Influence of Stress Ratio of Elastic Waves Generated by Fatigue Crack Growth and Penetration in 6061 Aluminum Plates (6061알루미늄의 피로 균열 성장과 관통에 따른 탄성파의 응력비 영향)

  • The characteristics of elastic waves emanating from crack initiation and propagation in 6061 aluminum alloy subjected to fatigue loading with different stress ratio was investigated. The objective of this study is to determine the properties of the signals generated from each stage of fatigue crack growth. AS a crack propagates, substantial elastic wave occurred just prior to penetration. Then it decreased and the crack penetrated. The waveforms and their power spectra were found to be dependent on the different stress ratio associated with the signals. It is determined that high-frequency signal $0.5{\sim}0.75$ MHz is most likely emitted during crack propagation at peak load of fatigue cycle which release the highest energy. It is determined that 0.3 MHz is closely related to crack closure effect. The frequency peaks below 0.25 MHz may be attributed to fretting or hydraulic noise.

Effect of Fine Copper Sulfides on the High Cycle Fatigue Properties of Bake Hardening Steels for Automotive (자동차용 소부경화형(BH) 강의 고주기 피로 특성에 미치는 미세 황화물의 영향)

  • Bake hardening steels have to resist strain aging to prevent the yield strength increment and stretcher strain during press process and to enhance the bake hardenability during baking process after painting. The bake hardening steels need to control the solute carbon and the solute nitrogen to improve the bake hardenability. Ti and/or Nb alloying for nitride and carbide precipitation and low carbon content below 0.003% are used to solve strain aging and formability problem for automotive materials. However, in the present study, the effect of micro-precipitation of copper sulfide on the bake hardenability and fatigue properties of extremely low carbon steel has been investigated. The bake hardenability of Cu-alloyed bake hardening (Cu-BH) steel was slightly higher (5 MPa) than that of Nb-alloyed bake hardening (Nb-BH) steel, but the fatigue limit of Cu-BH steel was far higher (45 MPa) than that of Nb-BH steel. All samples showed the ductile fracture behavior and some samples revealed distinct fatigue stages, such as crack initiation, stable crack growth and unstable crack growth.

Corrosion Fatigue Cracking Propagation Characteristics and its Protection for the AL-Alloys of Shipbuilding (선박용 알루미늄 합금재의 부식피로균열 진전특성과 그 억제에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, with the tendency of more lightening, high-strength and high-speed in the marine industries such as marine structures, ships and chemical plants, the use of the aluminium Alloy is rapidly enlarge and there occurs much interest in the study of corrosion fatigue crack characteristics. In this paper, the initiation of surface crack and the propagation characteristics on the base metal and weld zone of 5086-H116 Aluminium Alloy Plate which is one of the Al-Mg serious alloy(A5000serious) used most when building the special vessels, were investigated by the plane bending corrosion fatigue under the environments of marine, air and applying cathodic protection. The effects of various specific resistances on the initiation, propagation behavior of corrosion fatigue crack and corrosion fatigue life in the base metal and heat affected zone were examined and its corrosion sensitivity was quantitatively obtained. The effects of corrosion on the crack depth in relation to the uniform surface crack length were also investigated. Also, the structural, mechanical and electro-chemical characteristics of the metal at the weld zone were inspected to verify the reasons of crack propagation behavior in the corrosion fatigue fracture. In addition, the effect of cathodic protection in the fracture surface of weld zone was examined fractographically by Scanning Electron Microscope(S.E.M.). The main results obtained are as follows; (1) The initial corrosion fatigue crack sensitibity under specific resistance of 25Ω.cm% show 2.22 in the base metal and 19.6 in the HEZ, and the sensitivity decreases as specific resistance increases (2) By removing reinforcement of weldment, the initiation and propagation of corrosion crack in the HAZ are delayed, and corrosion fatigue life increases. (3) As specific resistance decreases, the sensitivity difference of corrosion fatigue life in the base metal and HAZ is more susceptible than that of intial corrosion fatigue crack. (4) Experimental constant, m(Paris' rule) in the marine environment is in the range of about 3.69 to 4.26, and as specific resistance increases, thje magnitude of experimental constant, also increases and the effect by corrosion decreases. (5) Comparing surface crack length with crack depth, the crack depth toward the thickness of specimen in air is more deeply propagated than that in corrosion environment. (6) The propagation particulars of corrosion fatigue crack for HAZ under initial stress intensity factor range of $\Delta$k sub(li) =27.2kgf.mm super(-3/2) and stress ratio of R=0 shows the retardative phenomenon of crack propagation by the plastic deformation at crack tip. (7) Number of stress cycles to corrosion fatigue crack initiation of the base metal and the welding heat affected zone are delayed by the cathodic protection under the natural sea water. The cathodic protection effect for corrosion fatigue crack initiation is eminent when the protection potential is -1100 mV(SCE). (8) When the protection potential E=-1100 mV(SCE), the corrosion fatigue crack propagation of welding heat affected zone is more rapid than that of the case without protection, because of the microfissure caused by welding heat cycle.

  • The fatigue behavior of GFRP composites is affected by environmental parameters. Therefore, we have to study on effect of sea water on fatigue behavior of GFRP composites as to maintain the safety and confidence in design of ocean structure of GFRP. In this paper, we investigated the fatigue properties of chopped strand glass mat/polyester composite in synthetic sea water. (pH 8.2) In case of the glass fiber (CSM type) reinforced polyester composite materials, the fatigue crack in the both dry and wet specimens tested in air or synthetic sea water occurred at the initial of cycle. Thereafter, it was divided with two regions that one decreased with the crack extension and the other increased with the crack extension. The transition point occurred during the crack propagation shifted to high ${\Delta}K$ value as load increase but its point is not changed regardless of immersion or test environment under a constant load. The synthetic sea water degrades the bond strength between fiber and matrix, thereby the tendency of rapid deceleration and acceleration of the crack growth was appeared.

Deformation and Failure Behavior during Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue of a Nickel-Based Single Crystal Superalloy (열기계적 피로에 따른 단결정 니켈기 초내열합금의 변형 및 파괴거동)

  • The out-of-phase thermo-mechanical fatigue (OP TMF) in a <001> oriented single crystal nickel-based superalloy CMSX-4 has been studied. OP TMF life was less than a half of low cycle fatigue(LCF) life in spite of a small hysteresis loop area of OP TMF compared to that of LCF. The failure was caused by the initiation of a crack at the oxide-layered surface followed by its planar growth along the <100> ${\gamma}$ channel in both LCF and OP TMF. However, deformation twins appeared near the major crack of OP TMF. The multiple groups of parallel twin plates on {111} planes provided a preferential path for crack propagation, which caused a significant decrease in OP TMF life. Additionally, the analysis on the surface crack morphology revealed that the tensile strain at the minimum temperature of OP TMF was found to accelerate the crack propagation.

Study on tension-tension fatigue strength properties of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 Plate-to-Plate (수중용접한 국산 SM41A-2강판의 편진반복 인장하중하의 피로강도특성에 관한 연구)

  • Nowadays, the high development of industrial technique demands the optimal design of marine structures to be welded under the water, because the underwater welding of the ship hull and marine structures can decrease manpower and cost of production. However there is not available at present any report on fatigue behavior about underwater welded joints. In this paper under tention- tension repeated fatigue stress with frequency of 10 cycles per second by local controlled system, the fatigue strength properties of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 Plate-to-Plate of 10 mm thickness were experimentally examined. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The fatigue strength of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 was peaked at the heat input of about 1, 400 joule/mm(180 A, 36 V), while, at the heat input of more than about 1, 100 joule/mm (160 A, 33 V) that of the underwater welds at the higher than cycle of life rather than the lower cycle was higher than that of the base metal but lower than that of the atmosphere welds on account of both cooling and notch effects. 2) The fatigue limit of underwater welds increased with an increase of heat input resulting in a peak of that at the heat input of about 1, 400 joule/mm and then decreased gradually. 3) The fatigue strength at N cycles was peaked between the heat input of about 1, 400 and 1, 700 joule/mm where the strain was rapidly increased. 4) It was confirmed that the optimal zone of heat input condition for obtaining the underwater welds fatigue strength higher than that of the base metal exists, and if out of this zone, the fatigue strength of the underwater welds was lower than that of the base metal because of lack weld penetration, inclusion of slag, voids, etc. 5) By the fatigue test, the underwater welds fractured brittly without visual deformation, so the strain was remarkably less than of the atmosphere welds. 6) The fatigue life factor was peaked at the heat input of about 1, 600 joule/mm (200 A, 36 V) at which the mean strain is a little higher than that of the base metal but quite lower than those of the atmosphere welds, resulting in good underwater welds because both fatigue strength and ductility of the underwater welds are higher than those of the base metal at such heat input.

A Study on the Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior in F.F. Shaft Materials of Vehicle with Small Circular Defect at Variable Temperature (미소원공결함을 갖는 자동차 전류구동축재의 온도변화에 따른 피로크랙전파거동에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the rotary bending fatigue test was carried out with two kinds of material, S43C and S50C, using in the Front engine and Front drive wheels(F.F.) of vehicle. The one part of specimens was heated by high frequency induction method(about 1mm depth and $H_RC$ 56~60) and tested environment temperature were $-30^{\circ}C$, $+25^{\circ}C$ and $+80^{\circ}C$ in order to look over the influence of the heat treatment and the temperatures. In the experimented result at $+25^{\circ}C$ and $+80^{\circ}C$, the fatigue life of non-heated specimens were decreased about 35%, but that of heated specimens were decreased about only 5% at $+80^{\circ}C$ more than at $25^{\circ}C$. And in the experiment result at $-30^{\circ}C$ and $+25^{\circ}C$, the non-heated and heated specimens were about 110%, 120% higher fatigue life at $-30^{\circ}C$ than at the $+25^{\circ}C$ each other. On the other hand, the fatigue crack propagation rate of S50C was higher than that of S43C.

  • Under two level block loading, the carbornitrizing specimen can be expected to show different behavior from other uniform material because the properties of surface layer and inner material are different from each other. In this research, the modified Marco-Starkey cumulative theory, which considers load interaction effect, can predict the life of SCM415 carbornitrizing and original notched and smooth specimen, In the low-high test of carbornitrizing specimen which has long life, however, we may additionally consider the increase of life by means of the stress hardening of inner original material.

Low-cycle fatigue behaviors of 316L austenitic stainless steel in high temperature water: Effects of pre-soaking, dissolved oxygen, and boric acid & lithium hydroxide

  • Latest studies found that for 316LN austenitic stainless steel (ASS), its LCF life decreased noticeably in high temperature water containing a great amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) (2 ppm DO), compared with that in the water containing 50 or 100 ppb DO. This finding is different from previous studies about ASSs. This study confirmed that the 316L had similar behavior to 316LN. The LCF life of 316L in water containing 1000 ppb DO water was considerably shorter than that in the water containing 50 ppb DO. Addition of boric acid & lithium hydroxide and pre-soaking did not display noticeable effects on the LCF life of this material in the water with 1000 ppb DO, indicating the discrepancy between the latest studies and previous studies was not caused by the boric acid & lithium hydroxide and pre-soaking. This study also confirmed that similar to 316LN, when a certain amount of DO was added into the water, the amount of hydrogen absorbed into the material decreased significantly compared with that when the DO was less than 5 ppb.

  • Variation of dynamic characteristics of a low pressure turbine blade with crack length is studied in this paper via both experiments and finite element model. Since most of the turbine blades used in domestic power plants are imported from abroad, it is necessary to understand their dynamic behavior in advance. When experimentally obtained natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared with those from FEM results, they are close to each other in their magnitude. Then, it is more feasible to use finite element model for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of a blade under various operation conditions (rotation speed, temperature, etc) as well as with a crack in the blade.
