In the case of designing superconducting power apparatuses using the second generation high temperature superconducting wire, it is necessary to have a tape-splicing technique to achieve low splice resistance between coated conductor (CC) tapes. In this paper, an experimental splice method between YBCO CC tapes is proposed for a coil application. Splices were performed with a 37Pb-63Sn solder. YBCO samples were fabricated with various pressures and cooling rates. Joint resistances of the spliced samples of jointed YBCO CC tapes were measured and evaluated from V-I curves. In addition, optical micrographs were obtained to analyze the cross sectional microstructure of jointed samples.

For high-temperature superconducting power applications that need large current capacity, a large current conductor manufactured using multiple superconducting tape is required. Conductors being studied for large currents capacity such as CORC, TSTC, and RACC have advantages and disadvantages, and in order to use these conductors in coil form and apply them to AC power devices, research on magnetization loss occurring in superconductors due to external magnetic fields is essential. To accurately measure magnetization loss in a conductor that is twisted by stacking straight conductors like TSTC, the correlation between the measuring system and the shape of the sample must be clearly known to accurately measure the loss. In this paper, we will confirm the difference in magnetization loss measurement values according to the correlation between the length of the pickup coil and the twist pitch of the sample in CORC and TSTC shapes, and review considerations for accurate magnetization loss measurement from the results.
Rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) coated conductor (CC) tapes have already been commercialized but still possess some issues in terms of manufacturing cost, anisotropic in-field performance, $I_c$ response to mechanical loads such as delamination, homogeneity of current transport property, and production length. Development on improving its performance properties to meet the needs in practical device applications is underway and simplification of the tape's architecture and manufacturing process are also being considered to enhance the performance-cost ratio. As compared to low temperature superconductors (LTS), high temperature superconductor (HTS) REBCO CC tapes provide a much wider range of operating temperature and a higher critical current density at 4.2 K making it more attractive in magnet and coil applications. The superior properties of the REBCO CC tapes under magnetic field have led to the development of superconducting magnets capable of producing field way above 23.5 T. In order to achieve its optimum performance, the electromechanical properties under different deformation modes and magnetic field should be evaluated for practical device design. This paper gives an overview of the effects of mechanical stress/strain on $I_c$ in HTS CC tapes due to uniaxial tension, bending deformation, transverse load, and including the electrical performance of a CC tape joint which were performed by our group at ANU in the last decade.
A double pancake winding method is widely used to make the superconducting magnet, using high temperature superconductor (HTS) tape. In the double pancake winding method, the joints with contact resistances between double pancake coils are inevitably needed. The electrical joule heating on the contacts causes refrigerant loss during operation. And a space outside the winding, for splices and mechanical support, is more than that for its layer-wound equivalent. In this paper, a double pancake winding method in order to reduce the number of the joints was proposed. Both of the double pancake coils using the conventional winding method and the proposed winding method have been fabricated and tested to make the solution technically feasible in the double pancake winding method. Especially, critical-current tests of the fabricated double pancake coils were conducted in order to show the same performance and confirm contact resistances between double pancake coils.
A 1 MV A single phase high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer was manufactured. In order to reduce AC loss generated in the HTS winding, winding was concentrically arranged. Operation temperature is set at 65K to increase the critical current and reduce the amount of HTS tape usage and the volume. The cryogenic system which consists of main cryostat with the windings and secondary cryostat with 2 GM coolers and cryopump on top and heat exchanger inside is also designed and the cooling performance is simulated with Fluent. Temperature distribution of the windings is investigated whether the windings are kept under designed operation temperature.

Critical current(Ic) degradation of HTS tapes after bending is one of the hottest issues in HTS development and application studies. Many people are measuring Ic degradations for effect of bending radius. However even if the bending radius is larger than the breaking radius a HTS tapes can be damaged by repetitive bending, which is unavoidable in the winding processes. Therefore, We studied the Ic degradation after repetitive bending. at 77K with self-field, of Bi-2223 tapes processed by "Powder-in-Tube" technique, which was made by America Superconductor Corporation(AMSC) and superconductiing tapes that strain is imposed measured critical current by temperature difference of L$N_2$ and normal temperature. Like this, critical current could measure that degradation about 1~3% by temperature difference. These results will amount the most important basis data in power electric machine of superconductivity cable, magnet, etc that winding work is require.

Adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) for hydrogen re-liquefaction operating between 24 K and 20 K has been designed. $Dy_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}Ni_2$, whose Curie temperature is 24 K, is selected as a magnetic refrigerant. The magnetic refrigerant powder is sintered with oxygen-free high purity copper (OFHC) powder to enhance its effective thermal conductivity as well as to achieve relatively high frequency. A perforated plate heat exchanger (PPHE) operated with forced convection is utilized as a heat switch. The forced convection heat switch is expected to have fast response relative to a conventional gas-gap heat switch. A conduction-cooled high Tc superconducting (HTS) magnet is employed to apply external magnetic field variation on a magnetic refrigerant. $2^{nd}$ generation GdBCO coated conductor HTS tape with Kapton$^{(R)}$ insulation (SUNAM Inc.) will be utilized for the HTS magnet. The magnetization and demagnetization processes are to be achieved by the AC operation of the HTS magnet. The designed magnetic field and target ramp rate of the HTS magnet are over 4 T with 180 A and 0.4 T/s, respectively. AC loss distribution on HTS magnet is theoretically estimated.

To develop a 100 hp high temperature superconducting(HTS) motor with high efficiency first in Korea, we fabricated a HTS field winding and test. HTS field winding is composed of sixteen HTS race track shaped coils wound with stainless steel-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor by react and wind fabrication method. Nomex paper was used for electrical insulation. Each of four magnet pole assemblies was constructed with four double pancake sub-coils, mechanically stacked and electrically in series. Four magnet assemblies were fixed on an aluminum support structure to make effective heat transfer. The Critical current (Ic) was 41.5A at 77K and self field. However the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was 35A. Joule heat generated by each joints between sub-coils was lower than 1mW at 77K and 34A. And Joule heat generated by the joints between field coils was lower than 10mW at 77K and 34A. Joule heat of the whole field winding was 1W at 77K and 32A. And so, the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was more important than Joule heats generated by all joints. The operating current must be lower than the lowest Ic of all the sub-coils. In this paper, design, construction and testing of HTS field winding, Joule heat generated by the joints, and operating current were discussed.

A 1 MV A single phase high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer was manufactured and tested. The rated voltages of primary and secondary of the HTS transformer are 22.9 kV and 6.6 kV respectively. BSCCO-2223 HTS tape was used for HTS windings of 1 MV A HTS transformer. In order to reduce AC loss generated in the HTS winding, the type of concentric arrangement winding was adopted to a 1 MV A HTS transformer. Single HTS tape for primary windings and 4 parallel HTS tapes for secondary windings were used considering the each rated current of the HTS transformer. A core of HTS transformer was fabricated as a shell type core made of laminated silicon steel plate. And a GFRP cryostat with a room temperature bore was also manufactured. The characteristic tests of 1 MV A HTS transformer were performed such as no load test, short circuit test and several insulation tests at 65 K using sub-cooled liquid nitrogen. From the results of tests, the validity of design of HTS transformer was ascertained.
When high temperature superconducting tapes is fabricated using the PIT (Powder In Tube) method, the length of HTS tapes is increased more than 500 ${\sim}$ 1,000 times of initial powder packed billet. On mechanical processing, heterogeneous properties between the ceramic superconducting core and Ag/Ag alloy sheath occur the non-uniformity deformation as like sausaging that deteriorate the critical current properties of HTS tapes. In this study, we investigated the workability of Bi-2223/Ag/Ag alloy sheath tapes fabricated by the PIT method involving a number of different mechanical processes, multi drawing and rolling. In order to obtain the high critical current density and high uniformity of Bi-2223/Ag sheath tapes, the influences of powder packing density, drawing die angle and rolling parameters were studied. We found that the roll diameter is an important variable in the rolling process, as critical current of tapes rolled using 250 mm rolls was higher than that using 150 mm rolls.
