In order to calssify smog type durnig the summer season in Seoul, air Quality and meterorological data were analyzed by multivariate analysis. Among 15 variables relating to visibility, 10 variables were selected by multiple regression analysis for clustering of smog types; total suspended particle, sulfur dioxide, ozone, ntrogen dioxide, total hydrocarbon, south-north wind component, ralative humidity, precipitable water, mixing height and air temperature. Somg types were grouped into three clusters using cubic clustering criterion and the mumbers of days in each cluster were contained 74, 28 and 16 days. Each cluster was seperated clearly by sulfur dioxide, precipitable water and air teperature. The first cluster was representative of high ozone concentration and prevailing meterological conditions for ozone formation. Therefore, visibility in the first cluster was considered to be affected by photochemical smog. The third cluster showed characteristics of sulphurous smog type due to the higher concentration of primary pollutant, based on the dry condition than that in another cluster. On the other hand, the characteristic of the second cluster was not relatively clear, but considered to be in an intermediate characteristic between photochemical smog and sulphurous smog type.
Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the impact of SST spatial distribution on the result of air quality modeling. Eulerian photochemical dispersion model CAMx (Comprehensive Air quality Model with eXtensions, version 4.50) was applied in this study and meteorological fields were prepared by RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System). Three different meteorological fields, due to different SST spatial distributions were used for air quality modeling to assess the sensitivity of CAMx modeling to the different meteorological input data. The horizontal distributions of surface ozone concentrations were analyzed and compared. In each case, the simulated ozone concentrations were different due to the discrepancies of horizontal SST distributions. The discrepancies of land-sea breeze velocity caused the difference of daytime and nighttime ozone concentrations. The result of statistic analysis also showed differences for each case. Case NG, which used meteorological fields with high resolution SST data was most successfully estimated correlation coefficient, root mean squared error and index of agreement value for ground level ozone concentration. The prediction accuracy was also improved clearly for case NG. In conclusion, the results suggest that SST spatial distribution plays an important role in the results of air quality modeling on high ozone episode at coastal region.
In order to achieve a high efficiency for the silicon solar cell, a passivation characteristic that minimizes the electrical loss at a silicon interface is required. In this paper, we evaluated the applicability of the oxide film formed by ozone for the tunnel silicon oxide film. To this end, we fabricated the silicon oxide film by changing the condition of ozone oxidation and compared the characteristics with the oxide film formed by the existing nitric acid solution. The ozone oxidation was formed in the temperature range of $300{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ at an ozone concentration of 17.5 wt%, and the passivation characteristics were compared. Compared to the silicon oxide film formed by nitric acid oxidation, implied open circuit voltage (iVoc) was improved by ~20 mV in the ozone oxidation and the ozone oxidation after the nitric acid pretreatment was improved by ~30 mV.

The CIT(California Institute of Technology) three-dimensional Eulerian photochemical model was applied to the Greater Seoul Area, Korea for July 24, 1994, a day of the 9-day ozone episode to understand the characteristics of photochemical air pollution problems in the area. The modeling domain was 60km$\times$60km with the girl size of 2km$\times$2km. As the base case emissions, air pollutant emission data of the National Institute of Environmental Research, Korea for the year of 1991 were used with modifications based on EKMA(Empirical Kinetic Modeling Approach) resutls. Comparisons between predicted and observed concentrations showed that the model predicted the peak concentration over the domain reasonably. It was found that the location of the peak ozone concentration was mainly decided by metorological conditions. But the model could not resolve the spatial variations of concentration station by station, which was mainly caused by localized variations in emission and meteorology.
A novel ozonizer has been developed using a high-frequency surface discharge and a high purity alumina ceramic as its dielectric component. A thin ceramic layer, cylindrical in form, is adhered by a film-like induction electrode. An ac exciting voltage of frequency to 0.6 kHz from 1.0 kHz and $6{\sim}9kV$ peak-to-peak is applied between the electrodes to produce a stable high-frequency silent discharge for generation of ozone. A substantial reduction of the exciting voltage is also enabled by using a thin alumina ceramic layer. As a result, the ozonizer can easily produce ozone concentration($128g/m^2$ for oxygen) and power efficiency(360g/kWh for oxygen) without using a special enrichment means.

The atmospheric transportation and dispersion processes of air pollutants are important issues in dealing with air pollution problems. Air pollutants originated from biological and anthropogenic activities are not only limited to the local emission sources, but could also be transported and dispersed to other regions by synoptic weather systems. Besides, the complexity of topography of central Taiwan helps accumulating air pollutants to promote high-concentration episodes. The techniques of tethersonding were applied to monitor the vertical profiles of winds, air temperatures and humidity, as well as to collect air samples, to be analyzed for pollutants $(O_3,\;NO_2,\;NO\;and\; NMHC)$ from the ground up to 1000m. A time period of about one week, 19-26 October 2002, was chosen as the sampling period due to the high frequency of episode occurrence in autumn based on the past records. Associating with the analysis of weather patterns, the atmospheric characteristics over high-concentration areas can be resolved in more detail. The result of the tethersonding studies showed that weak northerly sea breeze (with thickness about 300m) with low wind speed (about 1 to 2 m/sec) could help develop high ozone concentrations in the down-wind areas. It is also important to have a built-up aloft of precursors and ozone to develop high concentration on the previous day.

In this research, recovery of high quality organics from excess activated sludge and its potential as a external carbon sources for BNR process was studied. By simultaneous treatment of alkali and ozone, TSS concentration was reduced by 32%, and RBDCOD fraction was increased by 76.2%, and major constitute of produced organic were acetic acid and propionic acid. Also, nitrogen and phosphorus were greatly solubilized. However, because acid-hydrolyzable phosphorus(AHP) was major part of solubilized phosphorus, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $PO_4{^3}-P$ concentration were insufficient for effective formation of crystal like as MAP(Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate) and hydroxyapatite. By placing BPR reactor before alkali-ozone treatment reactor, $PO_4{^3}-P$ concentration in pretreated sludge was increased by 1.8 times, and improved potential of phosphorus recovery by crystallization. In experiment of crystallization, hydroxyapatite formation was more easily applied than MAP. By hydroxyapatite formation, $SCOD/PO_4-P$ ratio was greatly increased from 32.7 at control to 141.9 at $Ca^{2+}/PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ mole ratio of 2.4. The results based on this study indicated that the proposed system configuration has potential to reduce the excess sludge production, to recover phosphorus in usable forms as well as utilize organics as a external carbon source in BNR process.

Ozone concentration in Tokyo Metropolitan area is one of the most serious issues of the local air quality. Tropospheric ozone is formed by radical reaction including volatile organic compound (VOC) and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$). Reduction of the emission of reactive VOC is a key to reducing ozone concentrations. VOC is emitted from anthropogenic sources and also from vegetation (biogenic VOC or BVOC). BVOC also forms ozone through $NO_x$ and radical reactions. Especially, in urban area, the BVOC is emitted into the atmosphere with high $NO_x$ concentration. Therefore, trees bordering streets and green spaces in urban area may contribute to tropospheric ozone. On the other hand, not all trees emit BVOC which will produce ozone locally. In this study, BVOC emissions have been investigated (terpenoids: isoprene, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes) for 29 tree species. Eleven in the 29 species were tree species that did not emit BVOCs. Three in 12 cultivars for future planting (25 %) were found to emit no terpenoid BVOCs. Eight in 17 commonly planted trees (47%) were found to emit no terpenoid BVOC. Lower-emitting species have many advantages for urban planting. Therefore, further investigation is required to find the species which do not emit terpenoid BVOC. Emission of reactive BVOC should be added into guideline for the urban planting to prevent the creation of sources of ozone. It is desirable that species with no reactive BVOC emission are planted along urban streets and green areas in urban areas, such as Tokyo.
