Vision-based Sensor Fusion of a Remotely Operated Vehicle for Underwater Structure Diagnostication (수중 구조물 진단용 원격 조종 로봇의 자세 제어를 위한 비전 기반 센서 융합)

  • Underwater robots generally show better performances for tasks than humans under certain underwater constraints such as. high pressure, limited light, etc. To properly diagnose in an underwater environment using remotely operated underwater vehicles, it is important to keep autonomously its own position and orientation in order to avoid additional control efforts. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to assist in the operation for the various disturbances of a remotely operated vehicle for the diagnosis of underwater structures. The conventional AHRS-based bearing estimation system did not work well due to incorrect measurements caused by the hard-iron effect when the robot is approaching a ferromagnetic structure. To overcome this drawback, we propose a sensor fusion algorithm with the camera and AHRS for estimating the pose of the ROV. However, the image information in the underwater environment is often unreliable and blurred by turbidity or suspended solids. Thus, we suggest an efficient method for fusing the vision sensor and the AHRS with a criterion which is the amount of blur in the image. To evaluate the amount of blur, we adopt two methods: one is the quantification of high frequency components using the power spectrum density analysis of 2D discrete Fourier transformed image, and the other is identifying the blur parameter based on cepstrum analysis. We evaluate the performance of the robustness of the visual odometry and blur estimation methods according to the change of light and distance. We verify that the blur estimation method based on cepstrum analysis shows a better performance through the experiments.

The Development of Water Quality Monitoring System and its Application Using Satellite Image Data

  • In this study, we was measured the radiance reflectance by using multi-spectral image of low resolution camera(LRC) which will be loaded in the multi-purpose satellite(KOMPSAT) to use the data in analyzing water pollution. Also we investigated the possibility of extraction of water quality factors in rivers and water body by using high resolution remote sensing data such as Airborne MSS. Especially, we tried to extract the environmental factors related with eutrophication, and also tried to develop the process technique and the radiance feature of reflectance related with eutrophication. The results were summarized as follows: First, the spectrum of sun's rays which reaches the surface of the earth was consistent with visible rays bands of 0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$~0.7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and about 50% of total quantity of radiation were there. And at around 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of green spectral band in visible rays bands, the spectrum was highest. Second, as a result of the radiance reflectance Chlorophyll-a represented high spectral reflectance mainly around 0.52${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of green spectral band, and suspended sediments and turbidity represented high spectral reflectance at 0.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and at 0.57${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ each. Third, as a result of the water quality analysis by using Airborne MSS, Chlorophyll-a could have a distribution chart when carried out ratio of B3 and BS to B7. And Band 7 was useful for making the distribution chart of suspended sediments. And when we carried out PCA, suspended sediments and turbidity had distributions at PC 1 , PC 4 each similarly to ground truth data. Above results can be changed according to the change of season and time. Therefore, in order to analyze more exactly the environmental factors of water quality by using LRC data, we need to investigate constantly the ground truth data and the radiance feature of reflectance of water body. Afterward in this study, we will constantly analyze the radiance feature of the surface of water in water body by measuring the on-the-spot radiance reflectance and using low resolution satellite image(SeaWiFs). Besides, we will gather the data of water quality analysis in water body and analyze the pattern of water pollution.

  • Basically, in order to apply solid propellant as ignition source to high energy metal particle combustion system, we analyzed combustion characteristics of the HTPB/AP/Al, HTPE/AP/Al propellants by using a strand burner. The propellants were tested in a high-pressure windowed strand burner, which was pressurized up to 300 psia with pure argon gas. Strand burner was visualized with two quartz windows and ignition was accomplished by a 10 W $CO_2$ laser. The burning rate of propellant was measured with high-speed camera method for frame analysis and photodiode method for combustion time analysis. Emission spectrum was measured with spectrometer at 300 nm ~ 800 nm and 1500 nm ~ 5000 nm and then we analyzed species during propellant combustion.

  • In the ocean engineering field, information about the ocean environment is important for planning, design, and operation, especially the wave information. High precision wave data is also important for considering environmental problems, like efficient operation of ships. For this purpose, many methods were considered in the past. However, an on-board directing wave measurement system has not been incorporated. The use of conventional marine radar Plane Position Indicator (PPI) images allows the estimation of wave information on a real-time basis, using both space and time information, regarding the evolution of ocean surface waves. In order to achieve data acquisition, the Radar Scan Converter (RSC) has been developed. Three-dimensional analysis was performed. The comparison of wave information derived from this system, and that of wave buoy, shows that this wave field detecting system can be a useful tool.

On a Pitch Alteration Method using Scaling the Harmonics Compensated with the Phase for Speech Synthesis (위상 보상된 고조파 스케일링에 의한 음성합성용 피치변경법)

  • In speech processing, the waveform codings are concerned with simply preserving the waveform of signal through a redundancy reduction process. In the case of speech synthesis, the waveform codings with high quality are mainly used to the synthesis by analysis. Because the parameters of this coding are not classified as both excitation and vocal tract, it is difficult to apply the waveform coding to the synthesis by rule. Thus, in order to apply the waveform coding to synthesis by rule, it is necessary to alter the pitches. In this paper, we proposed a new pitch alteration method that can change the pitch period in waveform coding by dividing the speech signals into the vocal tract and excitation parameters. This method is a time-frequency domain method preserving the phase component of the waveform in time domain and the magnitude component in frequency domain. Thus, it is possible that the waveform coding is carried out the synthesis by rule in speech processing. In case of using the algorithm, we can obtain spectrum distortion with $2.94\%$. That is, the spectrum distortion is decreased more $5.06\%$ than that of the pitch alteration method in time domain.

Analysis on the Path Length of M/W Access Link for Mobile Backhaul Design (이동통신 백홀 설계를 위한 M/W 억세스 링크의 경로길이 분석)

  • In order to design M/W(microwave) short backhaul above 10 GHz to meet the increase in mobile traffic demand, the rain attenuation as well as the atmospheric conditions such as Earth bulge and Fresnel zone should be considered. In this paper, the path lengths have been estimated theoretically in various frequency bands using the Korean standard rain rate, and an example of path profile has been analyzed in urban area utilizing spectrum management intelligence system (SMIS). These derived minimum path lengths in various frequency bands are compared to the foreign them, and then will be proposed to improve the Korean minimum path length unitized to 10 km. This paper will provide useful information for microwave engineers in designing a M/W access link, and be utilized to make an efficient usage of high frequency bands for the short mobile broadband backhaul.

  • Hydrogen analysis by elastic recoil detection has been performed utilizing polyimide film as a reference sample of known hydrogen content assuming the soundness of ion beam current integration. However beam current integration at higher incidence angle is not reliable. Scattering yield per unit fluence by current integration which is normalized per unit path length decreases as the sample tilt angle is getting higher. Moreover because beam current integration at high tilt angle is incomplete, hydrogen evaluation is very risky by direct comparison of sequentially collected recoil spectra between reference and target sample. In this study, primary ion beam dose is determined by backscattering spectrum that is collected simultaneously with recoil spectrum instead of ion beam current integration in order to reduce uncertainty arising in the process of current integration and to enhance the reliability of quantitative analysis. Three test samples are selected $-7.6{\mu}m$ polyimide film, hydrogen implanted silicondioxide and Au deposited carbon wafer- and analyzed by two methods and compared.

Study on a 500W Class Wind Turbine using a High Efficiency Composite Blades (고효율 복합재 블레이드를 사용한 500W급 풍력터빈에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the wind energy has been widely used as a renewable energy resource due to lack and environmental issues of the mostly used fossil fuel. This work is to develop a 500W class small wind turbine blade which will be applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea and for the domestic use. For this blade a high efficiency wind turbine blade was designed with the proposing aerodynamic design procedure, and a light and low cost composite structure blade was designed considering fatigue life. Structural analyses including load case study, stress, deformation, buckling and vibration analysis were performed using the Finite Element Method. The fatigue life was estimated using the load spectrum analysis and the Miner rule. In order to evaluate the designed blade, the structural and aerodynamic performance tests were carried out, and the test results were compared with the analysis results.

  • In order to mitigate the problems in storage space and network bandwidth for the full CD quality audio with 44.1 kHz sampling rate, current existing digital audio is always restricted by sampling rate and bandwidth. This kind of restriction normally can be resolved by using low bit rate audio codec such as MP3, OGG, and AAC. However it suffers a major problem such as a loss of high frequency fidelity. This high frequency loss will reproduce only the band-limited low-frequency part of audio in the standard CD-quality audio. In general, the high frequency contents of audio have lots of information such as localization and ambient information, and bright nature of audio. The purpose of this paper is to implement on ARM platform system that can effectively estimate and compensate the missing high frequency contents of MP3 audio. From the experimental results with spectrum analysis and listening test, we confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithms for MP3 audio quality enhancement.

  • LED lighting is spreading on the strength of LED lighting, and various government policies are being implemented. VLC research which is a wireless communication technology using lighting has been actively conducted, and it has been proven through many studies that a general LED light source such as a high-speed data transmitter can be used. But from now on, one of the main problems is the noise from side lights, which can be compared to the noise of radio broadcasts. So in this paper, we proposed a noise canceling model to remove the interference of ambient light by using an optical filter for a detachable VLC channel. In order to verify the proposed model, various high brightness RGB LED modules were used for comparative analysis. In addition, the applicability was verified through experiments using High Luminance LED lighting which is applied in real life.
