Grounding impedance depends on the frequency of current flowing into a grounding system lightning in particular has a broad frequency spectrum from some tens of Hz to a few MHz. So the grounding impedance related to transient currents such as lightning should be measured. In this paper, the grounding impedances of vertically-driven ground rods of 10, 30 and 48[m] long are measured and analyzed as functions of the frequency of injected current and the feeding point. As a result, the longer the ground rod is, the lower the steady-state ground resistance is. However the grounding impedance of a vertically-driven ground rod at a high frequency is significantly increased. It is not always true that low grounding impedance follows from a low steady-state ground resistance. It is important to evaluate the high frequency performance of grounding systems for protection against lightning.
This paper describes the design and fabrication of high frequency ground impedance measuring system for assessment of grounding system for Lightning protection. The ground impedance measuring system has been designed and fabricated which makes it possible to assess the ground impedance by frequency ranges from 100 Hz to 1 MHz. The effective grounding systems having a very low impedance to electromagnetic disturbance such as lightning surges and noises in microelectronics and high-technology branches are strongly required. In order to analyze the dynamic characteristic of grounding system impedances in lightning and surge protection grounding systems, it is highly desirable to assess the ground impedances as a measure of performance of grounding system in which lightning and switching surge currents with fast rise time and high frequency flow. The measuring system is based on the variable frequency power supply and consists of signal circuit part, main control part, data acquisition and processing unit, and voltage and current probe system. The ground impedance measuring system can be used to assess grounding system during occurrence of lightning.

A design criterion of grounding systems is commonly based on the ground resistance measured with low frequency in Korea. When lightning surges which have high frequency components are injected into the grounding system, the grounding impedance is great]y different from the static grounding resistance. In order to investigate the effect of water resistivity on the high frequency performance of grounding systems, this paper presents the frequency-dependent admittance using water tank simulating the grounding system in different water resistivities. As a result, because of capacitive effect admittances and conductance are increased with increasing frequency in higher water resistivity of greater than 500[${\Omega}{\cdot}m$]. On the other hand, admittances and conductances are decreased with increasing frequency due to inductive effect in lower water resistivity of less than 500[${\Omega}{\cdot}m$]. The phase difference between the current and voltage increases in the range of 200[kHz] to 5[MHz]. Consequently, frequency-dependent performance of grounding systems is closely related to the soil resistivity, it is necessary to consider the effect of grounding system performance on the frequency and soil resistivity.

Grounding impedance depends on the frequency of current flowing into a grounding system. Especially, the lightning gives a broad frequency spectrum from low frequency up to 1 MHz. So the grounding impedance related to high frequency current like lightning should be measured with high frequency source. In this paper, we described the grounding impedances of deeply-driven ground rods of 10 ${\sim}$ 48 m long with respect to the frequency of injected currents and the feed point. For the experiments, we used the wideband power amplifier which can produce sinusoidal voltages with the frequency ranges of DC ${\sim}$ 250 MHz. As a result, the longer the ground rod is, the lower the ground resistance is. However the grounding impedance of deeply-driven ground rod in the range of higher frequency is significantly increased. As a consequence, it is important to evaluate the high frequency performance of grounding systems for lightning protection.

When surges and electromagnetic pulses from lightning or power conversion devices are considered, it is desirable to evaluate grounding system performance as grounding impedance. In the case of large-sized grounding electrodes or long counterpoises, the grounding impedance is increased with increasing the frequency of injected current. The grounding impedance is increased by the inductance of grounding electrodes. This paper presents the measured results of frequency-dependent grounding impedance and impedance phase as a function of the length of counterpoises. In order to analyze the frequency-dependent grounding impedance of the counterpoises, the frequency-dependent current dissipation rates were measured and simulated by the distributed parameter circuit model reflecting the frequency-dependent relative resistivity and permittivity of soil. As a result, the ground current dissipation rate is proportional to the soil resistivity near the counterpoises in a low frequency. On the other hand, the ground current dissipation near the injection point is increased as the frequency of injected current increases. Since the high frequency ground current cannot reach the far end of long counterpoise, the grounding impedance of long counterpoise approaches that of the short one in the high frequency. The results obtained from this work could be applied in design of grounding systems.

This paper presents the characteristics of transient and effective impulse impedances for deeply driven grounding electrodes used in soil with high resistivity or in downtown areas. The laboratory test associated with the time domain performance of grounding piles subjected to a lightning stroke current has been carried out using an actual-sized model grounding system. The ground impedances of the deeply driven ground rods and grounding pile under impulse currents showed inductive characteristics, and the effective impulse ground impedance owing to the inductive component is higher than the power frequency ground impedance. Both power frequency ground impedance and effective impulse ground impedance decrease upon increasing the length of the model grounding electrodes. Furthermore, the effective impulse ground impedances of the deeply driven grounding electrodes are significantly amplified in impulse currents with a rapid rise time. The reduction of the power frequency ground impedance is decisive to improve the impulse impedance characteristics of grounding systems.

In order to evaluate the performance of a grounding system against lightning or fault currents including high frequency components, the grounding impedance should be considered rather than its ground resistance. Recently, some researches on the evaluation and modeling of the grounding impedances have been carried out but the results have not been yet sufficient. This paper deals with the frequency dependence of the resistivity and relative dielectric constant of sand associated with water contents. As a result, the resistivity of sand is getting lower with increasing water content and it is nearly independent on the frequency in the range of less than 1MHz, and is decreased over the frequency range of above 1MHz. Also, the relative dielectric constant is rapidly decreased with the frequency in the range of less than 10kHz, but it is nearly not dependent on the frequency over the frequency range of 10kHz. It was found from this work that the frequency dependance of resistivity and relative dielectric constant of soil should be considered in designing the grounding systems for protection against lightning or surges.
Generally, grounding systems are responsible for the safe operation of a power system. Their performance guarantees equipment protection and personnel safety under condition of the limited ground potential rise and touch voltages as well as step voltages under ground fault conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the ground resistance frequently for checking the performance of grounding system, In this paper the ground resistance measuring system using digital signal processor and high-performance L-C resonant band pass filter is presented. The signal current magnitude for measuring ground resistance in this system is $10^{-1}[A]\;to\;5\times10^{-2}[A]$ and the current frequency is 30[Hz].

In order to evaluate the performance of a grounding system against lightning or fault currents including high frequency components, the grounding impedance should be considered rather than the steady state ground resistance. To evaluate the ground impedance, the frequency dependence of resistivity and relative dielectric constant of the soil have to be analyzed. This paper deals with the frequency dependence of the resistivity and relative dielectric constant of three types of soil on water content. As a result, the resistivity of soil is getting lower with increasing of water content. It is nearly independent of the frequency in the range less than 1[MHz], and is decreased over the frequency range above 1[MHz]. On the other hand, the relative dielectric constant is rapidly decreased with the frequency in the range less than 1[MHz], but it is nearly independent on the frequency over the range of 1[MHz]. It was found from the experiments that the frequency-dependant resistivity and relative dielectric constant of soil should be considered when designing the grounding systems for protection from lightning or switching surges.
