The attitude control of an aircraft is usually fulfilled by means of thrusters at high altitudes. Therefore, the possibility of using also aerodynamic surfaces would produce the advantage of reducing the amount of fuel for the thrusters to be loaded on board. For this purpose, Zuppardi already considered some aerodynamic problems linked to the use of a wing flap in a previous paper. A NACA 0010 airfoil with a trailing edge flap of 35% of the chord, in the range of angle of attack 0-40 deg and flap deflections up to 30 deg was investigated. Computer tests were carried out in hypersonic, rarefied flow by a direct simulation Monte Carlo code at the altitudes of 65 and 85 km of Earth Atmosphere. The present work continues this subject, considering the same airfoil and free stream conditions but two flap extensions of 45% and 25% of the chord and two flap deflections of 15 and 30 deg. The main purpose is to compare the influence of the flap dimension with that of the flap deflection. The present analysis is carried out in terms of: 1) percentage variation of the global aerodynamic coefficients with respect to the no-flap configuration, 2) increment of pressure and heat flux on the airfoil lower surface due to the Shock Wave-Shock Wave Interaction (SWSWI) with respect to the same quantities with no SWSWI or in no-flap configuration, 3) flap hinge moment. Issues 2) and 3) are important for the design of the mechanical and thermal protection system and of the flap actuator, respectively. Under the above mentioned test and geometrical conditions, the flap deflection is aerodynamically more effective than the flap extension, because it involves higher variation of the aerodynamic coefficients. However, tests verify that a smaller deflection angle involves the advantage of a smaller increment of pressure and heat flux on the airfoil lower surface, due to SWSWI, as well as a smaller hinge moment.

Air data systems measure airspeed, pressure altitude, angle of attack and angle of sideslip. These measurements are essential for operating flight control laws to ensure safe flights. Since the loss or corruption of air data measurements is considered as catastrophic, a high level of operational reliability needs to be achieved for air data systems. In the case of unmanned air vehicles, failure of any of air data sensors is more critical due to the absence of onboard pilot decision aid. This paper presents design of a dual redundancy air data system and the integration process for an unmanned air vehicle. The proposed dual-redundant architecture is based on two independent air data probes and redundancy management by central processing in two independent flight control computers. Starting from unit testing of single air data sensor, details are provided of system level tests used to meet overall requirements. Test results from system integration demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed process.

Squeal noise is a harsh, high-pitched sound that occurs when railways are running at sharp curve tracks. The cause of squeal noise is known to be the transient lateral traction force between wheel and rail. Field measurements are too difficult to control the parameters. Thus, the scaled test rig should have been made in order to investigate the generating mechanism of squeal noise. The unique feature of our test rig, HSTR(Hongik Squeal Testing Rig), is that DOFs of its wheelset are as close to as those of the real railway. The attack angle and running speed of the rail roller are controlled in real time for simulating a transient characteristic of driving curve. The environment conditions, such as given axle load, running speed, and wheel's yaw angle have been identified for generating squeal noise and the squeal noise itself has been measured. The relation between wheel creepage and creep force in lateral direction and the criteria for squeal noise have been investigated, which results has been verified by finite element method.
The attitude aerodynamic control is an important subject in the design of an aerospace plane. Usually, at high altitudes, this control is fulfilled by thrusters so that the implementation of an aerodynamic control of the vehicle has the advantage of reducing the amount of thrusters fuel to be loaded on board. In the present paper, the efficiency of a wing-flap has been evaluated considering a NACA 0010 airfoil with a trailing edge flap of length equal to 35% of the chord. Computational tests have been carried out in hypersonic, rarefied flow by a direct simulation Monte Carlo code at the altitudes of 65 and 85 km, in the range of angle of attack 0-40 deg. and with flap deflection equal to 0, 15 and 30 deg.. Effects of the flap deflection have been quantified by the variations of the aerodynamic force and of the longitudinal moment. The shock wave-boundary layer interaction and the shock wave-shock wave interaction have been also considered. A possible interaction of the leading edge shock wave and of the shock wave arising from the vertex of the convex corner, produced on the lower surface of the airfoil when the flap is deflected, generates a shock wave whose intensity is stronger than those of the two interacting shock waves. This produces a consistent increment of pressure and heat flux on the lower surface of the flap, where a thermal protection system is required.

The shape of a conventional full spade rudder has been modified to implement the Coanda effect and consequential changes in the flow characteristics are carefully examined to show the significant enhancement in the lift performance. A preliminary numerical study has been done to identify the optimum configuration of the modified rudder sections. For the purpose, chord wise locations of the jet slit and the radii of the trailing edge were varied in several ways and the changes in the lift characteristics have been observed at the various angles of attack, particularly focusing on the usefulness of the Coanda effect upon delaying the stall or increase in the circulation. Making the most use of the results so attained, full spade rudder of a VLCC has been reformed to realize the Coanda effect. A series of model experiments and numerical simulations are performed to confirm the effectiveness of the Coanda effect in improving the performance of the modified rudder. It is found that considerable enhancement in the lift performance of the rudder is plausible at any rudder angle if an optimum jet momentum is provided.

Modem version of supersonic jet fighter aircraft must have been guaranteed appropriate controllability and stability in HAoA(High Angle of Attack). The HAoA flight control law have two parts, one is control law of departure prevention and the other is control law of departure recovery support. The control laws of departure prevention for advanced jet trainer consist of HAoA limiter, roll command limiter and rudder fader. The control laws of departure recovery support are consist of yaw-rate limiter and MPO(Manual Pitch Override) mode. The guideline of pitch rocking using MPO mode is simple, but operating skill of pitch rocking is very difficult by the pilot with inexperience of departure situation. Therefore, automatic deep stall recovery system is necessary. The system called the "Automatic Pitch Rocker System" or APRS, provided a pilot initiated automatic maneuver capable of an aircraft recoveries in situations of deep stall, speed and altitude. This paper addresses the design and validation for APRS to recovery of an deep stall without manual pitch rocking by the pilot. Also, this system is designed to recovery of speed, attitude and altitude after deep stall recovery using ATCS (Automatic Thrust Control System) and autopilot. Finally, this system is verified by real-time pilot evaluation using HQS (Handling Quality Simulator).
Abstract In the present study, the characteristics of kinematics and dynamics in the fluttering motion of free-falling plates are investigated at Reynolds number of $10^5$. We record quasi-two-dimensional trajectories of free-falling plates with and without superhydrophobic coating using high-speed camera, and compute the drag and lift forces by trajectory analysis. Translational and angular velocities are modeled as harmonic functions with specific phase differences. In particular, periodic mass elevations near turning points are explained using the suggested models. At each turning point, a sudden drop in lift and a rapid increase in drag occur simultaneously due to fast increase in angle of attack. However, the lift is increased over the buoyancy-corrected weight of plate during gliding flight, resulting in periodic mass elevations near turning points. Superhydrophobicity is shown to increase lift but to reduce drag on a fluttering plate, resulting in the decrease of mean descent speed.

In order to investigate the noise characteristics of the different caviation, noise measurements were carried out in a large cavitation tunnel of the Samsuug Ship Model Basin(SSMB). The noise measurements for a 3-dimensional hydrofoil were carried out at the angle of attack of $12^{\circ}$ and $16^{\circ}$ according to the decrease in cavitation number. It is exhibited that sound pressure level(SPL) increased sharply with cavitation inception. The frequency of the noise induced by sheet cavitation was higher than that of tip vortex cavitation in the phase of cavitation inception. Within the range of the high frequency, in the case of fully developed cavitation, sheet cavitation noise was significantly increased in sound pressure level compared with tip vortex cavitation noise. In this study, the noise characteristics of the different cavitation types were considered experimentally and would be utilized as a basis for the analysis of propeller cavitation noise.
This paper presents the aerodynamic coefficient modeling with a new model structure explored by Least Squares using Modulating Function Technique (LS/MFT) for an F-16XL airplane using wind tunnel data supplied by NASA/LRC. A new model structure for aerodynamic coefficient was proposed, one that considered all possible combination terms of angle of attack ${\alpha}$(t) and ${\alpha}$(t) given number of harmonics K, and was compared with Pearson's model, which has the same number of parameters as the new model. Our new model harmonic results show better agreement with the physical data than Pearson's model. The number of harmonics in the model was extended to 6 and its parameters were estimated by LS/MFT. The model output of lift coefficient with K=6 correspond reasonably well with the physical data. In particular, the estimation performances of four aerodynamic coefficients were greatly improved at high frequency by considering all harmonics included in the input${\alpha}$(t), and by using the new model. In addition, the importance of each parameter in the model was analyzed by parameter reduction errors. Moreover, the estimation of three parameters, i.e., amplitude, phase and frequency, for a pure sinusoid and a finite sum of sinusoids- using LS/MFT is investigated.

Vortex shedding which is the dominant feature of body wakes and of direct relevance to practical engineering problems, has been intensively studied for flows past a circular cylinder. In contrast, vortex shedding from a hydrofoil trailing edge has been studied to much less extent despite numerous practical applications. The physics of the problem is still poorly understood. The present study deals with $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ vortex shedding from a truncated trailing-edge hydrofoil in relatively high Reynolds number flows. The objectives of this paper are twofold. First, we aim to simulate unsteady turbulent flows past a two dimensional hydrofoil through a hybrid particle-mesh method and penalization method. The vortex-in-cell (VIC) method offers a highly efficient particle-mesh algorithm that combines Lagrangian and Eulerian schemes, and the penalization method enables to enforce body boundary conditions by adding a penalty term to the momentum equation. The second purpose is to investigate shedding frequencies of vortices behind a NACA 0009 hydrofoil operating at a zero angle of attack.
