  • Internet-based computer systems have to provide both high-availability and high-performance. Cluster technology has been used to obtain availability and performance simultaneously Generally, high-availability cluster systems tolerate a failure of a cluster node and cost-effectively solve it. In this paper, we study availability and downtime cost of (n,k) cluster systems. By considering performance, we model state transition of (n,k) cluster systems and apply software rejuvenation technique to improve availability of the system. We find that software rejuvenation can be used to improve availability of (n,k) cluster systems.

  • Although the web is becoming a widely accepted medium, it provides relatively poor performance and low availability. A cluster consists of a collection of interconnected stand-alone computers working together and provides a high-availability solution in application area such as web services or information systems. Web server clusters require a high-availability service with a proactive and practical fault management. However, as the system complexity grows, it is not easy to meet the requirement. Therefore, web server clusters must have self-fault management capability for meeting high-availability requirement. In this paper, we propose high availability web server clusters using self-healing technique with a minimal human intervention. Our experimental results show that a proposed method can be used to improve the availability of web server clusters.

  • As the amount of information to be processed by computers has recently been increased, there has been cluster computing systems developed by connecting PCs and workstations using high-speed networks. hs a result, the studies on a cluster-based DBMS have been done with a wide range and it is necessary to develop a cluster manager for monitoring and managing cluster-based DBMSs. But, a cluster manager for efficiently managing cluster-based DBMSs has been studied in a first step. In this paper, we design and implement a high-availability cluster manager for a cluster-based DBMS. It monitors the status of nodes in cluster systems as well as the status of DBMS instances in a node, by using a graphic user interface (GUI). Our cluster manager supports the high-availability for a cluster-based DBMS by perceiving errors and recovering them, based on the monitored information on the status of a server.

  • As more and more critical commercial applications move on the Internet, providing highly available servers becomes increasingly important. One of the advantages of a clustered system is that it has hardware and software redundancy. High availability can be provided by detecting node or daemon failure and reconfiguring the system appropriately so that the workload can be taken over bi the remaining nodes in the cluster. This paper presents how to provide the guaranteeing high availability of clustering web server. The load balancer becomes a single failure point of the whole system. In order to prevent the failure of the load balancer, we setup a backup server using heartbeat, fake, mon, and checkpointing fault-tolerance method. For high availability of file servers in the cluster, we setup coda file system. Coda is a advanced network fault-tolerance distributed file system.

  • As cluster systems used for high performance computing consist of large number of running servers, one has to solve the low availability problems occurred by the high chance of the server failures. To handle the problems, it is necessary to have the precise definition of available performance of cluster systems that represents availability and performability of the systems simultaneously. Previous research results that mention availability issues lack for concerning system performance such as waiting time and response time in their availability definition. In this paper, we propose a new availability metric for (n, k)-way cluster systems which compose of n primary servers and k backup servers. With the metric, the change of system performance according to arrival rates is captured and the waiting time of a request can be kept below to a certain level. Using various system operating parameters, we calculate availability and downtime of cluster systems along with waiting tine deadline.

  • In this paper, we analyze a technique for building a high-availability (HA) cluster system. We propose what we have termed the 'Selective Replication Manager (SRM),' which improves the throughput performance and reduces the latency of disk devices by means of a Distributed Replicated Block Device (DRBD), which is integrated in the recent Linux Kernel (version 2.6.33 or higher) and that still provides HA and failover capabilities. The proposed technique can be applied to any disk replication and database system with little customization and with a reasonably low performance overhead. We demonstrate that this approach using SRM increases the disk replication speed and reduces latency by 17% and 7%, respectively, as compared to the existing DRBD solution. This approach represents a good effort to increase HA with a minimum amount of risk and cost in terms of commodity hardware.

  • In cluster file systems, the availability of files has been supported by replicating entire files or generating parities on parity servers. However, those methods require very large temporal and spatial cost, and cannot handle massive failures situation on the file system. So we propose HA-PVFS, a cluster file system supporting high data availability adaptive to temporal locality. HA-PVFS restricts replication or parity generation to some important files, for that it employs an efficient algorithm to estimate file access patterns from limited information. Moreover, in order to minimize the performance degradation of the file system, it uses delayed update method and relay replication.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore and examine the relationship between mother-child emotional availability and preschoolers' story stem narrative response. Eighty two 4-year-old preschoolers and their mothers participated in this study. This study used the following translated evaluation tools: Emotional Availability Scales(EA, 3rd edition) designed by Biringen and colleagues(1998) to examine the quality of the emotional relationship between mother and her child, and the MacArthur Story Stem Battery(MSSB) developed by Bretherton and colleagues with the MacArthur Narrative Group(1990) to measure preschoolers' narrative responses. The following statistical analyses were preformed descriptive, cluster analysis, and One-way ANOVA. The findings were as follows: First, 4 clusters of the narrative responses of 4-year-old preschoolers were prosocial story tellers, avoidant/dysregulated story tellers, constrained story tellers, and anxious story tellers. Second, the preschoolers in the prosocial cluster showed a high level of mother-child emotional availability and the preschoolers in the avoidant/dysregulated cluster showed a low level of mother-child emotional availability.

  • With the increase of interests in cluster, there have been a number of research efforts to address the high availability issues on cluster. However, there are no kernel-level group communication systems to support the development of kernel-level application programs and it is not easy to use traditional user-level group communication systems for the kernel-level applications. This paper presents the design and implementation issues of KCGCS(Kernel-level Cluster Group Communication System), which is a kernel-level group communication module for linux cluster. Unlike traditional user-level group communication systems, the KCGCS uses light-weight heartbeat messages and a ring-based heartbeat mechanism, which allows users to implement scalable failure detection mechanisms. Moreover, the KCGCS improves the reliability by using distributed coordinators to maintain membership information.
