  • For lighting application, high-power LED nowadays is driven at 350mA and a sensing resistor is used to provide feedback for LED-current regulation. This method adds an IR drop at the output branch, and limits power efficiency as LED current is large and keeps increasing. In this paper, a power efficient LED-current sensing circuit is proposed. The circuit does not use any sensing resistor but extracts LED-current information from the output capacitor of the driver. Controlling the brightness of LEDs requires a driver that provides a constant, regulated current. In one case, the converter may need to step down the input voltage, and, in another, it may need to boost up the output voltage. These situations often arise in applications with wide-ranging ""dirty"" input power sources, such as automotive systems. And, the driver topology must be able to generate a large enough output voltage to forward bias the LEDs. So, to provide this requirements, 13W prototype Buck-Boost Converter is used.

  • Recently, LCD (liquid crystal display) industry is needed to goods of high reliability and wide range temperature condition and it is interested in products for extremely cold condition without failure of light-up. In this experiment, we made the LED backlight unit for Automotive-navigation under the extremely cold condition. And for making this backlight unit, we used to eight side emitting type white LEDs with 3W high power LED. We could know that this backlight unit releases to 18,000 nit in 24W power consumption and start up voltage time is under the 1ms in the ambient temperature at -40.

  • LEDs have been widely used in lighting displays, automobiles, and airplanes owing to their excellent light output characteristics and long lifespan. Though LEDs are manufactured under the same process, variations in impurity concentrations cause electrical deviation among LEDs. The resulting electrical deviation can not only reduce the life time of the LED but also cause non-uniform luminance of LEDs connected in parallel. LED driving circuit is required to solve these problems. In this paper, we propose a LED driving system using Y-type current balancing transformer to maximize the efficiency of the system by removing output stage Schottky diodes. Experimental results are presented to verify the performance of proposed LED driving system that is applied to 80 W LED modules.

  • OFDM systems are much studied for the recent high speed wireless optical communication system. OFDM system has basically high PAPR and ICI easily generated because of non-linearity and RF impairments. In the wireless optical communication system, optical output power driven by current of LED is not linear so that transmission signals are distorted. Therefore, research about reception performance of this nonlinear optical output emitted by non-linear LED transfer function and OFDM signal has been conducted. Nonlinear effect of LED is different from nonlinear effect of OFDM system in the conventional radio communication system, which degrades the BER performance. In this paper, we apply non-linear transfer function of recently studied LED into OFDM system. So, for reducing the PAPR and suppressing the ICI in frequency domain of receiver, we suggest a new PAPR reduction technique to reduce non-linear distortion of LED and an adaptive ICI suppression algorithm so that BER performance may be improved. Also, the proposed method is verified through simulation results.

Study on the Thermal Behavior of Immersion Cooled LED Lighting Engines (담금 냉각되는 LED 조명엔진의 열특성에 대한 연구)

  • This study is aimed at investigating the thermal behavior of immersion-cooled high power LED lighting engines. 3D CFD models have been generated for the numerical analysis. Five cases in terms of the configuration of LED chips have been explored for various passive cooling conditions of the lighting engine, i.e., the natural air convection with a lens, the natural air convection without a lens, the deionized water-immersion cooling condition with a lens. The numerical study reveals that the deionized water-immersion cooled lighting engine has nearly twice better thermal performance than the natural air convection cooled lighting engine containing a lens. The investigation has also demonstrated that the four chips configuration has the better thermal performance than the single chip configuration.

  • 본 논문에서는 8W급 LED 조명등과 조명등을 제어할 수 있는 소형 콘트롤러를 제작 하였다. 고출력 LED를 사용한 LED 전구 개발은 8W 이상 출력 가능한 LED 전구를 DC로 구동, 기존의 AC 방식이 단점인 누전에 의한 화재 위험 방지 기능이 있으며, 주변의 상황을 탐지할 수 있는 센서를 장착하여 방법용으로 활용할 수 있도록 하거나 개별 점등이 가능하도록 하였다. 또한, LED의 수명 확보를 위해 적정 온도이상 상승하지 않도록 발열부를 설계하여 지능형 조명등 시스템으로 응용 가능한 조명등을 개발하였다.

Reliability Testing and Materials Evaluation of Si Sub-Mount based LED Package (실리콘 서브 마운틴 기반의 LED 패키지 재료평가 및 신뢰성 시험)

  • The light emitting diodes(LED) package of new structure is proposed to promote the reliability and lifespan by maximize heat dissipation occurred on the chip. We designed and fabricated the LED packages mixing the advantages of chip on board(COB) based on conventional metal printed circuit board(PCB) and the merits of Si sub-mount using base as a substrate. The proposed LED package samples were selected for the superior efficiency of the material through the sealant properties, chip characteristics, and phosphor properties evaluations. Reliability test was conducted the thermal shock test and flux rate according to the usage time at room temperature, high-temperature operation, high-temperature operation, high-temperature storage, low-temperature storage, high-temperature and high-humidity storage. Reliability test result, the average flux rate was maintained at 97.04% for each items. Thus, the Si sub-mount based LED package is expected to be applicable to high power down-light type LED light sources.

  • Currently, most of TDIS(Train Destination Indicator System) is operated colored-LED type equipment in Korea. This current LED type TDIS equipment has not graceful display and causes passenger's fatigues because of the LED module inherent characteristics as a display light source, high power consumption, high operating and maintenance costs, and et al. To address these several, we are developed new colored-LCD type TDIS equipment. According to our developed new TDIS equipment, we can achieve high resolution and graceful color stone of information display. Thus high graded service are able to provide to passengers. In addition, LCD module decreases power consumption, and it can be used permanently by changing only backlight in comparison with conventional equipment. Therefore we can decrease the maintenance cost and extend durability-period of TDIS equipment using new equipment.

The Thermal and Circuits Design of an LED Bulb Considering Temperature Property (온도 특성을 고려한 LED 전구의 방열 및 회로 설계)

  • Although LEDs have been used in various applications with improving the brightness and luminous efficacy, the electrical and optical characteristics of high power LED varies at different temperature and starting time. In this paper, optimal heat sink and apparatus design were conducted using IR camera and ICEPAK on the LED bulb consisting with fourteen LED array. The temperatures of heat sink and LED device of the designed LED bulb without cooling pan were $74^{\circ}C\;and\;96.8^{\circ}C$, respectively, showing in good themal characteristics. For high efficiency driving circuit of LED array adopted optimal heat sink design, driving circuits of constant voltage and current circuits were suggested and fabricated. As a result the efficacy of all driving circuits showed more than 20 lm/W. Also, the constant current circuits are suitable for signal lamp, hallway lamp, and flash lamp having short operating time(about 30 min). On the other hand, a reading light and indoor lamp having long operating time can be controlled by constant voltage circuit.

Color Saturation Improvement by the Use of Unequal-Area Color Filters for the RGBW LCD with RGB LED Backlit

  • The dependences of color gamut size and power consumption on the area ratio of neutral and green sub-pixels for the RGBW LCD with RGB LED backlit are studied, in which the areas of red and blue sub-pixels are the same and are one quarter of pixel apertu re area. It is found that high color saturation and power saving can be achieved for the proposed RGBW LCD.
