Travelling vehicles on roads may slip or overturn due to strong cross wind. This paper presents the path deviation equation and the overturning equation of vehicle, and the process of evaluating the cross wind risk. Case studies for cars and trucks are carried out. It explains the mechanism why the deviation occurs according to the types of vehicles. It shall help to prepare the measures for reducing the risk of travelling vehicles in high wind speeds.

The effects of vehicles and pavement surface types on noise have been investigated at the Korea Expressway Corporation's Test Road along the southbound side of the Jungbu Inland Expressway, South Korea. The study was conducted in 2005 and 2006 through field measurements at nine surface sections of asphalt concrete and Portland cement concrete pavements using eleven vehicles. For the road noise analysis, the sound power levels (PWLs) of combined noise (e.g., tire/pavement interaction noise and power-train noise together) and tire/pavement interaction noise using various vehicles were calculated based on the novel close proximity (NCPX) and pass-by methods. Then, the characteristics of the PWLs were evaluated according to surface type, vehicle type, and vehicle speed. The results show that the PWLs of vehicles are diversely affected by vehicle speed and the condition of the road surface.
This study aims to provide a methodological framework to estimate the travel demand of hazardous materials transporting vehicles by link and analyze daily traffic patterns on an expressway to develop safety roadway management strategies. Traffic volume of hazardous material vehicles is counted through the on-site investigation at twenty-five tollgates on the expressway, and their demands by a link are predicted through origin-destination flows estimation. The result shows that the number of the domestic hazardous materials vehicles is approximately 51,207 vehicles per day and it indicates that hazardous materials transport vehicles account for 1.5% of total daily traffic on the internal expressway and 6.2% of total cargo traffic volumes. This study roughly estimated how many hazardous materials vehicles pass through the expressway segment. Thus it is expected to be utilized for establishing a systematic highway management strategy in the future by calculating the traffic volume of the hazardous material vehicles traveling on the interstate expressway.
The objective of this Paper is to derive an adjustment factor for the presence of heavy vehicles when estimating capacity at unsignalized intersections (and/or at modern roundabouts). According to the 1997 and 2000 Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), potential capacity in such cases is estimated by simply adjusting base critical gap and base follow-up time. However, the procedure suggested in the HCM may lead to some errors in the adjustment, hence resulting in poor evaluation and design for the intersections, because it determines the value of adjusting factors by only the number of lanes on main streets regardless of the types of heavy vehicles. This paper shows a simple formula for making the adjustment. This formula is much like the HCM formula used for heavy vehicles in estimating highway capacity by the adoption of passenger car units (PCU). In contrast to the traditional approaches seen in the HCM, the PCU value of this case is explicitly expressed by the flow rate in the major streams and the gap difference in critical gaps chosen by passenger cars and particular heavy vehicles. Computational results of the adjustment factor are graphically illustrated.

In this study, we calculated the driving duration of individual vehicles according to the availability of rest facility on highway, and suggested indicators indicating the potential risk of accidents caused by long-term driving with weights based on the number of vehicles by driving duration of individual links. Based on this, the methodology for estimating the appropriate location of the highway rest facility considering the driving duration of individual vehicles was presented. Using the DSRC individual vehicle data collected from the highways, the appropriate location of the rest facility was calculated by considering the driving duration by classifying weekdays and weekends for the Gyeongbu Expressway. The results showed that the weekly and weekend high risk indicators were different. In the case of weekdays, the risk indicators of Gimchun JC to Kumho JC for Busan were high, while for weekends, the risk indicators of Ansung JC to Dongtan JC for Seoul and Ansung IC to Bukchunan IC for Busan were high. This study has great significance in that it provides a framework for detailed analysis of link units by using non-aggregated data of individual vehicle units. In addition, it is significant that the reasonable driving duration reflecting the behavior of individual vehicles was calculated by analyzing the use of rest facilities.
The impact behavior of a multigirder concrete bridge under single and multiple moving vehicles is studied based on correlated road surface characteristics. The bridge structure is modeled as grillage beam system. A 3D nonlinear vehicle model with eleven degrees of freedom is utilized according to the HS20-44 truck design loading in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications. A triangle correlation model is introduced to generate four classes of longitudinal road surface roughness as multi-correlated random processes along deck transverse direction. On the basis of a correlation length of approximately half the bridge width, the upper limits of impact factors obtained under confidence level of 95 percent and side-by-side three-truck loading provide probability-based evidence for the evaluation of AASHTO specifications. The analytical results indicate that a better transverse correlation among road surface roughness generally leads to slightly higher impact factors. Suggestions are made for the routine maintenance of this type of highway bridges.

Traffic and emergency monitoring systems are essential constituents of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies, but the lack of traffic monitoring has become a primary weakness in providing prompt emergency services. Demonstrated in numerous military applications, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have great potentials as a part of ITS infrastructure for providing quick and real-time aerial video images of large surface area to the ground. Despite of obvious advantages of UAVs for traffic monitoring and many other civil applications, it is rare to encounter success stories of UAVs in civil application including transportation. The objective of this paper is to report the outcomes of research supported by the state agency in US to investigate the feasibility of integrating UAVs into urban highway traffic monitoring as a part of ITS infrastructure. These include current technical and regulatory issues, and possible suggestions for a future UAV system in civil applications.
In this paper, we design a hybrid controller for a safe lane change maneuver in automated highway systems(AHS). The proposed hybrid controller consists of a supervisor which controls the behaviors of discrete-event dynamic systems, and a regulator which controls the operations of continuous-variable dynamic systems. The supervisor determines whether the system starts a maneuver or not, via a condition for a safety, and gives orders to the regulator for performing the maneuvers. And the regulator tracks the planned path generated in the supervisor. The conditions for a safe lane change maneuver are proposed using the velocity, the acceleration, and geometrical relationship of vehicles.
NIC@E is the software developed by authors. The program provides the noise level in outdoors due to various noise source types : construction machines including blast sources, railroad vehicles and automobiles. It operates in the Windows system. In this paper, a highway traffic noise has been evaluated using various types of approach : Ray-tracing method, NIRI method, JAS method. In order to compare the noise estimation performance for various models, a measurement is conducted on a 8 lane express highway at the distance of 25 m and 50 m from the lane. The result shows that the ray tracing and JAS model predict the measured value well within 2dB deviaton. The NIRI model, however, underestimates the highway noise level, as the distance between the source and receiver increases.

In this paper, we propose fast object detection method of the cars by applying YOLOv2(You Only Look Once version 2) and UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) while on the highway. We operated Darknet, OpenCV, CUDA and Deep Learning Server(SDX-4185) for our simulation environment. YOLOv2 is recently developed fast object detection algorithm that can detect various scale objects as fast speed. YOLOv2 convolution network algorithm allows to calculate probability by one pass evaluation and predicts location of each cars, because object detection process has simple single network. In our result, we could find cars on the highway area as fast speed and we could apply to the real time.
