The present article discusses the effect of the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface, number of bridge areas and normal stress on the failure behavior of the planar non-persistent open joints. Totally, 38 models were prepared using plaster and dimensions of $15cm{\times}15cm{\times}15cm$. The bridge area occupied $45cm^2$, $90cm^2$ and $135cm^2$ out of the shear surface. The number of rock bridges increase in fixed area. Two similar samples were prepared on every variation in the rock bridges and tested for direct shear strength under two high and low normal loads. The results indicated that the failure pattern and the failure mechanism is mostly influenced by the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface and normal stress so that the tensile failure mode change to shear failure mode by increasing in the value of introduced parameters. Furthermore, the shear strength and shear stiffness are closely related to the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface, number of bridge areas and normal stress.
In-vitro flow characteristics downstream of a polyurethane artificial heart valve and a Bjork-Shiley Monostrut mechanical valve have been comparatively investigated in pulsatile flow using particle image velocimetry (PIV). With a triggering system and a time-delayed circuit the velocity distributions on the two perpendicular measurement planes downstream of the valves are evaluated at any given instant in conjunction with the opening behaviors of valve leaflets during a cardiac cycle. The regions of stasis and high shear stress can be found simultaneously by examining the entire view of the instantaneous velocity and Reynolds shear stress fields. It is known that high shear stress regions exist at the interface between strong axial jet flows along the wall and vortical flows in the central area distal to the valves. In addition. there are large stagnation or recirculation regions in the vicinity of the valve leaflet, where thrombus formation can be induced by accumulation of blood elements damaged in the high shear stress zones. A correlation between the unsteady flow patterns downstream of the valve and the corresponding opening postures of the polyurethane valve membrane gives useful data necessary for improved design of the frame structure and leaflet geometry of the polyurethane valve.
Welded joint often contains soft or softened regions such as the HAZ of TMCP steel welded with high heat input. In this study, the equivalent yield strength of plate structure containing softened region was predicted by FEM analysis, and its incremental behavior was explained with the results of the analysis. The calculated results of yield strength indicated the following for the plate structures. 1) As the softened region starts to yield, shear stress begins to build up along the boundary between base metal and softened region. This results in multi-axial stress condition which gives restraint on the softened region. 2) Restraint effect has a significant influence on the distribution of the shear stress, the nominal stress, and the strain. 3) The yielding behavior of softened region becomes the same as that of base metal when both ratios of length to width and thickness to width of softened region are larger than 30 and 13 respectively.
For studying of coagulation and sedimentation in estuarine clay, we obtained several flow curves with various concentrations of sea water by using Coutte type rotational rheometer. The initial shear stress on high concentration of sea water was observed big, but after this, its value is decreasing with increasing shear rate. The maximum pick of shear stress is decreasing with the decreasing of concentration of sea water The trend is same totally above for viscosity. The sedimentation times with the concentration of sea water vary in $\infty$ ~ 5 minutes. The zeta potential is changed dramatically between 114 and 118 concentration of sea water. That is consistent with the sedimentation graph. From these results, the phenomena of coagulation and sedimentation can be explained with viscoelastic terms on structual formation among particles by the changes of surface potential affected from contacting sea water to dispersed particles.
In this study, shear fracture specimens are designed using finite element analyses for the characterization of ductile fracture criteria of metal sheets. Many recently suggested ductile fracture criteria require experimental fracture data at the shear stress states in the model parameter identification. However, it is challenging to maintain shear stress states in tension-based specimens from the initial yield to the final fracture, and the loading path can be different for the different materials even with the same shear specimen geometries. To account for this issue, two different shear fracture specimens for low ductility/high ductility metal sheets are designed using the sensitivity tests conducted by finite element simulations. Priorly mechanical properties including the Hosford-Coulomb fracture criterion of the aluminum alloy 7075-T6 and DP590 steel sheets are used in the simulations. The results show that shear stress states are well-maintained until the fracture at the fracture initiation points by optimizing the notch geometries of the shear fracture specimens.
Ballast particles have an irregular shape and are discrete in nature. Due to the discrete nature of ballast, it exhibits complex mechanical behaviour under loading conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) can model the behaviour of discrete particles under a multitude of loading conditions. DEM is used in this paper to simulate a series of three-dimensional direct shear tests in order to investigate the shear behaviour of railway ballast and its interaction at the microscopic level. Particle flow code in three dimension (PFC3D) models the irregular shape of ballast particles as clump particles. To investigate the influence of particle size distribution (PSD), real PSD of Indian railway ballast specification IRS:GE:1:2004, China high-speed rail (HSR) and French rail specifications are generated. PFC3D built-in linear contact model is used to simulate the interaction of ballast particles under various normal stresses, shearing rate and shear box sizes. The results indicate how shear resistance and volumetric changes in ballast assembly are affected by normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and shear box size. In addition to macroscopic behaviour, DEM represents the microscopic behaviour of ballast particles in the form of particle displacement at different stages of the shearing process.
In this study, fatigue properties and crack growth characteristics of a polycarbonate (PC) were examined during cyclic loading at various mean stress (${\sigma}_{amp}$) and stress amplitude (${\sigma}_{mean}$) conditions. Different S vs. N and da/dN vs. ${\Delta}K$ relations were obtained depending on the loading condition. The higher fatigue strength and the higher resistance of crack growth are seen for the PC samples cyclically loaded at the higher mean stress and lower stress amplitude due to the low crack driving force. Non-linear S - N relationship was detected in the examination of the fatigue properties with changing the mean stress. This is attributed to the different crack growth rate (longer fatigue life): the sample loaded at the high mean stress with lower stress amplitude. Even if the higher stress amplitude, the low fatigue properties are obtained for the sample loaded at the higher mean stress. This was due to the accumulated strain energy to the sample, where severe plastic deformation occurs instead of crack growth (plasticity-induced crack closure). Shear bands and discontinuous crack growth band (DGB) are observed clearly on the fracture surfaces of the sample cyclically loaded at the high stress amplitude, where the lower the ${\sigma}_{mean}$, the narrower the shear band and DGB. On the other hand, final fracture occurred instantly immediately after the short crack growth occurs in the PC sample loaded at the high mean with the low ${\sigma}_{amp}$, i.e., tear fracture, in which the shear bands and DGB are not seen clearly.
In order to study the effects of shell contents on the liquefaction resistance of the shelly sand, NGI cyclic simple shear tests were performed for the shelly sands with shell contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% under the effective vertical stress of 50kPa, 100kPa and 150kPa for 40% and 55% of relative density, respectively. Cyclic simple shear test results showed that for the low effective vertical stress, liquefaction resistance increased rapidly with the increase of shell contents in both 40% and 55% relative density. On the other hand, for the high effective vertical stress, the liquefaction resistance increased slightly in 40% relative density whereas the resistance was almost same in 55% relative density. Liquefaction resistance decreased with increasing effective vertical stress for both 40% and 55% relative density. In the same effective vertical stress and shell contents, liquefaction resistance increased with the increase of relative density of sands.
Using a strain-controlled rheometer, the steady shear flow properties of aqueous xanthan gum solutions of different concentrations were measured over a wide range of shear rates. In this article, both the shear rate and concentration dependencies of steady shear flow behavior are reported from the experimentally obtained data. The viscous behavior is quantitatively discussed using a well-known power law type flow equation with a special emphasis on its importance in industrial processing and actual usage. In addition, several inelastic-viscoplastic flow models including a yield stress parameter are employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady shear flow behavior, and then the applicability of these models is also examined in detail. Finally, the elastic nature is explained with a brief comment on its practical significance. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions exhibit a finite magnitude of yield stress. This may come from the fact that a large number of hydrogen bonds in the helix structure result in a stable configuration that can show a resistance to flow. (2) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions show a marked non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior which is well described by a power law flow equation and may be interpreted in terms of the conformational status of the polymer molecules under the influence of shear flow. This rheological feature enhances sensory qualities in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products and guarantees a high degree of mix ability, pumpability, and pourability during their processing and/or actual use. (3) The Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable and have equivalent ability to describe the steady shear flow behavior of concentrated xanthan gum solutions, whereas both the Bingham and Casson models do not give a good applicability. (4) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions exhibit a quite important elastic flow behavior which acts as a significant factor for many industrial applications such as food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing processes.
This paper present the contact stresses, which considers the shear stress at the cam and follower interface in the direct acting type valve train system of a high speed engine. To determine the contact condition, the normal contact forces are calculated by using the lumped mass dynamic modeling. The line contact is considered between the cam and follower interface. The variations of dynamic stresses are presented as a function of camshaft rotational angle. Also the effects of various design parameters are investigated.
