To compare the lightning impulse measurement capabilities of high voltage laboratory, a lightning impulse voltage measuring system from HUT is circulated around the world. This paper presents test results after second round of this worldwide exercise. KERI's impulse voltage measuring system compared with the circulating reference measuring system from HUT at voltage levels of 80, 160, 240, 320 and 400 kV. Three impulse shapes were used, i.e. full smooth lightning impulse with both short (0.84 $\sim$ 0.95 ${\mu}s$) and long front (1.45 $\sim$ 1.56 ${\mu}s$), and chopped impulse with time to chopped impuse. Impulse peak value ($U_p$) and time parameters ($T_1$, $T_2$ and $T_c$) according to IEC 60060-1 were compared.
With increasement of use in electricity energy, quality of electric apparatus has been recognized as important factor in distribution and transmission line. Especially In laboratories, lightning and switching impulse performances of electric apparatus have been carrying out by impulse voltage generator (IVG), simulated into lightning and switching surge circuit. In this paper, we describe triggering system of impulse voltage generator(IVG) for extra high voltage, which has been newly designed.
This study investigated the characteristics of fatigue breakdown caused by the impulse voltage of heat treated polyethylene cables through fault currents. This study attempted to obtain the badic data on the insulation design by the repeated load of impulse voltage wave zone (1*40.mu.s) on heat treated polyethylene cables. Besides this study also analysed the data involving their durability by means of the Weibull distribution. An analysis of the breakdown characteristics based upon the repeated load of impulse voltage has revealed that worn out deteriorative breakdown existed at a high voltage near the initial breakdown voltage, and that random breakdown was discovered at a voltage somewhat lower than the initial breakdown voltage. These phenomena were more remarkable especially in the case of the higher temperature treated cables.
Quality of the power system depends upon the reliability of its components such as transformer, transmission lines, insulators, circuit breakers and isolators. The transient voltage due to internal or external reasons may affect the insulation level of the components. The insulation level of these components must be tested against these conditions. Different studies, testing of different electrical components against high voltage impulses and different industrial applications rely on the international manufactures for pulsed power generation and testing, that is quite expensive and large in size. In this paper a model of impulse voltage generator with capacitive load of pin type insulator is studied by simulation method and by an experimental setup. A ten stage high voltage impulse generator (HVIG) is designed and implemented for different applications. In this proposed model, the cost has been reduced by using small and cheap capacitors as an alternative for large and expensive ones while achieving the same effectiveness. Effect of the distributed capacitance in each stage is analyzed to prove the effectiveness of the model. Different values of front and tail resistances have been used to get IEC standard waveforms. Results reveal the effectiveness at reduced cost of the proposed model.

This paper presents the transient impedance in a discharge region when high voltage lightning impulse is applied to small-sized ground electrodes in frozen soil. For a realistic analysis of ionization characteristics near the ground electrode in the soil, ground rod installed outdoors and high voltage impulse voltage generator were used. From the analysis of response voltage and current flowing ground electrode to earth, it was verified that the ionization near the ground electrode contributes to reduction of ground impedance and limits the ground potential rise effectively under high impulse voltage.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of application of the high voltage impulse (HVI) technique to the control of scale formation by calcium carbonate, which is pointed out as an important issue in industrial water treatment. The HVI system consisted of the power supply, high voltage generator, capacitors, switch and impulse generator was designed and made in laboratory scale, which can make 17kV impulse. HVI was introduced to the reactor that was filled with synthetic water containing $Ca^{2+}$ion. The concentration of calcium ion decreased only 3.0% after 5 minutes of contact time. However, it decreased up to 13.7% after 60 minutes of HVI contact time. Temperature and pH increased but conductivity decreased due to precipitation of the calcium carbonate. Although the decrease in concentration of calcium ion was not sufficient, it was verified that the HVI technique could be applicable for the softening and desalting processes.

[ $SF_6$ ]gas, which has an excellent dielectric strength and interruption performance, is used in various applications such as gas insulated switchgear (GIS) in substations. However, since $SF_6$ has a high global warming potential (GWP), it is necessary to find an eco-friendly alternative insulation gas. In order to examine the possibility of using alternative insulation gases for $SF_6$ in power distribution system equipment, the dielectric strength and physical phenomena of dry air in a quasi-uniform electric field are investigated experimentally in this paper. As a result, the breakdown voltages for positive polarity are higher than those for negative polarity under impulse voltage applications. The negative 50[%] flashover voltage, $V_{50}$ of dry air under conditions above 0.4[MPa] gas pressure, is higher than 150[kV], that is the basic impulse insulation level of distribution equipment. The $V_{50}$ increases linearly with increasing the gas pressure, regardless of the waveform and polarity of the applied impulse voltages. The voltage-time curves are dependent on the rise time of the impulse voltage and gas pressure. Furthermore, streamer discharge was observed through light emission images by an ICCD camera under impulse voltage applications.
This paper describes the efficient design, analysis method and experimental verification of capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer system. A capacitor discharge magnetizer system is used to produce a high current impulse of short duration in this magnetizing fixture. The parasitic resistance and parasitic inductance of the capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer system have been estimated using known air-core test coil. Finite element analysis (using MAXWELL 2-D field simulator) and magnetizing circuit analysis (using SPICE) are also used as part of the design and analysis process of the capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer system. Application study for a magnetizing fixture design is shown. 8-pole magnetizing fixture has been designed and analyzed using finite element analysis. The fixture design for 8-pole magnet are presented along with the experimental results. The experimental results have been achieved using a high-voltage, high-energy capacitor discharge impulse magnetizer and 8-pole iron core fixtures (charging voltage : 2000[V], capacitor bank : 4000[$\mu\textrm{F}$]).

Discharge analysis technique for dielectric liquid was presented by using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) under a lightning impulse incorporating two-phase flow phenomena which described gas and liquid phases in discharge space. Until now, the response of step voltage has been extensively explored, but that of lightning impulse voltage was rarely viewed in the literature. We, therefore, developed an analyzing technique for dielectric liquid in a tip-sphere electrode stressed by a high electric field. To capture the bubble phase, the Heaviside function was introduced mathematically and the material functions for the ionization, dissociation, recombination, and attachment were defined in liquid and bubble, respectively. By using this numerical setup, the molecular dissociation and ionization mechanisms were tested under low and high electric fields resulted from the lightning impulse voltage of 1.2/50 ${\mu}s$. To verify our numerical results, the velocity of electric field wave was measured and compared to the previous experimental results which can be viewed in many papers. Those results had good agreement with each other.

This experimental study describes the propagation characteristics and reduction of impulse noises emitted from a high voltage COS(Cut Out Switch) fuse of a transformer. When a high voltage COS fuse becomes a short circuit by the over current. The peak sound Pressure above 150dB(A) is generated. In this study, an impulse noise generator is designed for generating the impulse noises similar to the noise level of COS fuse, which is utilized to test the noise reduction of a reactive silencer. The reactive silencers have been tested for 10 different types with each different porosity, hole diameter and length. From the experimental results, it is found that the reactive silencer has an excellent performance to greatly suppress the impulse noise and that its performance is closely connected with the porosity and hole diameter.
