  • A numerical study was performed to investigate the flow field and the heat transfer characteristics occurring in high power density welding which is important in many fields of engineering applications. A two dimensional quasi-steady state of keyhole welding model is simulated by using the finite volume methods. It is shown that the shape of isothermal line is elliptic and the temperature gradient is very steep compared with other welding method and the welding speed has on welding width and observed beam power.

  • The high operation frequency mainly reduces transformer volume in the power supply. A high frequency and high voltage pulse transformer is designed, fabricated, and tested. Switching frequency of the transformer is 100 kHz. Input and output voltages of the transformer are 250 V and 4 kV, respectively. Normal operation power of the transformer is 3 kW. Maximum volume of the transformer is 400 $cm^3$. The power density is thus 7.5 W/$cm^3$. The transformer will be installed in a metal box that has nominal operation temperature of 85 degree centigrade. The transformer and other high voltage components in the box will be molded with Silicon RTV(Room Temperature Vulcaniza) that has a very low thermal conductivity. Procedure of design and test results are discussed. Analytical as well as experimental results of varous paramters such as transformer loss, leakage inductance, distributed capacitance are also discussed. In addition, thermal analysis results from ANSYS code for three different operation conditions are discussed.

  • This paper describes the open frame type high power density switching converter. It is based on active clamp forward converter with synchronous rectifier, and packaged by using the open frame and multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) techniques to achieve the high power density. Furthermore, windings of transformer and inductor are also realized by multi-layer PCB so that it achieves the higher power density. Through the experiment on the proto-type converter of 50[W], it is confirmed that power density of $50[W/in^3]$ and maximum efficiency of over 91 [%] are obtained.

  • A new low cost high power density photovoltaic power conditioning system (PV PCS) with an energy storage system is proposed in this paper. Its high power density and cost effectiveness can be achieved through the unification of the maximum power point tracker and the battery charger/discharger. Despite the reduced power stage, the proposed system can achieve the same performance in terms of maximum power point tracking and battery charging/discharging as the conventional system. When a utility power failure happens, the proposed system cannot perform maximum power point tracking at the UPS mode. However, the predetermined battery voltage near the maximum power point of the PV array can effectively generate a reasonable PV power even at the UPS mode. Therefore, it features a simpler structure, less mass, lower cost, and fewer devices. Finally, to confirm the operation, validity, and features of the proposed system, a theoretical analysis and experimental results from a single phase AC 220Vrms/1.5kW prototype are presented.

  • In the battery system, an isolated converter is used for the stability of the system when controlling the charge and discharge of the battery. A fixed frequency LLC converter which is a type of isolated converter, has the advantage of high efficiency and power density with zero voltage switching at high frequency. Therefore, in this paper, the operation analysis, design and experimental verification of the LLC resonant converter with high efficiency and high power density for the ESS system were conducted.

  • Gallium nitride (GaN) can be used in high-voltage, high-power-density/-power, and high-speed devices owing to its characteristics of wide bandgap, high carrier concentration, and high electron mobility/saturation velocity. In this study, we investigate the technology trends for X-/Ku-band GaN RF power devices and MMIC power amplifiers, focusing on gate-length scaling, channel structure, and power density for GaN RF power devices and output power level and output power density for GaN MMIC power amplifiers. Additionally, we review the technology trends in gallium arsenide (GaAs) RF power devices and MMIC power amplifiers and analyze the technology trends in RF power devices and MMIC power amplifiers based on both GaAs and GaN. Furthermore, we discuss the current direction of national research by examining the national and international technology trends with respect to X-/Ku-band power devices and MMIC power amplifiers.

  • There has been increasing global interest in the environmental pollution problems produced by fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In order to tackle these issues, new renewable energy such as solar, wind, bio gas, fuel cell and pressure retarded osmosis(PRO) have been developed extensively. Among these energy sources, PRO is one of the salinity gradient power generation methods. In PRO, energy is obtained by the osmotic pressure generated from the concentration difference between high and low concentration solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane. The development for high power density PRO membranes is imperative with the purpose of commercialization. This study investigates development of thin film composite PRO membrane and spiral wound module for high power density. Also, the influence of membrane backing layer on power density was identified, and the characteristic factors of PRO membranes was determined. Different backing layers were used to improve power density. As expected, the PRO membrane with more porous backing layer showed higher power density.

  • The conventional three-phase rectifier with bulky LC output filter has been widely used in the industry because of its distinctive advantages over the active power factor correction rectifier such as simple circuit, high reliability, and low cost. Over than 0.9 power factor can be achieved, which is acceptable in most of industry applications. This rectifier, however, is not easy to use for high power density applications since the LC filter is bulky and heavy. To solve this problem, a new simple rectifier is presented in this paper. By eliminating the bulky LC filter from the conventional diode rectifier without losing most of the advantages of the conventional rectifier, very high power density power conversion with high power factor can be achieved. Operation principle and design considerations are illustrated and verified by Pspice simulation and experimental results from a prototype of 3.3 kW rectifier followed by 100KHz zero voltage switching full bridge PWM converter

  • A helical inductively coupled plasma asher, which produces low energy and high density plasma, has been built and investigated for photoresist stripping process. Oxygen ion density in the order of $10^{11}/cm^3$ is measured by Langmuir probe, and higher oxygen radical density is observed by Optical Emission Spectrometer. As RF source power is increased, the plasma density and thus photoresist stripping rate are increased. Independent RF bias power to the wafer stage provides a dc bias to the wafer and an ability to add the ion assisted reaction. At 1 KW of the source power, the coupling mechanism of the RF power to the plasma is changed from the inductive mode to the capacitive one at about 1 Torr. This change causes the plasma density and ashing rate decreases abruptly. The critical pressure of the mode change becomes larger with larger RF power.

  • The SuperCritical Water-cooled Reactor (SCWR) pursues high power density to reduce its capital cost. The fast spectrum SCWR, called a super fast reactor, can be designed with a higher power density than thermal spectrum SCWR. The mechanism of increasing the average power density of the super fast reactor is studied theoretically and numerically. Some key parameters affecting the average power density, including fuel pin outer diameter, fuel pitch, power peaking factor, and the fraction of seed assemblies, are analyzed and optimized to achieve a more compact core. Based on those sensitivity analyses, a compact super fast reactor is successfully designed with an average power density of 294.8 W/$cm^3$. The core characteristics are analyzed by using three-dimensional neutronics/thermal-hydraulics coupling method. Numerical results show that all of the design criteria and goals are satisfied.
