  • In this study, the effect of hybrid fiber reinforcement on the residual strength and impact resistance of high-strength cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures was investigated. A cementitious composites was manufactured in which 0.15 vol% of polypropylene fiber (PP) and 1.0 vol% of smooth steel fiber (SSF) were double-mixed, and a residual strength test was conducted while thermal stress was applied by heating test, and then a high-velocity impact test was performed. In the case of general cementitious composites, the rear surface is damaged due to explosion and low tensile strength during high temperature or impact, while hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites can repeatedly absorb and distribute stress until multiple fibers are damaged to suppress the propagation of impact and resistance to explosion. Therefore, this study analyzed the residual strength of cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures depending on whether hybrid fibers were mixed or not, and collected research data on fracture behavior through high-speed impact tests to evaluate impact resistance and mechanical properties.

  • In this paper, when CF/PEEK laminates for high efficiency space structure are subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage), the effects of temperature change on the impact damages(interlaminar separation and transverse crack) of CF/PEEK laminates and the relationship between residual lift and impact damages are experimentally investigated. Composite laminates used in this experiment are CF/PEEK orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interlaces [$0^{\circ}_4/90^{\circ}_8/0^{\circ}_4$]. A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CF/PEEK laminates to generate impact damages. And then CF/PEEK specimens with impact damages are observed by a scanning acoustic microscope under room and high temperatures. In this experimental results, various relations are experimentally observed including the delamination area vs. temperature change, the bending strength vs. impact energy and the residual bending strength vs. impact damage of CF/PEEK laminates.

  • This study was conducted in order to validate the nose shape factors of projectile in existing impact formulas for high-strength concrete in the event of collision with high-speed projectiles. In order to conduct the high-speed impact experiment, specified concrete strengths of 35, 100, and 120 MPa were prepared and tested in collision with both conical and hemispherical projectiles. The results showed that the measured penetration depth did not decrease linearly as concrete strength increased. Comparing the ratio penetration depth to the kinetic energy of the conical and hemispherical projectiles, the difference in the ratios for high strength concrete was observed to decline as concrete strength increased. However, in the modified NDRC and the Hughes formulas, the difference in the predicted penetration depth of the conical and hemispherical projectiles was constant despite increasing concrete strength. The modified NDRC and Hughes formulas should be improved upon so as to be applied to high strength concrete.

  • The purpose of this paper is presented a rational method of predicting dynamic/impact tensile strength of high tensile steel materials widely used fur structural material of automobiles. It is known that the ultimate strength is related with the loading speed and the Lethargy Coefficient from the tensile test. The Dynamic Lethargy Coefficient is proportional to the disorientation of the molecular structure and indicates the magnitude of defects resulting from the probability of breaking the bonds responsible for its strength. The coefficient is obtained from the simple tensile test such as failure time and stresses at fracture. These factors not only affect the static strength but also have a great influence on the dynamic/impact characteristics of the joist and the adjacent structures. This strength is used to analyze the failure life prediction of mechanical system by virtue of its material fracture. The impact tensile test is performed to evaluate the life parameters due to loading speed with the proposed method. Also the evaluation of the dynamic/impact effect on the material tensile strength characteristics is compared with the result of Campbell-Cooper equation to verify the proposed method.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a model for the prediction of residual strength. For this purpose, two-paremeter model based on Caprino's is developed and formulated by the ratio of indentation due to impact and normalized residual strength. The damage zone is considered only as an indentation. Impact tests are carried out on laminated composites by steel balls. Test material is carbon/epoxy laminate. The specimens are composed of $[{\pm}45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_2$ and $[\pm}45^{\circ}]_4$ stacking sequence and have $0.75^T{\times}0.26^W{\times}100^L(mm) dimension. A proposed model shows a good correlation with the experimental results And failure mechanism due to high impact velocity is discussed on CFRP laminates to examine the initiation and development of damage by fractography and ultrasonic image ststem. The effect of the unidirectional ply position on the residual strength is considered here.

  • The response of concrete to transient dynamic loading has received extensive attention for both civil and military applications. Accordingly, thoroughly understanding the response and failure modes of concrete subjected to impact or explosive loading is vital to the protection provided by fortifications. Reactive powder concrete (RPC), as developed by Richard and Cheyrezy (1995) in recent years, is a unique mixture that is cured such that it has an ultra-high compressive strength. In this work, the concrete cylinders with different steel fiber volume fractions were subjected to repeated impact loading by a split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) device. Experimental results indicate that the ability of repeated impact resistance of ultra-high-strength concrete was markedly superior to that of other specimens. Additionally, the rate of damage was decelerated and the energy absorption of ultra-high-strength concrete improved as the steel fiber volume fraction increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of types and amounts of fibers on the compressive strength and tensile behavior high strength fiber-reinforced composites under a static load and impact resistance properties of composites under a high-velocity projectile impact load. Three kinds of mixtures were designed and specimens were manufactured. compressive strength, uniaxial tension, and high velocity projectile impact load tests were performed. Test results showed that the amount of fiber has a greater effect on the tensile strength an d tensile strain capacity than the compressive strength, an d the tensile strain capacity was improved by using hybrid fibers. It was also found that the amount of steel fiber had a great influence on the impact resistance capacity of panels. Although the impact resistance capacity of panels could be improved by using hybrid fibers, the difference of impact resistance capacity between specimens was found to be larger than the case of use of single fiber.

  • In this paper, when CF/EPOXY laminates for high efficiency space structure are subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage), the effects of temperature change on the impact damages(inter laminar separation and transverse crack) of CF/EPOXY laminates and the relationship between residual life and impact damages ale experimentally investigated. Composite laminates used in this experiment are CF/EPOXY orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces $[0^{\circ}_6/90^{\circ}_6]S$ and four-interfaces $[0^{\circ}_3/90^{\circ}_6/0^{\circ}_3]S$. CF/EPOXY specimens with impact damages caused by a steel ball launched from the air gun were observed by the scanning acoustic microscope under room and high temperatures. In this experimental results, various relations were experimentally observed including the delamination area vs. temperature change, the bending strength vs. impact energy and the residual bending strength vs. impact damage of CF/EPOXY laminates. And as the temperature of CF/PEEK laminates increases, the delaminaion areas of impact-induced damages decrease linearly. A linear relationship between the impact energy and the delamination areas were observed. As the temperature of CF/PEEK laminates increases, the delamination areas decrease because of higher initial delaminatin damage energy.
