Dynamic Interrelationship between the Evolution of Structural Systems and Façade Design in Tall Buildings: From the Home Insurance Building in Chicago to the Present

  • The emergence of tall buildings in the late $19^{th}$ century was possible by using new materials and separating the role of structures and that of non-structural walls from the traditional load-bearing walls that acted as both. The role of structures is more important in tall buildings than in any other building type due to the "premium for height". Among the walls freed from their structural roles, façades are of conspicuous importance as building identifiers, significant definers of building aesthetics, and environmental mediators. This paper studies dynamic interrelationship between the evolution of tall building structural systems and façade design, beginning from the early tall buildings of skeletal structures with primitive curtainwalls to the recent supertall buildings of various tubular and outrigger structures with more advanced contemporary curtainwalls.

  • Coupling adjacent building with supplemental damping devices is a developing method of reduced structural response due to wind and seismic excitations. The philosophy is to allow structures, vibrating at different frequencies, to exert control forces upon one another to reduce the overall responses of the system. This paper studies the effect of installing vibration control devices of two high rise building structures(49 stories and 42 stories) connected by sky-bridge. According to the analysis results the use of sky-bridge can be effective in increasing damping ratio of the system.

Stability of Diagrid Structures

  • In this paper, the stability requirements for diagrid and mega braced structures are examined. The role of the secondary bracing system for the stability of a diagrid structure is discussed. A simple procedure is proposed for the design of the secondary bracing system when it is required. As a case study, the design of the Hearst Tower diagrid and its secondary bracing system are presented.

  • Increasing flexibility and lightness of recently built high-rise buildings make the structures susceptible to loads such as earthquakes and winds. Therefore, higher performance vibration control systems to reduce the vibration levels are demanded more than any time in the past. One of typical active vibration control systems is the active mass damper(AMD). In this paper, an active vibration control system consisting of small shaking table, building model, sensors, signal processing board and AMD is constructed. The dynamic characteristics of these individual systems are investigated through the experimental study. The performance of the active vibration control system is verified through harmonic resonant load excitation on building model.

  • Recently, deep excavation for high-rise buildings occurs frequently to accommodate the rapidly increasing population in urban area. The stability of the earth retaining structures for deep excavation becomes more critical. The behavior of the earth retaining structures should be accurately predicted in a design stage, but the predicted behavior is different from the measured data due to uncertain soil properties and problems in construction. In this study the back-analysis using Powell's optimization theory was performed to match the measured deflection and results obtained from back-analysis were presented.

The Evolution of Seismic Engineering and Design of Ultra Tall Buildings in China Innovations and Sustainability

  • With the booming of construction and property industries in China, the demand for high-rises and mega-scale buildings with more integrated building functions, open- and tailor-shaped outlooks, better connections to municipal infrastructures, and higher grades of building importance has been increasing in the past two decades. The seismic design and engineering of such modern mega-buildings face engineering challenges such as hazard mitigation of extreme actions and surroundings, integrated structural frameworks and building skins, complex connections, and overall construction efficiency. It is the work of a new generation of civil and structural engineers to enhance engineering efficiency and achieve overall engineering, environmental, and economical effectiveness for these high-rise projects. This paper elaborates the above topics through case studies on the design and construction of four such developments in China. Some rethinking is conducted on evolution in modern seismic engineering and design through innovation to achieve an acceptable level of overall sustainability and building effectiveness.

Seismic Isolation and Response Control of Buildings in Japan

  • An overview of seismic isolation and structural control in Japan is presented. The paper includes a mention of the history of aseismic technology and the earthquake threat in Japan, summarizes the merits of seismic isolation and response control, and discusses the types of devices used and some recent project examples. The projects presented are mostly examples of response control used for high-rise buildings. These types of buildings are not amendable to seismic isolation, and are a challenge to applying damping devices, as their high aspect ratio means that their dominant deformation mode is bending. Japanese engineers have developed a range of unique techniques to apply response control to these types of structures. Concluding remarks discuss some of the current challenges to expanding the use of seismic isolation and response control technologies.

자율주행차량과 건축의 결합을 위한 고층 구조 시스템 제안 및 설계 적용 (Proposal and Design Application of High-Rise Structural System for Combining Autonomous Vehicles and Architecture)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose future-oriented high-rise buildings where the vehicle is parked at the top of the building. At the same time, the vehicle is used as a part of the building along with the advent of the era of autonomous driving. The suspended structure is proposed as a suitable structural system for architectural planning. This system is free to design because there are no limitations on column planning compared to conventional designs. In particular, the low-floor plan can be used as an open space because colums are not arranged in the lower-floors. Thereby opened low-floor plan has advantages that visual perception of the space is improved, noise problems along the side of the street is solved and planning underground parking spaces are easier. These advantages can solve the problem of overlapping columns with vehicle traffic in the building. However, there are some problems that the suspension structure is mainly a formal form and the usable area is small compared to the core area because it is a core-oriented structural system. In this regard, a new structural system was proposed by combining the concept of suspended structure and cable stayed column. Therefore, this paper analyzes the existing style of high-rise housing suspended Structure and proposes a new structural system and the concept of design for autonomous vehicles.

Rapid Visual Screening통한 건물 높이별 테러위험도 비교 분석 (A Comparative Analysis of Terrorism Threat Level of Domestic Tall Buildings and General Buildings through Rapid Visual Screening)

  • 최근 테러의 대상 범위는 보다 광범위해 지고 있으며, 국내의 테러발생위험이 지속적으로 증가하고 있는 가운데 테러의 형태는 국가의 중요시설과 같은 경성표적(Hard Target)에서 초고층건물과 같은 다중이용시설의 연성표적(Soft Target)으로 변화하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 Fema 455 - Rapid Visual Screening을 통해 국내의 초고층건물과 고층건물의 테러위험도 평가결과를 국내의 저층건물의 테러위험도 평가결과와 비교하여 초고층건물의 테러위험도를 분석하였다. 그 결과 초고층건물 및 고층건물은 저층건물에 비해 Consequences, Vulnerability Rating보다 Threat Rating항목이 상대적으로 높았으며, 이는 초고층건물의 거주인원 및 국가적 또는 지역적인 상징성 및 가시성 부분에서 테러위험도가 높은 것이 주요 원인으로 분석되었다.

강풍시 고층건물의 진동특성 및 사용성 평가 (Vibration Characteristics and the Serviceability Evaluation of High-rise Building during Strong Wind)

  • 철골조 고층건물을 대상으로 풍응답계측을 실시하여, 감쇠율과 고유진동수의 진폭의존성을 검토하였다. 진폭의존성의 검토를 위하여 RD법을 사용하였다. RD법에 의한 진동특성을 하프파워법에 의한 진동특성과 비교하여 두 방법 사이의 상관관계를 분석하였다. 또한 일본, 캐나다기준에 의한 강풍시의 사용성평가를 통하여 두 가지 방법의 적용성을 검토하였다. RD법에 의하여 감쇠율의 진폭의존성을 확인하였으며, 고유진동수의 진폭의존성은 공학적인 의미에서 상대적으로 매우 작은 것을 확인하였다. 또한 계측건물은 사용성을 만족하였으며, 일본기준이 캐나다기준보다 더욱 엄격함을 확인하였다.
