In this study, the interest of female high school students's(N=500) for weight control, as well as nutrient intake status, were analyzed. The mean age, height, and weight of the subjects were, 19.3 years, 162.2 cm and 55.4 kg respectively. Mean BMI was $21.1 kg/m^2$. According to BMI, the percentage of underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese were 18.5 %, 60.3%, 11.3%, and 11.3% respectively. By the BMI criteria, 60.3% of the subjects were normal weight while the rate of self-recognition was 41.5%. The degree of satisfaction regarding self-body image was only 17.1% and 60.9% showed an interest in weight control. The reason for weight reduction were appearance(65.1 %) and health(24.2%). The body areas where subjects wanted to lose weight included the thighs(32.9%) and whole body(29.3%). They believed the most effective weight control strategy was exercise(81.1 %) and the strategies they used were diet(59.1 %) and exercise(40.4%). Energy intake was 1,733.4 kcal which was 86.7% of the estimated energy requirements(EER). Calcium, vitamin $B_2$, and vitamin C intakes were less than EAR by 34.4%, 40.4%, and 59.6% respectively. The intake of dietary fiber was 5.1 g only 21.1 % of the adequate intake(AI). In summary, high school females interested in weight control have significantly less calcium intake than their peers. The correlations between interest in weight control and weight and BMI were significant(p<0.001). The results of this study suggest that to achieve optimal growth, improved diets that include calcium, vitamin $B_2$, and vitamin C are recommended. High school females interested in weight control should especially be targeted for education on calcium intake.
To better understand the prevalence of constipation and related lifestyle factors, the excretion habits, lifestyle, frequency of food intake, food preference, and stress of 1,157 high school students (713 males and 444 females) in the city of Gimhae, Korea were surveyed. The study was part of research aimed at providing basic nutritional data to alleviate or prevent constipation. Most respondents were male (61.6%). Of all the respondents, 55.4% reported that they have been constipated, with females reporting more episodes. Stress, lack of exercise, and bad eating habits were linked to constipation. Students reporting constipation slept less, were more sedate, ate less, and drank less water than non-constipated respondents. Their diet frequently consisted of noodles, sugary food and coffee. The results suggest that students could benefit from nutritional education in lessening the prevalence of constipation.
Purpose: This descriptive study was designed to investigate Body Mass Index(BMI), weight control behavior, and self-esteem in high school adolescents. Method: The convenience sample consisted of 129 high school females and 106 high school males. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire from November to December, 1999. BMI was calculated by using the subject's self-reported body weight and height to identify objective obesity. Self evaluation about subjective obesity was measured by a single item question. Preferred BMI was calculated by using the subject's elf-reported body weight and height which the subjects desired. The Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale was utilized to measure the level of self-esteem. Results: Results of the study revealed that high school females perceived themselves as more more obese than their the actual BMI, excessively participated in dieting behavior and exercises, and reported lower self-esteem than that of males. Conclusion: Based on this study, health care providers need to educate female adolescents about healthy behavior as well as the normal weight range in BMI.
This research was obtained from analyzing how the physiques of the 3rd grade students of high school for males and females and developed for the last eleven years(from 1983 to 1993). By the physiques and nutritional index of physical growth and development, Relative Body Weight of 36.62 exceeded the standard, on the other hand females showed lower records than the standard. Relative Chest Girth Index belonged to the normal type of males and females in all, in the comparison of the records between 1983 and 1993, males increased in average 0.29 and females in average 0.55. Relative Chest Girth Index of females was greater than that of females. By the results of Relative Sitting Height Index, growth of the lower body for males and females was greater than that of males. In case of Vervaeck Index, males increased in average 2.04 but females increased in average 1, 20 relatively less than males. These phenomena provided for the evidence of the deficient nutrition in females. In the regression models of body height and body weight within a certain period, statistical regression model types which best indicated chronological average changes of body height and body weight, took 3rd Order Polynomial Regression Model rather than linear regression model. In females, statistical regression model types which best is suitable for chronological average change of body height and body weight, took 4th and 2nd Order Polynomial Regression Model respectively. The prediction value of 1995 by estimated polynomial regression model anticipated that body height of 3rd grade year students of high school of males in 1993 went on increasing from 170.87cm to 171.79cm in average 0.92cm growth and that of females from 158.99cm to 160.79cm in average 1.80cm growth. In addition, body weight of males seemed to increase from 62.58kg to 64.52kg in average 1.94kg growth and that of females seemed to increase from 54.05kg to 54.19kg in average 0.14kg growth. Linear Regression Model was suitable for the regression model of body weight for body height. Prediction on increase of an average body weight for body height was that, according to growth of body height 1cm in males, body weight increased 1.41kg averagely and that of females 0.86kg. For that reason, we came to conclusion that body weight increase for body height 1cm in males was greater than that in females on average.
The purpose of this study is to examine the associated risk factors for adolescent cigarette smoking. In February 1995, a total of 1793 students from 17 general high schools in Seoul were assessed with a self-completing questionnaire pertaining current smoking status and school.family.peer environmental factors. The results are as follows; 1. The overall proportion of current smoker among students in the study was 17.3%; 27.7% in males and 6.6% in females. 2. There was significant association between smoking status and all school environmental factors (ranks at school, satisfaction at school, study hours after school, extracurricular activity) examined. 3. Siblings smoking in males and family structure in females were significantly associated with the smoking status of students. 4. Functional aspect of family environmental factors, such as APGAR score, parental supervision, attachment to father or to mother were related to smoking status of students. 5. Association with friends who smoke was significantly associated with smoking status of students. 6. In males, association with friends who smoke, ranks at school, siblings smoking were significant positive predictors and APGAR score, parental supervision, attchment to mother were significant negative predictors. In females, association with friends whosmoke, ranks at school, satisfaction at school were significant positive predictors and parental supervision, attchment to father were significant negative predictors. These findings suggest that strategies that influence smoking behavior need to be directed not only to the individual student but also to their peer group, family and school environment.
In order to study the dally metabolism of sodium chloride and of nitrogen, 24-hour urine samples were collected from 1,593 normal Korean females whose ages varied from 2 to 80 years old. The volume, the concentration of chloride and the osmolality of the urine, add the total nitrogen were determined, along with the resting pulse rate and the blood pressure. The daily urine volume was maintained at $1,000{\sim}1,300\;ml/m^2/day$ in all age groups while the chloride concentration and osmolality of the urine samples were approximately 200 mEq/liter and 600 milliosmoles, respectively, in most of age groups. Hence the daily urinary output of sodium chloride was estimated to be approximately $15g/m^2$/day in adult groups. On the other hand, the daily excretion of total nitrogen amouted to approximately $5{\sim}6g/m^2/day$. These findings indicated that the average Korean females live on low-protein and high-salt diets throughout their life. Despite a known correlation between the incidence of hypertension and the high salt intake, none of the subjects employed in this work showed any sign of hypertension.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived stress. self respect & stress response of high school students to provide the basic data for nursing intervention programs in order to manage stress in students. The subject of this study was 279 students (male; 179. female; 100) in high school. Seoul. Korea. during the period from July. 2000. The instruments for this study was a stress management scale developed by Park Young Ae(l996), a self respect scale by Coopersmith (1967) and a physical. emotional response scale to stress by Ro, Jae Hak(1991). The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test. Pearson correlation coefficient. The results of analysis were as follows: 1) Total perceived stress between males & females didn't show a significant difference but subgroups of stress, 'parent' & 'friend' showed significant differences. Male students were experienced in 'parent' stress than females and female students were more experienced in 'friend' stress than males. 2) A significant negative correlation was revealed between perceived stress & self respect. 3) A significant positive correlation was revealed between self respect & stress response. The result of this study lead us to the suggestion that for high school students. the development of stress management methods for improving self respect should be expanded.
Objectives: This study was performed to develop a smoking prevention program for Korean high school students, and to evaluate the effects of the program. Methods: A smoking prevention program, composed of five-session curriculum, was developed by modifying several smoking prevention and cessation programs based on the Social Influence Model. The program was applied to the freshmen of a technical high school. We surveyed with a questionnaire one week before education, one week after education, and two months after education. The number of participants for data analysis were 282(181 males, 101 females). Among those, 162(97 males, 65 females) students were allocated to the education group, and the other 120(84 males, 36 females) students were allocated to the control group. The effect of education was analyzed by multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted by potential confounders. Results: Among smokers, those who had education were more likely to quit smoking (OR=2.99, 95% confidence interval(CI) 0.84-10.64), and to decrease smoking frequency(OR=2.29, 95% CI 0.95-5.53) in borderline significance one week after education. However, the effect of education disappeared two months after education. The effect of education was significant(OR=9.11, 95% CI 3.22-25.76) for the increase of smoking cessation intention one week after education, and it persisted until two months after education(OR=2.94, 95% CI 1.18-7.35). Education was also a significant predictor(OR=1.97, 95% CI 0.89-4.37) for the increase of smoking cessation stage one week after education and it persisted(OR=6.39, 95% CI 2.42-16.86) after two months. Among non-smokers, those who had education were more likely to decrease smoking intention one week after education(OR=4.71, 95% CI 1.63-13.58). However, the statistical significance of education disappeared two months after education. Conclusions: The results showed that the smoking prevention program developed in this study changed smoking behaviors immdeiately after education even though the effect did not persist. However, this program was successful in increasing smoking cessation intention and stage of smoking cessation among smokers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between personality traits and clothing behavior of the normal and disabled females, and to find out the difference in clothing behavior of the two groups. Questionaires for clothing behavior were chosen from the items which had been used in previous studies, and the items were selected on the basis of Cronbach's Alpha Reliability Coefficient. Clothing behavior was composed of four variables: aesthetics; comfort; modesty; and satisfaction. For measurement of 3 personality traits (emotional stability, sociability, and superiority), a portion of 'Personality Inventory' b) Sangro Lee, Changjin Byeon, and Wuigyo Jin was used. Samples were 286 females in Seoul, of whom 110 were normal high school girls, 86 were norma1 college women, 41 were disabled high school girls, and 49 were disabled college women. The data were analyzed using F-test, F-test, and correlation coefficient. The results of the study were the followings: 1. There were meaningful relationships between personality traits and clothing behavior 1) Stability had negative relations to aesthetics and modesty and positive relation to satisfaction. In the case of the normal, stability had no relation to comfort, but in the case of the disabled, it had positive relation to comfort. 2) The sociability had positive relations to aesthetics and satisfaction. 3) The superiority had negative relation to modesty, it had positive relation to satisfaction. The superiority of the normal had negative relation to comfort, whereas the superiority of the disabled had positive relation to comfort. 2. There was a difference in the clothing aesthetics between the normal and the disabled. 3. In case of the normal, college women regarded comfort less important than high school girls. In case of the disabled, college women regarded comfort more important than high school girls. 4. In upper class, there was no difference on the clothing comfort between the normal and the disabled. But there was difference on comfort between the normal and the disabled in low class.
Pre-service teachers' understandings on magnet was investigated through the questionnaire method. The questionnaire was composed of 17 questions about the strength of magnet, the magnetized object and the direction of magnetic field around magnet. In this investigation study, 225 pre-service teachers were selected through random sampling method, who were sophomores in a National University of Education. The formation rate of the scientific conceptions on the strength of magnet was 30.3% and that on the direction of magnetic field around magnet was 53.9%. The average formation rate of scientific conception of all questions on magnet was 44.13%, which doesn't seem to be high as expected. It shows that many of subjects of the questionnaire don't understand fully the concept of moleclar magnet model and the superposition effects of magnetic field around magnet. The formation rate of the scientific conception on magnet of females who took courses in sciences in high school were higher than that of females who took courses in arts in high school, which had meaningful difference (p<.05).
