Determination of the Copper Valency and the Oxygen Deficiency in the High Tc Superconductor, $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$

  • The ratio of trivalent to divalent copper has been determined by the redox titration for two superconducting phases of $YBa_2Cu^{3+}_{2x}Cu^{2+}_{3-2x}O_{6.5+x}$ with the onset temp. of 60K (x = 0.23 ${\pm}$ 0.01) and 90K (x = 0.35 ${\pm}$ 0.02), and for the insulating one (x ${\cong}$ 0) which was kept in an ambient atmosphere for 72 hrs. It is found that $T_c$, and the ratio of $Cu^{3+}/Cu^{2+}$ depend strongly on the annealing temperature and time. A typical orthorhombic phase can easily be obtained by a slow cooling or stepwise cooling at $PO_2$ = 1 atm, and shows a high Tc (ca. 90K) superconductivity.

Characteristics of Plasma Sprayed BSCCO Superconductor Coatings with Annealing Time After Partial Melt Process (BSCCO 플라즈마 용사피막의 부분용융열처리 후 어닐링 시간에 따른 초전도 특성)

  • $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x$(Bi-2212) and $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y$(Bi-2223) high-Tc superconductors(HTS) have been manufactured by plasma spraying, partial melt process(PMP) and annealing treatment(AT). A Bi-2212/2223 HTS coating layer was synthesized through the peritectic reaction between a 0212 oxide coating layer and 2001 oxide coating layer by the PMP-AT process. The 2212 HTS layer consists of whiskers grown in the diffusion direction. The Bi-2223 phase and secondary phase in the Bi-2212 layer were observed. The secondary phase was distributed uniformly over the whole layer. As annealing time goes on, the Bi-2212 phase decreases with mis-orientation and irregular shape, but the Bi-2223 phase increases because a new Bi-2223 phase is formed inside the pre-existing Bi-2212 crystals, and because of the nucleation of a Bi-2223 phase at the edge of Bi-2212 crystals by diffusion of Ca and Cu-O bilayers. In this study the spray coated layer showed superconducting transitions with an onset Tc of about both 115 K, and 50 K. There were two steps. Step 1 at 115 K is due to the diamagnetism of the Bi-2223 phase and step 2 at 50 K is due to the diamagnetism of the Bi-2212 phase.

  • The main issues for the power application of High Tc superconducting tape are lower AC loss and higher stability conditions. HTS tape has large stability margin by high heat capacity of superconductor itself and high temperature margin. But, it can be damaged by continuous heat generation at quench point, because normal zone propagation velocity by generating heat is very low. Here, we analyze the quench propagation characteristics using finite element method for BSCCO-2223 HTS tape.

  • The temperature dependent Josephson critical current $J_c(T)/J_c(0)$ between high $T_c$ superconductors along the a-axis is theoretically studied. The interface influence on the wave functions of quasi-particles is included in the theory within the framework of the two-dimensional t-J model. It is found that the experimental results can be satisfactorily explained by the present model with d wave pairing symmetry.

  • The high Tc superconductor of YBCO system with the nominal composition of precursor was prepared from mixed powders of $Y_2O_3$, $BaCO_3$, CuO and $TiO_2$ by the thermal pyrolysis method. The effect of $TiO_2$ doping to Y based ceramics superconductors fabricated by the thermal pyrolysis reaction, to investigate the effect of the dopant on the superconductivity. The voltage appearing across the field-cooled HTS sample increased with external magnetic field. The improvement of critical current property as well as the mechanical property is important for the application. The improvement of the critical current can be achieved by forming the nano size defect working as a flux pining center inside the superconductor. We simply added $TiO_2$ to starting materials to dope $TiO_2$ and observed an increase in the trapped field and the critical current density up to at least 5 wt % $TiO_2$. The $TiO_2$ was converted to fine $BaTiO_3$ particles which were trapped in YBCO matrix during the sintering process. We observed a peak effect of Jc that can be attributed to $TiO_2$ doping and results suggest that introducing a proper amount of pinning centers can significantly enhance current density.

  • In this study, the structural phase transition and decomposition of superconducting ceramic, Y-Ba-Cu-O system was studied. The results of the study are as follows. The high Tc superconductor $Y_2Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ is made in solid state reaction of $O_2$ atmosphere and the valve of X in $Y_2Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ is 0.1~0.2. The transition temperature of tetragonal-orthorhombic phase of $Y_2Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ appear at $790^{\circ}C-900^{\circ}C$. In the result of measuring the electrical resistance of sample annealed in $O_2$ atmosphere, the electrical resistance show zero at 92 K and the best superconductor, $Y_2Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(Y 123) can be mabe.

Miniaturized Development of Microwave Power Divider Using High-Tc Superconductors (고온초전도체를 이용한 마이크로파 전력분배기의 소형화 개발)

  • In this paper, We report the miniaturization of superconducting microwave power dividers based on lumped element equivalent circuits. To do this, we analyzed a conventional branch-type power divider by using an ABCD matrix under even and odd mode excitation. Then, we calculated each lumped element impedance throughout this analysis of a transmission line matrix. Also we simulated our equivalent circuits made of lumped elements by using a full wave analysis, em Sonnet. Our deign of microwave power divider based on simulated results was fabricated on high-$T_c$ superconducting thin films deposited on MgO substrate. Experimental results were reported in terms of bandwidth, center frequency, and phase difference between $S_{21}$ and $S_{31}$. We confirm that our design will be useful in the future microwave power systum.

  • We demonstrate small-scale high-T$_c$ superconductor RSFQ(Rapid Single Flux Quantum) circuits using multilayer bicrystal technology. An RSFQ balanced comparator is demonstrated with good current resolution, and its operating conditions are discussed in some detail. A single-loop delta-sigma modulator is realized adding a feedback loop to the comparator. The effect of the feedback is confirmed by dc measurement and simulation. A design of an RSFQ toggle flip-flop with the same multilayer bicrystal technology is suggested.

  • Generally, the high Tc superconductor(HTS) doesn't generate any loss in DC condition, but generate considerable loss in AC condition. Until now AC loss in superconductor has been researched on measuring method of short sample by using electrical method and magnetization method. But it is not easy to estimate AC loss in high class magnet system with results of measuring AC Joss in short sample. In this paper, we carry out research on measuring method by using calorimetric method used in measuring AC loss in high class magnet system. We make the inductive and non-inductive superconducting magnet and measure the generated AC loss, then we compare the measured results with the calculated results using Norris equation. This measuring method of AC loss using calorimetric method can measure not only AC loss in superconducting magnet but losses in conducting, radiant and low temperature. Consequently it is thought that efficient design and fabrication of superconducting magnet system will be possible by means of AC loss measurement method using calorimetric method.

Mechanical Characteristics of Bi-2223 Wire for High-Tc Superconducting Cable (고온 초전도 케이블용 Bi-2223 선재의 기계적 특성)

  • Bi-2223 superconductor is known as one of the candidates for practical superconducting wires. Ag-sheathed Bi-2223 superconducting wires were fabricated using the powder-in-tube(PIT) method. When the 19-filaments wire was immersed in liquid nitrogen(77K), maximum critical current density Jc of 62 A/$mm_2$ at 0T was achieved. The critical current density has been shown to depend on the mechanical properties such as tensile stress and bending strain in Ag-sheathed Bi-2223 superconducting wires. The tensile strain for Jc degradation onset was in the range of 0.12~0.3%. In the case of 19-filaments wire, the bending strain is estimated to be smaller than 0.3% for the reasonable Jc value. The observed degradation of the critical current density due to strain effect is inevitable and can be attributed to the formation of microcracks within the superconducting core.
