  • The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) has been the most widely used apparatus to characterize dynamic mechanical behavior of materials at high strain rates between $100s^{-1}$ and $10,000s^{-1}$. The SHPB test is based on the wave propagation theory which was developed to give the stress, strain and strain rate in the specimen using the strains measured in the incident and transmission bars. In this study, the SHPB was directly designed and fabricated for the dynamic mechanical properties of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites. In addition, this apparatus was verified for the validity by comparing the strain data obtained through the high speed camera and Digital Image Correlation(DIC) during the high strain rate compression test of the self-reinforced polypropylene composite (SRPP) specimen.

  • Recent publications reported the self-propelled jumping of coalescing dew droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces [1-2]. We further investigated the initial growth, coalescence, and removal by self-propelled ejection of nano and microscopic water droplets on the superhydrophobic surface of lotus leaves under condensing conditions. By using a high-speed digital camera mounted on an optical microscope, we have found: (1) sub-micrometer droplets form and grow on nanoscale waxy hairs; (2) growing droplets coalesce rapidly upon contact, but never jump off the surface unless the diameter of merged droplets exceeds ${\sim}15{\mu}m$; (3) the diameter and direction of jumping droplets are very narrowly distributed, centered at $20-30{\mu}m$ and ${\sim}20$ degrees from the surface normal, respectively. We present a rationale for these observations on the basis of: (a) the hierarchically rough surface structure on nano- and micro-scales; (b) its chemical composition; and (c) the balance among competing forces of cohesion (surface tension), adhesion and gravity.

  • In this study, the mechanisms of binary droplet collision were studied with diesel, ethanol and purified water. The droplet collisions of liquid droplet have been investigated for the same droplet diameter. In order to obtain the digital images of the droplet collision behavior, the experimental equipment was composed of the droplet generating system and the droplet visualization system. The droplets were produced by the vibrating orifice monodisperse generator. The visualization system consisted of a long distance microscope, a light source, and a high speed camera. The outcomes of binary droplet collision can be divided into four regimes, bouncing, coalescence, reflexive separation and stretching separation. The impact angle and the relative velocity of binary droplet are main parameters of collision phenomena, so the transition mechanism of droplet collision can be divided by the impact parameter.

  • In this paper the arc behavior in spiral type vacuum interrupter was analyzed by observing taken photographs from high-speed digital camera(10000frame/second) and current-voltage waveform from oscilloscope. As a result, the influence of twisting angle between contacts on arc behavior could be analyzed by matching and comparing arc voltage and photographs simultaneously.

  • We report an experimental demonstration of $4{\times}4$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless visible light communications (VLC) using a charge-coupled device image sensor receiver instead of a photodiode receiver. An image sensor is a kind of digital camera, which is used in most mobile devices such as smart phones or laptop computers and a promising commercial candidate for a VLC receiver. The transmission distance of the experimental result is over 10 m, enough for most indoor communication applications. We expect that the MIMO VLC technique based on image sensor receivers can be widely used with the development of high-speed image sensors.

  • In this paper, the fire characteristics of circuit breakers for low voltage during switching arcs were analyzed according to the characteristics of combustible materials. Arc dispersion and ignition process were taken by high speed imaging system and digital camera. In this experiment, four resistors were connected as loads. To discover the fire characteristics of circuit breakers by combustible materials, ethanol and cotton were installed as combustibles near contacts respectively. In case of ethanol, fire broke out near the contacts while switch was turned on and turned off. Whereas, in case of cotton, fire broke out near deteriorated contacts while switch was turned off.

  • Automatic product system is gradually increasing according to development of industrial society. On-line measurement makes a important role in view of economic and effective side in industrial product system. Syncronization system is developed to measure screw thread which is rotating. In-process measuring of rotating body have a lot of difficuties even thoufht using various method containing high speed camera. So, now we suggest one of the new method which is not so expansive. In this study, digital value was produced through the image processing algorithm from acquired orignal image. As a result, we have a good agreement between measuring values calculated from image conture and measuring values acquired from profile project by means of experiment, respectively.

  • A novel nondestructive testing (NDT) system, which is able to detect a crack with high speed and high spatial resolution, is urgently required for inspecting small cracks on express train wheels. This paper proposes an improved signal processing circuits, which uses the multiple amplifying circuits and the crack indicating pulse output system of the previous scan-type magnetic camera. Hall sensors are arrayed linearly, and the wheel is rotated with static speed in the vertical direction to sensor array direction. Each Hall voltages are amplified, converted and immediately operated by using, amplifying circuits, analog-to-digital converters and $\mu$-processor, respectively. The operated results, ${\partial}V_H/{\partial}t$, are compared with a standard value, which indicates a crack existence. If the ${\partial}V_H/{\partial}t$ is larger than standard value, the pulse signal is output, and indicates the existence of crack. The effectiveness of the novel method was verified by examine using cracks on the wheel specimen model.

  • We developed a micro UAV based rapid mapping system that provides geospatial information of target areas in a rapid and automatic way. Users can operate the system easily although they are inexperienced in UAV operation and photogrammetric processes. For the aerial data acquisition, we constructed a micro UAV system mounted with a digital camera, a GPS/IMU, and a control board for the sensor integration and synchronization. We also developed a flight planning software and data processing software for the generation of geo-spatial information. The processing software operates automatically with a high speed to perform data quality control, image matching, georeferencing, and orthoimage generation. With the system, we have generated individual ortho-images within 30 minutes from 57 images of 3cm resolution acquired from a target area of $400m{\times}300m$.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of the plasma induced by lap-joint CO$_2$ laser welding of automotive steel sheets, the effects of welding speed, shield gas flow rate, gap size, and laser beam defocus to plasma intensity emitted from keyhole have been investigated. The plasma light is measured by fiber and photodiode. Also, the plasma images were captured by the high speed digital camera in 1000frames/sec in order to correlate the plasma light signal with plasma pattern. From the results, it is observed that the difference of the plasma intensity for between the deep penetration and partial penetration exists from 1.2 to 2 times. The plasma light intensity decreased in case of the deep penetration Is observed due to the exhausting of the plasma gas under the sheet. On the other hand, under the conditions of the deep penetration, the plasma intensity is significantly increased by controling the conditions decreasing the penetration depth. It was specially founded that the effect of 0.3mm gap size at partial penetration condition is approximately similar to deep penetration in 0mm gap. It is concluded that the plasma intensity is able to evaluate the penetration depth in lap-joint welding and appears to offer the most straightforward correlation to the welding process.
