This paper proposes a modularized charge equalization converter for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) lithium-ion battery cells, in which the intra-module and the inter-module equalizer are Implemented. Considering the high voltage HEV battery pack, over approximately 300V, the proposed equalization circuit modularizes the entire $M^*N$ cells; in other words, M modules in the string and N cells in each module. With this modularization, low voltage stress on all the electronic devices, below roughly 64V, can be obtained. In the intra-module equalization, a current-fed DC/DC converter with cell selection switches is employed. By conducting these selection switches, concentrated charging of the specific under charged cells can be performed. On the other hand, the inter-module equalizer makes use of a voltage-fed DC/DC converter for bi-directional equalization. In the proposed circuit, these two converters can share the MOSFET switch so that low cost and small size can be achieved. In addition, the absence of any additional reset circuitry in the inter-module equalizer allows for further size reduction, concurrently conducting the multiple cell selection switches allows for shorter equalization time, and employing the optimal power rating design rule allows fur high power density to be obtained. Experimental results of an implemented prototype show that the proposed equalization scheme has the promised cell balancing performance for the 7Ah HEV lithium-ion battery string while maintaining low voltage stress, low cost, small size, and short equalization time.

Lithium-ion batteries have a small volume, light weight and high energy density, maximizing the utilization of mobile devices. It is widely used for various purposes such as electric bicycles and scooters (e-Mobility), mass energy storage (ESS), and electric and hybrid vehicles. To date, lithium-ion batteries have grown to focus on increasing energy density and reducing production costs in line with the required capacity. However, the research and development level of lithium-ion batteries seems to have reached the limit in terms of energy density. In addition, the charging time is an important factor for using lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, it was urgent to develop a high-speed charger to shorten the charging time. In this thesis, a discharger was fabricated to evaluate the capacity and characteristics of Li-ion battery pack which can be used for e-mobility. To achieve this, a smart discharger is designed with a combination of active load, current sensor, and temperature sensor. To carry out this thesis, an active load switching using sensor control circuit, signal processing circuit, and FET was designed and manufactured as hardware with the characteristics of active discharger. And as software for controlling the hardware of the active discharger, a Raspberry Pi control device and a touch screen program were designed. The developed discharger is designed to change the 600W capacity battery in the form of active load.
Although lithium-ion batteries are currently the most reliable power supply system for various mobile applications, further improvement in energy density is still required as the need for batteries in large energy-consuming devices is rapidly growing. However, in the anode, the most widely commercialized graphite-based anode materials almost face theoretical limitations. In addition, sodium-ion batteries have been actively studied to replace expensive charge carriers with cheaper ones. Accordingly, conversion-based materials have been extensively studied as high-capacity anode materials in both lithiumion batteries and sodium-ion batteries because their theoretical capacity is twice or thrice higher than that of insertion-based materials. This review will provide a comprehensive understanding of conversion-based materials, including basic charge storage behaviors, critical drawbacks that should be overcome, and practical material design for high-performance.

The battery cells in lithium-ion battery pack assembled with high-capacity and high-power pouch cells, are commonly cooled with thin aluminum cooling plates in contact with the cells. For HEV/EV lithium-ion battery systems assembled with high-capacity, high-power pouch cells, the cells are commonly cooled with thin aluminum cooling plates in contact with the cells. Thin aluminum cooling plates are cooled by cold plate with coolant flow paths. In this study, the effect of the battery cooling system design including aluminum cooling plate thickness and various position of cold plate on the cooling performance are investigated by using finite element methods (FEM). Optimal cooling plate and cold plate design are proposed for improving the uniformity in temperature distributions as well as lowering average temperature for the cells with large capacities based on the simulation results.

Graphite is used as a negative electrode active material of Lithium ion capacitor (LIC). At the cathod, electrostatic reaction of EDLC is a very high reaction rate compared to a oxidaion reduction reaction. When the graphite was expanded that the length between the sheet, the intercalation of lithium ions is smoothed. And thus, the power density increases. By measuring the XRD, it was confirmed that the increase in interlayer spacing of graphite. And by measuring an electrochemical reactionin Lithium Ion Battery (LIB), it was confirmed the tendency of power density is improved.
This paper proposes a modularized two-stage charge equalization converter for a series-connected lithium-ion battery string. In this paper, the series-connected battery sting is modularized into M modules, and each module has K cells in series. With this modularization, low voltage stress on the electronic devices can be achieved. A two-stage dc-dc converter with cell selection switches is employed. The first stage dc-dc converter steps down the high bus voltage to about 10 V. The second stage dc-dc converter integrated with selection switches equalizes the cell voltages. A prototype for 88 lithium-ion battery cells is optimally designed and implemented. Experimental results verify that the proposed equalization method has good cell balancing performance showing low voltage stress, small size, and low cost.
Increasing demand of energy, the depletion of fossil fuel reserves, energy security and the climate change have forced us to look upon alternate energy resources. For today's electric vehicles that run on lithium-ion batteries, one of the biggest downsides is the limited range between recharging. Over the past several years, researchers have been working on lithium-air battery. These batteries could significantly increase the range of electric vehicles due to their high energy density, which could theoretically be equal to the energy density of gasoline. Li-air batteries are potentially viable ultra-high energy density chemical power sources, which could potentially offer specific energies up to 3000 $Whkg^{-1}$ being rechargeable. This paper provides a review on Lithium air battery as alternate energy resource for the future.

A navigation aid buoy is a kind of safety facility for maritime navigation with a purpose of leading the vessels for navigating, docking and sail off. An advanced rechargeable battery is required for stable power supply for navigation aid buoy as the high magnitude LED lamps, real time location/control for navigation aids and e-Navigation support systems with maritime climate observation equipments have recently been deployed. This study is focused on the lithium battery, especially lithium polymer battery which is believed to be safer than the other types of batteries. The lithium polymer battery reviewed in this study is designed with $LiFePO_4$-based cathode, which has superior safety features to the oxide-based cathodes. Besides, a 3.6kWh battery pack has been built with the above-mentioned unit cells for the purpose of comparative research with lead acid battery system.

A lithium ion secondary battery using carbon as a negative electrode has been developed. Further improvements to increase the cell capacity are expected by modifying the structure of the carbonaceous material. There are hopes for the development of large capacity lithium ion secondary batteries with long cycle, high energy density, high power density, and high energy efficiency. In the present paper, needle cokes from petroleum were examined as an anode of lithium ion secondary battery. Petroleum cokes, MCL(Molten Caustic Leaching) treated in Korea Institute Energy Research, were carbonized at various temperatures of 0, 500, 700, $19700^{\circ}C$ at heating rate of $2^{\circ}C$/min for lh. The electrolyte was used lM liPF6 EC/DEC (1:1). The voltage range of charge & discharge was 0.0V(0.05V) ~ 2.0V. The treated petroleum coke at $700^{\circ}C$ had an initial capacity over 560mAh.g which beyond the theoretical maximum capacity, 372mAh/g for LiC6. This phenomena suggests that carbon materials with disordered structure had higher cell capacity than that the graphitic carbon materials.
This paper presents a new overall system for state-of-available-power (SoAP) prediction for a lithium-ion battery pack. The essential part of this method is based on an adaptive network architecture which utilizes both fuzzy model (FIS) and artificial neural network (ANN) into the framework of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). While battery aging proceeds, the system is capable of delivering accurate power prediction not only for room temperature, but also at lower temperatures at which power prediction is most challenging. Due to design property of ANN, the network parameters are adapted on-line to the current battery states (state-of-charge (SoC), state-of-health (SoH), temperature). SoC is required as an input parameter to SoAP module and high accuracy is crucial for a reliable on-line adaptation. Therefore, a reasonable way to determine the battery state variables is proposed applying a combination of several partly different algorithms. Among other SoC boundary estimation methods, robust extended Kalman filter (REKF) for recalibration of amp hour counters was implemented. ANFIS then achieves the SoAP estimation by means of time forward voltage prognosis (TFVP) before a power pulse occurs. The trade-off between computational cost of batch-learning and accuracy during on-line adaptation was optimized resulting in a real-time system with TFVP absolute error less than 1%. The verification was performed on a software-in-the-loop test bench setup using a 53 Ah lithium-ion cell.
