  • In the present study, a solution algorithm for the computation of unsteady flows on unstructured meshes is presented. Dual time stepping is incorporated to achieve the second-order temporal accuracy while reducing errors associated with linearization and factorization. This allows any time step size, which is suitable for considering physical phenomena of interest. The Gauss-Seidel scheme is used to solve the linear system of equations. A special treatment based on spring analogy is made to handle meshes with high aspect-ratio cells. The present method was validated by comparing the results with experimental data and those obtained from rigid motion.

  • Coil guns are known worldwide as inexpensive space launch vehicles. The principle of Fleming's right-hand rule allows the coil gun to accelerate the projectile by applying enormous voltage to the solenoid coil. This study was performed to improve the speed of the coil gun using MATLAB, a commercially available numerical program for high launching force of electromagnetic projectiles. To maximize the speed of the projectile, the largest coil of American wire gauge was used, and the number of windings in the radial and axial directions of the solenoid coil was optimized. Optimal length of the projectile was obtained by calculating the optimal aspect ratio between the axial length of the solenoid coil and the length of the projectile.

  • Microturbine refers to turbines on the scale of centimeters which can transmit power on the order of tens of Watts. Such devices can be used as propulsion or power generation devices for various military systems. An interdisciplinary team at Seoul National University has designed, and fabricated such a device, and this paper describes each phase. A commercial code has been used for design, and MEMS processes have been used for manufacturing. Finally, some preliminary test results are presented.

  • We report on the fabrication and field emission of carbon nanotube field emitters for mass spectrometer. Due to its high aspect ratio and mechanical strength, we use vertically aligned multi-wall carbon nanotubes prepared by thermal chemical vapour deposition as cathodes, Electrons emitted from a CNT are to ionize some sample molecules. We have successfully attained patterned carbon nanotubes grown on two-dimensional 0.7 mm by 0.7 mm Ni square blocks on Si. The emission characteristics show that the field emission initiates at 200 V.

  • A MEMS methanol reformer was fabricated and its performance was evaluated in the present study. Catalytic steam reforming of methanol was selected because the process had been widely applied in macro scale reformers. Conventional Cu/ZnO catalyst that was prepared by co-precipitation method to give the highest coating quality was used. The reactor structure was made by bonding three layers of glass wafers. The internal structure of the wafer was fabricated by the wet-etching process that resulted in a high aspect ratio. The internal surface of the reactor was coated by catalyst and individual wafers were fusion-bonded to form the reactor structure. The internal volume of the microfabricated reactor was $0.3cm^3$ and the reactor produced exhaust gas with hydrogen concentration at 73%. The production rate of hydrogen was 4.16 ml/hr that could generate power of 350 mW in a typical PEM fuel cell.

  • In this paper, a spacer process for FED(Field Emission Display) was developed with the glass to glass anodic bonding technology using Al film as an interlayer and a 3.5 inch monochromatic type FED was fabricated. Holder to dislocate spacers vertically was designed with (110) Si wafer by bulk etching. Spacers, $100\mum\; width\; and\; 1000\mum$ height, were formed on anode panel by spacer to glass anodic bonding and the fabricated FED was operated for emission at 1㎸ anode voltage.

  • In this paper, $Ar^+$ ion laser etching process of single/poly crystalline silicon with $CCl_{2}F_{2}$ gas is studied for MEMS applications. To investigate the effects of process parameters, laser power, gas pressure, scanning speed were varied and multiple scanning was carried out to obtain high aspect ratio. In addition, scanning width was varied to observe the trench profile etched in repeating scanning cycle. From the etching of $2.6{\mu}m$ thick polycrystalline Si deposited on insulator, trench with flat bottom and vertical side wall was obtained and it is possible to apply this results for MEMS applications.

  • Nanotechnology is the fast becoming key technology of the $21^{st}$ century. Due to its fascinating size-dependent properties, it has gained significant important in various sectors. Myths are being formed on the proverbal nanotechnology market, but the reality is the nanotechnology is not a market but a value chain. The chain comprises of - nanomaterials (nanoparticles) and nanointermediates (coatings, compounds, smart fabrics). Elastomer based nanocomposites reinforced with low volume fraction of nanofillers is the first generation nanotechnology products and it has attracted great interest due to their fascinating properties. The incorporation of nanofillers such as nanolayered silicates, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers, metal oxides or silica nanoparticles into elastomers improves significantly their mechanical, thermal, barrier properties, flame retardency etc., Extremely small particle size, high aspect ratio and large interface area yield an excellent improvement of the properties in a wide variety of the materials. Uniform dispersion of the nanofillers is a general prerequisite for achieving desired properties. In this paper, current developments in the area of elastomer based nanocomposites reinforced with layered silicate and carbon nanotube fillers are highlighted.

  • Structural learning methods of MLP classifiers for a given application using genetic algorithms have been studied. In the methods, however, the search space for an optimal structure is increased exponentially for the physical application of high diemension-multi calss. In this paperwe propose a method of MLP classifiers using species genetic algorithm(SGA), a modified GA. In SGA, total search space is divided into several subspaces according to the number of hidden units. Each of the subdivided spaces is called "species". We eliminate low promising species from the evoluationary process in order to reduce the search space. experimental results show that the proposed method is more efficient than the conventional genetic algorithm methods in the aspect of the misclassification ratio, the learning rate, and the structure.structure.

  • A new axisymmetric crack model is proposed on the basis of p-version of the finite element method limited to theory of small scale yielding. To this end, axisymmetric stress element is formulated by integrals of Legendre polynomial which has hierarchical nature and orthogonality relationship. The virtual crack extension method has been adopted to calculate the stress intensity factors for 3-D axisymmetric cracked bodies where the potential energy change as a function of position along the crack front is calculated. The sensitivity with respect to the aspect ratio and Poisson locking has been tested to ascertain the robustness of p-version axisymmetric element. Also, the limit value that is an exact solution obtained by FEM when degree of freedom is infinite can be estimated using the extrapolation equation based on error prediction in energy norm. Numerical examples of thick-walled cylinder, axisymmetric crack in a round bar and internal part-thorough cracked pipes are tested with high precision.
