimum amount of the polycarboxylic acid (0.2g), alumina powders(100 g), acrylate and Benzoflex as binder and plasticizer, respectively. The viscosity of the slurry was 570 cps and the alumina loading in the tape was 57 vol%.
