Accurately predicting localized heavy rainfall is challenging without high-resolution mesoscale cloud information in the numerical model's initial field, as precipitation intensity and amount vary significantly across regions. In the Korean Peninsula, the radar observation network covers the entire country, providing high-resolution data on hydrometeors which is suitable for data assimilation (DA). During the pre-processing stage, radar reflectivity is classified into hydrometeors (e.g., rain, snow, graupel) using the background temperature field. The mixing ratio of each hydrometeor is converted and inputted into a numerical model. Moreover, assimilating saturated water vapor mixing ratio and decomposing radar radial velocity into a three-dimensional wind vector improves the atmospheric dynamic field. This study presents radar DA experiments using a numerical prediction model to enhance the wind, water vapor, and hydrometeor mixing ratio information. The impact of radar DA on precipitation prediction is analyzed separately for each radar component. Assimilating radial velocity improves the dynamic field, while assimilating hydrometeor mixing ratio reduces the spin-up period in cloud microphysical processes, simulating initial precipitation growth. Assimilating water vapor mixing ratio further captures a moist atmospheric environment, maintaining continuous growth of hydrometeors, resulting in concentrated heavy rainfall. Overall, the radar DA experiment showed a 32.78% improvement in precipitation forecast accuracy compared to experiments without DA across four cases. Further research in related fields is necessary to improve predictions of mesoscale heavy rainfall in South Korea, mitigating its impact on human life and property.

In this paper, we introduce a sparse recovery algorithm applied to a radar signal model, based on the compressive sensing(CS), for the formulation of the radar signatures, such as high-resolution range profile(HRRP) and ISAR(Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) image. When there exits missing data in observed RCS data samples, we cannot obtain correct high-resolution radar signatures with the traditional IDFT(Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform) method. However, high-resolution radar signatures using the sparse recovery algorithm can be successfully recovered in the presence of data missing and qualities of the recovered radar signatures are nearly comparable to those of radar signatures using a complete RCS data without missing data. Therefore, the results show that the sparse recovery algorithm rather than the DFT method can be suitably applied for the reconstruction of high-resolution radar signatures, although we collect incomplete RCS data due to unwanted interferences or jamming signals.

In this paper, modeling of a high-resolution multi-function radar is proposed to simulate radar performance in a war game simulator, called AddSIM. To incorporate the multi-function radar model into the AddSIM, the modeling must comprise a component-based structure consisting of physics, logics, and information blocks. Therefore, we assign the RF hardware of a RADAR as the physic block, a controller as the logics block, and the RF specifications of the RADAR as the information block. Detailed modeling of the physics and logics blocks are addressed, and data structure is also presented on an engineering level. On a multi-target engaged scenario, the performance of the multi-function radar is numerically analyzed and its validation is examined.

In this study, we assess impact of spatial resolution of radar rainfall and a distributed hydrologic model on parameter estimation and rainfall-runoff response. Radar data measured by S-band polarimetric radar located at Mt. Bisl in the year of 2012 are used for the comparative study. As different rainfall estimates such as R-KDP, R-Z, and R-ZDR show good agreement with ground rainfall, R-KDP are applied for rainfall-runoff modeling due to relatively high accuracy in terms of catchment averaged and gauging point rainfall. GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model) is implemented for flood simulations at the Geumho River catchment with spatial resolutions of 200m, 500m, and 1000m. Automatic calibration is performed by PEST (model independent parameter estimation tool) to find suitable parameters for each spatial resolution. For 200m resolution, multipliers of overlandflow and soil hydraulic conductivity are estimated within stable ranges, while high variations are found from results for 500m and 1000m resolution. No tendency is found in the estimated initial soil moisture. When parameters estimated for different spatial resolution are applied for other resolutions, 200m resolution model shows higher sensitivity compared to 1000m resolution model.
For urban flash flood simulation, we need the higher resolution radar rainfall than radar rainfall of KMA, which has 10 min time and 1km spatial resolution, because the area of subbasins is almost below $1km^2$. Moreover, we have to secure the high quantitative accuracy for considering the urban hydrological model that is sensitive to rainfall input. In this study, we developed the quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), which has 250 m spatial resolution and high accuracy using KMA AWS and SK Planet stations with Mt. Gwangdeok radar data in Seoul area. As the results, the rainfall field using KMA AWS (QPE1) is showed high smoothing effect and the rainfall field using Mt. Gwangdeok radar is lower estimated than other rainfall fields. The rainfall field using KMA AWS and SK Planet (QPE2) and conditional merged rainfall field (QPE4) has high quantitative accuracy. In addition, they have small smoothed area and well displayed the spatial variation of rainfall distribution. In particular, the quantitative accuracy of QPE4 is slightly less than QPE2, but it has been simulated well the non-homogeneity of the spatial distribution of rainfall.

Changes in climate have largely increased concentrated heavy rainfall, which in turn is causing enormous damages to humans and properties. Therefore, the exact relationship and the spatial variability analysis of hydrometeorological elements and characteristic factors is critical elements to reduce the uncertainty in rainfall -runoff model. In this study, radar rainfall grid resolution and grid resolution depending on the topographic factor in rainfall - runoff models were how to respond. In this study, semi-distribution of rainfall-runoff model using the model ModClark of Inje, Gangwon Naerin watershed was used as Gwangdeok RADAR data. The completed ModClark model was calibrated for use DEM of cell size of 30m, 150m, 250m, 350m was chosen for the application, and runoff simulated by the RADAR rainfall data of 500m, 1km, 2km, 5km, 10km from 14 to 17 on July, 2006. According to the resolution of each grid, in order to compare simulation results, the runoff hydrograph has been made and the runoff has also been simulated. As a result, it was highly runoff simulation if the cell size is DEM 30m~150m, RADAR rainfall 500m~2km for peak flow and runoff volume. In the statistical analysis results, if every DEM cell size are 500m and if RADAR rainfall cell size is 30m, relevance of model was higher. Result of sensitivity assessment, high index DEM give effect to result of distributed model. Recently, rainfall -runoff analysis is used lumped model to distributed model. So, this study is expected to make use of the efficiently decision criteria for configurated models.

Recently, World Radio Conference(WRC)-2007 approved the ultrawide bandwidth of 500 MHz for the use of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar in X-band for the EESS(Earth Exploration Satellite Service) in order to improve the SAR imaging resolution. It is concerned about the interference impact from the spaceborne SAR that may cause to most of ground radars due to the extended ultra wideband. In this paper, in order to predict the interference impact of the ground-based radar from the spaceborne radar, radar interference model is presented using radar characteristic parameters by taking into account the operating environments of the spaceborne and ground based radar in the time, space, and spectrum domains. Using the spaceborne SAR model of TerraSAR-X and ground radar model of meteorological radar recommended by ITU-R, the interference impact was assessed through the computer simulation to see the possible interference impact of the ground based radar operating in the Korean peninsula.

Recently, As the frequency of localized heavy rains increases, the use of high-resolution radar data is increasing. The produced radar rainfall has still gaps of spatial and temporal compared to gauge observation rainfall, and in many studies, various statistical techniques are performed for correct rainfall. In this study, the precipitation correction of the S-band Dual Polarization radar in use in the flood forecast was performed using the ConvAE algorithm, one of the Convolutional Neural Network. The ConvAE model was trained based on radar data sets having a 10-min temporal resolution: radar rainfall data, gauge rainfall data for 790minutes(July 2017 in Cheongju flood event). As a result of the validation of corrected radar rainfall were reduced gaps compared to gauge rainfall and the spatial correction was also performed. Therefore, it is judged that the corrected radar rainfall using ConvAE will increase the reliability of the gridded rainfall data used in various physically-based distributed hydrodynamic models.

The fighter pilot uses radar mounted on the fighter to obtain high-resolution SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images for a specific area of distance, and then the pilot visually classifies targets within the image. However, the target configuration captured in the SAR image is relatively small in size, and distortion of that type occurs depending on the depression angle, making it difficult for pilot to classify the type of target. Also, being present with various types of clutters, there should be errors in target classification and pilots should be even worse if tasks such as navigation and situational awareness are carried out simultaneously. In this paper, the concept of operation and functional structure of radar system for fighter jets were presented to transfer the SAR image target classification task of fighter pilots to radar system, and the method of target classification with high accuracy was studied using the CNN ensemble model to archive higher classification accuracy than single CNN model.

A high speed data link capability is one of the critical factors in determining the performance of the spaceborne SAR system with high resolution because of the strict requirement far the real-time data transmission of the massive SAR data in a limited time of mission. In this paper, based on the data lint model characterized by the spaceborne small SAR system, the high rate multi-channel data link module is designed including link storage, link processor, transmitter, and wide-angle antenna. The design results are presented with the performance analysis on the data link budget as well as the multi-mode data rate in association with the SAR imaging mode of operation from high resolution to the wide swath.
