Epidemiology, Incidence and Mortality of Bladder Cancer and their Relationship with the Development Index in the World

  • Background: Bladder cancer is an international public health problem. It is the ninth most common cancer and the fourteenth leading cause of death due to cancer worldwide. Given aging populations, the incidence of this cancer is rising. Information on the incidence and mortality of the disease, and their relationship with level of economic development is essential for better planning. The aim of the study was to investigate bladder cancer incidence and mortality rates, and their relationship with the the Human Development Index (HDI) in the world. Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from incidence and mortality rates presented by GLOBOCAN in 2012. Data on HDI and its components were extracted from the global bank site. The number and standardized incidence and mortality rates were reported by regions and the distribution of the disease were drawn in the world. For data analysis, the relationship between incidence and death rates, and HDI and its components was measured using correlation coefficients and SPSS software. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: In 2012, 429,793 bladder cancer cases and 165,084 bladder death cases occurred in the world. Five countries that had the highest age-standardized incidence were Belgium 17.5 per 100,000, Lebanon 16.6/100,000, Malta 15.8/100,000, Turkey 15.2/100,000, and Denmark 14.4/100,000. Five countries that had the highest age-standardized death rates were Turkey 6.6 per 100,000, Egypt 6.5/100,000, Iraq 6.3/100,000, Lebanon 6.3/100,000, and Mali 5.2/100,000. There was a positive linear relationship between the standardized incidence rate and HDI (r=0.653, P<0.001), so that there was a positive correlation between the standardized incidence rate with life expectancy at birth, average years of schooling, and the level of income per person of population. A positive linear relationship was also noted between the standardized mortality rate and HDI (r=0.308, P<0.001). There was a positive correlation between the standardized mortality rate with life expectancy at birth, average years of schooling, and the level of income per person of population. Conclusions: The incidence of bladder cancer in developed countries and parts of Africa was higher, while the highest mortality rate was observed in the countries of North Africa and the Middle East. The program for better treatment in developing countries to reduce mortality from the cancer and more detaiuled studies on the etiology of are essential.

Relationships between Body Shape, Body Image and Health Complaints in Women Registered at a Facility for Managing Body Shape (여성의 체형과 신체상, 건강문제 호소간의 관계 - 체형관리 시설에 등록한 여성을 대상으로 -)

  • This study aims at examining relationships between perceived body shape, body image and health complaints among 88 women registered at a facility for managing body shape, which leads to adequate management of obesity in women for healthy lives. The survey was conducted by using a questionnaire consisted of 12 items of general characteristics and interests for weight control, 47 items of body image, and 57 items of Cornell Medical Index(CMI). The data were analyzed by using mean standard deviation, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results are following. 1. The means of age, body weight, height of the women were 27.02 years, 56.02 years, 56.03kg, 161.71cm, respectively. The level of obesity by body shape was 47.7% for standard type, 26.2% for slim type, 26.1% for fat type. Those women graduated from high school or higher education institutions were 97.7%. 2. More than 70% of the subjects perceived their weight as overweight, while 26.1% of the women were fat according to the level of obesity. Ninety percent of the subjects were not satisfied with their body shape. 3. Body weight increased most during middle and high school days. The women became interested in weight control through talks with friends(35.2%), influence of mass communication(34.1%), and social custom(22.7%). As to the method of weight control, subject's own judgement(54.5%) revealed highest percentage, whereas only 20% of the subjects adopted prescriptions of experts for weight control or of doctors. Those who had side reactions from weight control were 30.7%. High percentages of the women reported the decrease the amount of eating(54.5%), the increase the amount of exercise(27.3%) as the effective methods of weight control. 4. The score of body image differed significantly by the perceived body shape : the score was highest in the perceived standard type. 5. The level of health complaints did not differ by the perceived body shape. In relation to the level of obesity, physical health complaints were high in the groups of very slim type and of very fat type, while mental health complaints were high in the groups of very slim type and of fat type. 6. Very high correlations were observed between the perceived body shape and body image and between physical health complaints and mental health complaints.

Trend of Socioeconomic Inequality in Participation in Cervical Cancer Screening among Korean Women (자궁경부암 검진 수검률의 불평등 추이)

  • Objectives : While cervical cancer is one of the leading cancers among women worldwide, there are a number of effective early detection tests available. However, the participation rates in cervical cancer screening among Korean women remain low. After the nationwide efforts in 1988 and thereafter to encourage participation in cervical cancer screening, few studies have investigated the effects of socioeconomic inequality on participation in cervical cancer screening. The purpose of this study was to investigate 1) the level of socioeconomic disparities in receiving cervical cancer screening by age group and 2) if there was an improvement in reducing these disparities between 1995 and 2001. Methods : Using data from the Korean National Health Status, Health Behavior and Belief Survey in 1995, the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1998 and 2001 (sample sizes of 2,297, 3,738, and 3,283), age-standardized participation rates were calculated according to education level, equivalized household income, and job status. Odds ratios and the relative inequality index (RII) were also calculated after controlling for age. Results : Women with lower education levels were less likely to attend the screening test, and the disparities by education level were most pronounced among women aged 60 years and older. The RIIs among women 60 years and older were 3.64, 4.46, and 8.64 in 1995, 1998, and 2001, respectively. Higher rates of participation were reported among those in the highest income category, which was more notable among the middle aged women (40s and 50s). An inconsistent trend in the rate of participation in cervical cancer screening by occupational level was found. Conclusions : Indicators of socioeconomic position seem to have varying impacts on the inequalities in the rates of participation in cervical cancer screening according to age group. These results demonstrate the need for more aggressive and age-based interventions and policy programs to eliminate the remaining inequalities.

The Adolescents' Consumer Knowledge and Consumption Behavior and Related Variables (청소년의 소비자지식과 소비 행태 및 관련변인)

  • The purposes of this study are to examine the adolescents' consumer knowledge and consumption behavior and analyze the factors affecting them. The sample of this study is 640 middle school students living in kyunggi province. The data are collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed by the descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the third grade students and the female students get higher scores in the consumer knowledge compared with the first grade and the male students. Other factors affecting the level of consumer knowledge are occupation of parents, education level of mother, household income and GPA. Second, the consumption behavior of students is moderately resonable and affected by sex and grade of students, education level of mother, household income, and GPA. Third, the adolescent's consumer knowledge affects their consumption behavior. The results of multiple regression analysis show that 4% to 9% of variances of sub categories of the consumption behavior are explained by the level of consumer knowledge. Since the consumer knowledge learned at schools is rarely transferred to the reasonable consumption behavior, the systematic and relevant consumer education considering the development stages of adolescents is required in the future.

Knowledge and Educational Experience about CPR in Dental Hygiene Students (치위생과 학생의 심폐소생술(CPR) 관련 지식수준 및 교육실태)

  • This paper reports is a descriptive study for analyzing the knowledge level and educational condition of dental hygiene students regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR). This study was implemented from May 24, 2010 to June 4, 2010. The results were as follows: 1. The score was low for the knowledge level of CPR (3.72 out of 8.0). 2. The knowledge level of CPR was higher in the students with heart disease in their family than in those without(t=5.725, P<0.05). 3. While students had a high percentage of correct answers e.g. 93.5% and 73.8% for the mouth-to-mouth CPR and hand position in pressing the upper part of the belly, they had low percentage of correct answers, e.g. 8.2%, 28.9%, 25.4%, and 49.2% for consciousness and breathing check, maintaining the airway and the time to brain damage from a heart attack, respectively. 4. The students used TV(55.2%) and the Internet(20.1%) as the medium for observing CPR. 5. 60.2% of students did not have any training in CPR. 6. More than 90.0% of students required training in CPR. Most of the students requested CPR training when they attended middle and high school. They had hoped to receive CPR training at school or a specialized training organization. In conclusion, the knowledge level of CPR of dental hygiene students is low, and the need for training and participation is high. Therefore, dental hygiene students should receive CPR training.

Impact of The Experience of being Discriminated on Their Experience of Discrimination: Focusing on The Moderating effect of the education for human rights (청소년의 차별피해경험이 차별가해경험에 미치는 영향 -인권교육의 조절효과를 중심으로-)

  • This study investigated the impact of the experience of being discriminated on their actual experience of discrimination, and verified the moderating effect of the education for human rights. The data used in this study were sampled from the 2014 children and youth human rights survey of Korea National Youth Policy Institute, and 4,023 students in middle or high school were selected for the final data analysis. The moderation model was analyzed by applying SPSS PROCESS macro. The analysis suggested the following. First, it was shown that the experience of being discriminated and the level of help and frequency of the education for human rights were significantly distinguished in the statistics. Second, even though the experience of being discriminated and the level of help of the education for human rights meaningfully influenced the experience of discrimination, frequency of education did not. Third, it was verified that the level of help from education of human rights moderates the relationship between the experience of discrimination and the experience of being discriminated. It also showed that the higher the level of help is, the more the experience of being discriminated exerts influence on the experience of discrimination. Thus, on the basis of the results, the theoretical discussion on the youth discrimination was drawn out and the practical implication on the direction of the education for human rights was suggested.

Middle School Students' Construction of Physics Inquiry Problems and Variables Isolation and Clarification during Small Group Open-inquiry Activities (중학생의 소집단 자유탐구활동 중 물리 영역 탐구문제의 구성과 변인 추출 및 명료화 과정)

  • The study aimed to analyze middle school students construction of physics inquiry problems for open inquiry from the viewpoint of variable isolation and clarification, and investigate students' difficulties during the processes of variable isolation and clarification to get implications for teaching and learning strategies for small group open inquiry activities which have been included in the 2007 national curriculum. The participants were 4 students who had attended an outreach program for the science gifted run by a university institution located in Seoul area. They performed an open inquiry on egg drop for 13 lessons for 30 hours. Level descriptions for variable isolation and clarification have been developed and applied to analyze students' inquiry problems and variables included by the problems. Students iterated inquiry processed 5 times and the inquiry problem showed progress gradually. Dependent variables have been isolated ahead and the levels of variable isolation and clarification showed higher than the independent variables. Many kinds of independent variables isolated extensively and the independent variables and control variables have been mingled. One of the reasons why students had some difficulties in isolation of independent variables could be the absence of theoretical models. The realities of school lab could restrict the variable isolation and clarification as well as topic selections. Some sensory or extensive variables such as broken eggs and drop height seem to be salient to be focused on as core variables. Lack of background knowledges could be one of the reasons for students' difficulties in variable clarification, such as theoretical definitions and operational definitions. As a result of lacking background knowledges, students could not construct theoretical models even though they could isolate and clarify variables as scientific lexical definitions. Some perceptions of inquiry as trial and error or reckless establishment of causal relations between variables could be accounted as one reason.

A Study on the Feature of Using Media for Education through Longitudinal Data Analysis (종단자료 분석을 통한 청소년 미디어 교육 활용 특성 분석 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the changing trajectory of using educational media through longitudinal data analysis. We categorize the feature of using educational media as usage for learning, usage for information, and usage for the game. We explore the longitudinal changing patterns of usage for learning, usage for information, and usage for the game by LGM(Longitudinal Growth Modeling). We also find the gender difference between these longitudinal changing trajectories. We used 3,499 samples of KYPS middle school second-grade panel data. We found these results: (a) Both usage for learning and information are statically significant variability in initial level and rate of change. Both of the changing trajectories have increased. (b) Girls have a higher rate of the change both in the usage of learning and information than boys over time. (c) There is a statistically significant individual variability in initial levels and rate of change in the usage of the game over time. (d) Boys have a higher rate of initial value than girls in the usage of games, but there is no significant difference in the rate of changing trajectories.

The Moderating Effect of Happiness on the Relation between Stress and Generalized Anxiety in Adolescents (청소년의 스트레스와 범불안 관계에서 행복감의 조절효과)

  • This study was conducted to verify the moderating effect of happiness in the relationship between stress and generalized anxiety in adolescents. The subjects of the study were 54,948 middle and high school students who participated in the 16th Adolescent's Health Behavior Survey conducted in 2020. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and Process Macro 4.0. The results of the study showed that stress had a significant effect on generalized anxiety of adolescent. The higher the stress, the higher the level of generalized anxiety. And it was found that happiness moderated the relationship between stress and generalized anxiety. In other words, it was confirmed that happiness has the effect of buffering the negative impact of stress on generalized anxiety. Therefore, in order to alleviate generalized anxiety in adolescents, it is recommended to prepare and implement various programs that can improve happiness.

Awareness and Practice of Sugar Reduction in School Foodservice and the Practice of Nutrition Education in Daegu (대구시 영양(교)사의 학교급식 당류 저감화 인식도와 실천도 및 영양교육 실태)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the awareness and practice of reducing sugar in school meals and the status of nutrition education regarding sugar reduction. Methods: An online survey was conducted on 101 nutrition teachers (dietitians) working at elementary, middle, and high schools in Daegu. Results: School nutrition teachers in Daegu recognized the need for efforts to reduce the sugar intake in the Korean diet, and it was found that elementary nutrition teachers were more aware of the implementation of the sugar reduction policy at the national level than middle and high school nutrition teachers (P = 0.002). Among the policies to reduce sugar intake at the national level, there was a high need for the promotion of self-control and limiting the sales of food with high sugar content in schools and their vicinity. The degree of practice for reducing sugar in school meals was found to be higher in the preparation, purchase, and cooking stage compared to the serving stage (P < 0.05). There was a high need for changing the preferences of the subjects for a sweet taste as a means of reducing the sugar in school meals. Thirty-six percent of nutrition teachers conducted sugar reduction education, and sending out school newsletters was the highest type of nutrition education at 80.6%. Conclusions: To effectively promote reduced sugar intake in school meals, it is necessary to change the preference of the subjects for sweetness and to conduct continuous education that can improve the awareness of people for reducing their sugar intake. For this, it is necessary to set aside time for nutrition education and to prepare an institutional framework for providing this education.
