  • Concrete containing discontinuous discrete steel fiber in a normal concrete is called steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC). Tensile as well as flexural strengths of concrete could be substantially increased by introducing closely spaced fibers which delay the onset of tension cracks and increase the tension strength of cracks. However, many properties of SFRC have not been investigated, especially properties on repeated loadings. Thus, the purposes of this dissertation is to study the flexural fatigue characteristics of SFRC considering cumulative damage. A series of experimental tests such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural fatigue, and two steps stress level fatigue were conducted to clarify the basic properties and fatigue-related properties of SFRC. The main experimental variables were steel fiber fraction (0, 0.4, 0.7, 1, 1.5%), aspect ratio (60, 83). The principal results obtained through this study are as follows: The results of flexural fatigue tests showed that the flexural fatigue life of SFRC is approxmately 65% of ultimate strength, while that of plain is less than 58%. Especially, the behavior of flexural fatigue life shows excellent performance at 1.0% of steel-fiber volume fraction. The cumulative damage test of high-low two stress levels is within the value of 0.6 ∼ 1.1, while that of low-high stress steps is within the value of 2.4 ∼ 4.0.

  • Laser welding by fiber laser accompanied by a lot of spatter and humping bead. This is because the deep and narrow keyhole usually form due to high beam quality. So the weld bead is formed defects, because the plasma jet with a high vapor pressure make the molten pool on keyhole wall scattered. For such a reason, unstable behavior of keyhole is difficult to monitor laser welding by using the laser induced plasma. Mostly, fiber laser welding of thick plates most be influenced by this effect. Therefore, fiber laser welding has been difficult to apply the sole. Thus, laser welding monitoring based on plasma measurements have much difficulty in measurements and analysis of signal. In this study, influence of the plasma emission signal according to welding speed and laser power in fiber laser welding analysed by using RMS and FFT analysis. We can verify that RMS value of the plasma emission signal changes with welding parameters in fiber laser welding, and aspect ratio greater than 1, the peak of FFT frequency had been moved in accordance with welding parameter.

  • Recent developments for high altitude, long endurance conventional UAVs(HALE UAVs) have revealed new issues regarding aircraft structure design and analysis. First of all, due to intensive mission requirements, the structures of HALE UAVs have lightweight and very flexible main wing with high aspect ratio, and slender fuselage. For this kind of structures, aeroelastic characteristics are different from conventional aircrafts. Hence, currently developed analysis methods are not suitable to fully understand strucutral dynamics of the very flexible aircraft, and to guarantee structural reliability. Therefore, various structural studies considering nonlinear behaviors which are generally ignored for the conventional aircraft strucutral analyis have been attracting researchers interests. Nonlinear flutter of the very flexible wing is one of the subject to be studied in combination with strong coupling between aeroelastic characteristics and flight dynamics. Herein, as preliminary study, modeling and nonlinear system analysis of the 2D airfoild with torsional nonlinearity have been discussed.

  • Various technical approaches and concepts have been proposed to develop conductive super-hydrophobic (SH) surfaces. However, most of these approaches are not usable in practical applications because of insufficient adhesion and cost issues. Additionally, durability and uniformity issues are still in need of improvement. The goal of this research is to produce a large-area conductive SH surface with improved adhesion performance and uniformity. To this end, carbon nanotubes (CNT) with a high aspect ratio and elastomeric polymer were utilized as a conductive filler and matrix, respectively, to form a coating layer. Additionally, nanoscale silica particles were utilized for stable implementation of the conductive SH surface. To improve the adhesion properties between the SH coating layer and substrate, pretreatment of the substrate was conducted by utilizing both wet and dry etching processes to create specific organic functional groups on the substrate. Following pretreatment of the surface, a zirco-aluminate coupling agent was utilized to enhance adhesion properties between the substrate and the SH coating layer. Raman spectroscopy revealed that adhesion was greatly improved by the formation of a chemical bond between the substrate and the SH coating layer at an optimal coupling agent concentration. The developed conductive SH coating attained a high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness, which is advantageous in self-cleaning EMI shielding applications.

  • It takes a lot of time and human resources to build a detailed three-dimensional finite element analysis model that is almost similar to the actual structure for sophisticated analysis, and a lot of experience and know-how is required to form a reliable analytical model. In this paper, the one-dimensional beam model connected by stiffness matrix through blade analysis library was compared with the results of three-dimensional analysis with the stress calculated through the process of dimensional restoration analysis based on the principle of virtual work. By comparing the stress calculated through dimensional restoration analysis with the three-dimensional analytical model, We will introduce the development status and application case of the blade analysis library by comparing efficiency and accuracy.

  • The effect of manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions on the machinability of free-cutting steel is based on their morphology, size and distribution. Furthermore, the plasticity of MnS is high during the hot working caused different characterization of MnS. In this study, the deformation behavior of MnS in 1215MS steel after a thermomechanical process was investigated at 1323 K. The microstructures of MnS inclusions were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). As the thickness reduction of the inclusions increased from 10 to 70%, their average aspect ratio increased from 1.20 to 2.39. In addition, the deformability of MnS inclusions was lower than that of the matrix. The possible slip systems of A, B, C, and D plane traces were (${\bar{1}}0{\bar{1}}$)[${\bar{1}}01$], ($10{\bar{1}}$)[101], (011)[$01{\bar{1}}$], and (110)[$1{\bar{1}}0$]. Furthermore, the EBSD measurements suggested that slip planes in MnS inclusions occur on {110} planes.

  • Purine catabolite screening enables reliable diagnosis of certain diseases. In this regard, the development of a facile detection strategy with high sensitivity and selectivity is demanded for point-of-care applications. In this work, the simultaneous detection of uric acid (UA), xanthine (XA), and hypoxanthine (HX) was carried out as model purine catabolites by surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). The detection assay was conducted by employing high-aspect ratio Au nanopillar substrates coupled with in-situ Au electrodeposition on the substrates. The additional modification of the Au nanopillar substrates via electrodeposition was found to be an effective method to encapsulate molecules in solution into nanogaps of growing Au films that increase metal-molecule contact and improve substrate's sensitivity and selectivity. In complex solutions, the approach facilitated ternary identification of UA, XA, and HX down to concentration limits of 4.33 𝜇M, 0.71 𝜇M, and 0.22 𝜇M, respectively, which are comparable to their existing levels in normal human physiology. These results demonstrate that the proposed platform is reliable for practical point-of-care analysis of biofluids where solution matrix effects greatly reduce selectivity and sensitivity for rapid on-site disease diagnosis.

  • For the application of field emission display (FED), it is essential to develop a carbon nanotube (CNT) cathode with high emission current density. In this study, we developed and demonstrated a post-heat treatment (PHT) process to improve field emission properties of CNT cathodes. Since the PHT is intended to burn out organic materials covering the CNTs, the PHT was carried out by heating samples at a high temperature in an atmosphere. The PHT process is applied for samples processed by surface treatment with an adhesive tape. Compared to samples prior to the PHT, samples after the PHT at $360^{\circ}C$ showed about 17% improvement in emission current density. The major reason for the increased current density is mainly the increased aspect ratio of the CNTs because of the removal of the adhesive organic residues covering the CNTs, which were attached on the CNT surfaces during the surface treatment using the adhesive taping method.
