고온형 고분자전해질연료전지용 MEA 개발 및 응용 (Development and Application of High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells)

  • Proton exchange membrane Fuel Cells(PEMFCs) have been spotlighted because of their broad potential application for potable electrical devices, automobiles and residential usages. However, their utilization is limited to low temperature operation due to the electrolyte dehydration at high temperature. High temperature PEMFC operation offers high CO tolerance and easy water management. This review presents development of high temperature($120{\sim}200^{\circ}C$) PEMFC. Especially, PEMFC which is based on acid-doped PBI membrane is discussed.

Phosphoric Acid-doped SDF-F/poly(VI-co-MPS)/PTFE Membrane for a High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

  • Sulfonated poly(fluorinated arylene ether)s (SDF-F)/poly[(N-vinylimidazole)-co-(3-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane)] (poly(VI-co-MPS))/poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) is prepared for a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The reaction of the membrane with phosphoric acid forms silicate phosphor, as a chemically bound proton carrier, in the membrane. Thus-formed silicate phosphor, nitrogen in the imidazole ring, and physically bound phosphoric acid act as proton carriers in the membrane. The physico-chemical and electrochemical properties of the membrane are investigated by various analytical tools. The phosphoric acid uptake and proton conductivity of the SDF-F/poly(VI-co-MPS)/PTFE membrane are higher than those of SDF-F/PVI/PTFE. The power densities of cells with SDF-F/poly(VI-co-MPS)/PTFE membranes at 0.6 V are 286, 302, and 320 mW $cm^{-2}$ at 150, 170, and 190 $^{\circ}C$, respectively. Overall, the SDFF/poly(VI-co-MPS)/PTFE membrane is one of the candidates for anhydrous HT-PEMFCs with enhanced mechanical strength and improved cell performance.

  • 연료전지는 석유엔진과 비교하여 높은 전류밀도와 효율성, 그리고 친환경적이기 때문에 21세기 들어 대체 발전시스템으로서 각광받아왔다. 연료전지 시스템에서 고분자 전해질 막은 핵심부품으로써 현재 Nafion막이 연료전지시스템에서 사용 중이지만 높은 제조단가와 고온에서 낮은 전도도를 가지는 단점을 가지고 있다. 그러므로 많은 학자들이 낮은 제조단가, 높은 물리적 특성들을 달성하기 위한 연구를 진행하여 왔으며 연료전지의 상용화와 동시에 고성능의 연료전지의 개발을 위하여 많은 방법들이 개발되어 왔다. 그중, 유무기 복합막은 유기물과 무기물의 물성을 균일하게 조합할 수 있으므로 잠재성을 가지고 있는 제조방법이다. 본고에서는 다양한 무기물이 사용되어 제조된 유무기 복합막의 연구동향에 대하여 조사하였다.

  • High temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) has been regarded as a promising clean energy sources. In this study, a quasi-three-dimensional dynamic model of HT-PEMFC has been developed and the local dynamic characteristics are investigated. The model has the geometrical simplification of 2+1D reduction (quasi-3D). The one-dimensional model consists of nine control volumes in cross-sectional direction to solve the energy conservation and the species conservation equations. Then, the one-dimensional model is discretized into 25 local sections along the gas flow direction to account for gas and thermal transport in channels. With this discretization, the local characteristics of HT-PEMFC such as species conservation, temperature, and current density can be captured. In order to study the basic characteristics of HT-PEMFC, it is important to investigate the local dynamic characteristics. Thus, the model is simulated at various operating conditions and the local dynamic characteristics related to them are observed. The model is useful to investigate the distribution of HT-PEMFC characteristics and the physical phenomena in HT-PEMFC.

  • 화학에너지를 전기에너지로 전환하는 친환경 에너지 자원으로 각광받는 연료전지에서 고분자 전해질 연료전지(proton exchange membrane fuel cell, PEMFC)의 비싼 백금촉매 사용, 고온가습조건에서의 전도도 감소 등의 문제로 음이온교환연료전지(anion exchange membrane fuel cell, AEMFC)가 주목을 받고 있다. 음이온교환연료전지는 비백금계 촉매를 사용하고 산소환원반응의 활성화 에너지가 낮아 효율이 더 우수한 장점이 있다. 하지만, 이산화탄소에 노출되어 전극손상, 이온전도도 감소 등의 문제점을 포함하여 여러 가지 해결해야 할 문제점이 있다. 따라서, 본 미니총설은 음이온 교환연료전지의 다양한 문제점을 여러 연구논문을 통해서 해결방안을 제시하고자 한다.

세라믹 멤브레인 활용 직접 에탄올 연료전지 (Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell (DEFC) Fabricated with Ceramic Membrane)

  • Direct ethanol fuel cell has been fabricated with ceramic membrane. A porous silicon carbide (SiC) membrane having approximately 30% porosity has been applied for a direct ethanol proton exchange membrane (DE-PEM) fuel cell. A horizontal type cell having Pt ($18mg/cm^2$) catalyst layer on both side of the ceramic membrane was used for the demonstration test. The ethanol oxidation based-fuel cell stack showed very high voltage (1.289V) and measurable current level (68mA) even though at room temperature.

  • Direct methanol fuel cell based on a proton-exchange membrane electrolyte was investigated. 60% Pt-Ru/C and 60%Pt/C catalysts were employed for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction, respectively. Morphologies of the catalysts were investigated by x-ray power diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and transmission microscopy. Electrochemical characteristics of the catalysts were tested by using cyclic voltametry technique. I-V characteristics of the fuel cell were tested by changing methanol concentration, temperature, and Nafion type as a proton-exchange membrane electrolyte. AC impedance technique was used to investigate the electrochemical performance of the fuel cell. The performance of single cell was enhance with increasing cell temperature. High operation temperature attributed to the combined effects of the reduction of ohmic resistance and polarization. High cell voltage was obtained from the concentration of 205M methanol. With Nafion 112, a current density of $230mA/cm^2$ at 0.55V was obtained from the concentration of 2.5M methanol.

  • The design of a fuel cells stack is important to get optimal output power. This study focuses on the evaluation of fuel cell system for unmaned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Low temperature proton exchange membrane (LTPEM) fuel cells are the most promising energy source for the robot applications because of their unique advantages such as high energy density, cold startup, and quick response during operation. In this paper, a 600 W open cathode LTPEM fuel cell was tested to evaluate the performance and to determine optimal operating conditions. The open cathode design reduces the overall size of the system to meet the requirement for robotic application. The cruise power requirement of 600 W was supported entirely by the fuel cell while the additional power requirements during takeoff was extended using a battery. A peak of power of 900 W is possible for 10 mins with a lithium polymer (LiPo) battery. The system was evaluated under various load cycles as well as start-stop cycles. The system response from no load to full load meets the robot platform requirement. The total weigh of the stack was 2 kg, while the overall system, including the fuel processing system and battery, was 4 kg.

  • 본 연구는 고분자 전해질 연료전지 (PEMFC)의 성능에 매우 중요한 영향을 미치는 물의 분포를 실험적으로 측정하였다. 내부에서 일어나는 활발한 화학반응과 물질전달 특성 때문에 PEMFC 내부에서 수분의 분포가 불균일하며 그 분포를 실험적으로 측정하기가 용이하지 않아 그 동안 간접적인 측정이 많이 이루어졌다. 본 연구에서는 초소형 온습도 센서를 연료전지의 채널에 직접 삽입하고 채널을 따라 흐르는 반응가스의 습도를 측정하였다. 수소극과 공기극 중 한곳만 가습하며, 가습하지 않은 곳에서 습도를 측정하여 멤브레인을 통한 물의 이동을 연구하였다. 가습기의 온도가 증가할수록 양극의 물농도 구배가 커져서 확산이 증가하나 높은 전류밀도에서는 전기삼투항력의 영향이 더욱 커졌다.
