  • Recently, video data has attracted many interest. That is the reason why efficient indexing schemes are required to support the content-based retrieval of video data. But most indexing schemes are not suitable for indexing a high-dimensional data except Hybrid Spill-Tree. In this paper, we propose an efficient high-dimensional indexing scheme to support the content-based retrieval of video data. For this, we extend Hybrid Spill-Tree by using a newly designed clustering technique and by adopting a signature method. Finally, we show that proposed signature-based high dimensional indexing scheme achieves better retrieval performance than existing M-Tree and Hybrid Spill-Tree.

  • High efficient steam turbine stage has been developed with the help of the 3-dimensional design tool. In this stage design, the compound leaned stacking method has been adopted to reduce the secondary flow loss of a turbine passage and to increase the performance efficiency for the turbine nozzles. And the turbine buckets have been designed with the quasi-3-dimensional turbomachinery blade design method. To verify the stage design, therefore, the 3-dimensional numerical simulation of a steam turbine stage was conducted. In this design, CFX-TASCflow was employed to predict the turbulent flow of a steam turbine stage. The analysis was performed in parallel calculation using the HP N4000 8 CPUs machine. The result showed CFX-TASCflow could be used as the 3-dimensional flow analysis tool of steam turbine design.

  • Different from the conventional motor, the superconducting motor has so large air-gap that the actual parameters such as excitation voltage have considerable difference from the values obtained from 2-dimensional electromagnetic analysis. This paper introduces 3-dimensional EMCH(Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network) method or FLUX-3D FEM(Finite Element Method) software to reduce the error originated from the 2-dimensional electromagnetic analysis for the development of a 1 MW class high-temperature superconducting motor.

  • On the contrary of a conventional motor with very narrow air-gap. it is difficult to calculate the accurate magnetic field distribution and the performance of an air-cored superconducting motor by 2 dimensional analysis. which does not use high permeability material except outer machine shield. This paper aims to do analysis of magnetic field and force distribution from the 3 dimensional modelling of a 1MW class superconducting synchronous motor. Especially. the field coil composed of Bi-2223 high-temperature superconductor and the outer machine shield are modelled by finite element analysis software according to their structures and the self-inductance and Lorentz force are calculated based on the 3 dimensional magnetic field calculation. Moreover. the influence of an important parameter, synchronous reactance, has been analyzed on the machine performances such as voltage variation and output power.

  • Many applications require the clustering of large amounts of high dimensional data. Most automated clustering techniques have been developed but they do not work effectively and/or efficiently on high dimensional (numerical) data, which is due to the so-called “curse of dimensionality”. Moreover, the high dimensional data often contain a significant amount of noise, which causes additional ineffectiveness of algorithms. Therefore, it is necessary to look over the structure and various characteristics of high dimensional data and to develop algorithm that support clustering adapted to applications of the high dimensional database. In this paper, we investigate and classify the existing high dimensional clustering methods by analyzing the strength and weakness of each method for specific applications and comparing them. Especially, in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, we compare the traditional algorithms with CLIP which are developed by us. This study will contribute to develop more advanced algorithms than the current algorithms.

  • In genetic association studies with high-dimensional genomic data, multiple group testing procedures are often required in order to identify disease/trait-related genes or genetic regions, where multiple genetic sites or variants are located within the same gene or genetic region. However, statistical testing procedures based on an individual test suffer from multiple testing issues such as the control of family-wise error rate and dependent tests. Moreover, detecting only a few of genes associated with a phenotype outcome among tens of thousands of genes is of main interest in genetic association studies. In this reason regularization procedures, where a phenotype outcome regresses on all genomic markers and then regression coefficients are estimated based on a penalized likelihood, have been considered as a good alternative approach to analysis of high-dimensional genomic data. But, selection performance of regularization procedures has been rarely compared with that of statistical group testing procedures. In this article, we performed extensive simulation studies where commonly used group testing procedures such as principal component analysis, Hotelling's $T^2$ test, and permutation test are compared with group lasso (least absolute selection and shrinkage operator) in terms of true positive selection. Also, we applied all methods considered in simulation studies to identify genes associated with ovarian cancer from over 20,000 genetic sites generated from Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation27K Beadchip. We found a big discrepancy of selected genes between multiple group testing procedures and group lasso.

  • It has been known that one-dimensional rod theory is very effective as a simplified analytical approach to large scale or complicated structures such as high-rise buildings, in preliminary design stages. It replaces an original structure by a one-dimensional rod which has an equivalent stiffness in terms of global properties. If the structure is composed of distinct constituents of different stiffness such as coupled walls with opening, structural behavior is significantly governed by the local variation of stiffness. This paper proposes an extended version of the rod theory which accounts for the two-dimensional local variation of structural stiffness; viz, variation in the transverse direction as well as longitudinal stiffness distribution. The governing equation for the two-dimensional rod theory is formulated from Hamilton's principle by making use of a displacement function which satisfies continuity conditions across the boundary between the distinct structural components in the transverse direction. Validity of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparison with numerical results of computational tools in the cases of static, free vibration and forced vibration problems for various structures.

  • With consideration of the ongoing construction of high-rise buildings, it is becoming increasingly important to be able to accurately predict the behavior of them on the stage of design, construction and service. Even though many researchers have developed the analysis method to predict the behavior of high-rise buildings, their studies were based on the two dimensional frame structures composed of line elements such as beams and columns. Recently the high-rise buildings with flat-plate system is widely used because of its advantages. In this study a three dimensional analysis method is developed to analyze the behavior of the high-rise buildings with flat-plate system since it is difficult to model the structural systems reasonably with the existing two dimensional analysis method. The analysis method considered the construction sequence including the temporary work such as installation of form, removal of form, installation of shore, and removal of shore. Line elements were used to describe columns, beams, and shores and plate elements were used to model slabs. The creep and drying shrinkage of concrete were also considered to account for the inelastic behavior of concrete.

  • High-quality one-dimensional GaN nanorods and nanowires were synthesized on Ni-coated c-plan sapphire substrate using halide vapor-phase epitaxy (HVPE). Their structure and optical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence techniques. Full substrate coverage of densely packed, uniform, straight and aligned one-dimensional GaN nanowires with a diameter of 80nm were grown at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction patterns, transmission electron microscopic image, and selective area electron diffraction patterns indicate that the one-dimensional GaN nanostructures are a pure single crystalline and preferentially oriented in the [001] direction. We observed high optical quality of GaN nanowires by photoluminescence analysis.

  • Two dimensional analysis on the triangular fin for both the insulated fin tip and non-insulated fin tip and one dimensional analysis on that when the temperature of the fin tip is finite are made. The effect of the fin tip is shown by comparing the heat loss from the fin and the temperature along the fin length varing the non-dimensional fin length and Biot number for each three cases. The results are following. When the non-dimensional fin length is very short, the relative error of the heat loss from the fin with insulated fin tip to that from the fin with non-insulated fin tip is very high. The value of the temperature variation along the non-dimensional fin length is minimum for the finite fin tip temperature using one dimensional analysis and is maximum for the insulated fin tip using two dimensional anaysis.
