  • A zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) pulse width modulated (PWM) converter is a PWM converter with a single main power switch that has an auxiliary circuit to help it turn on with zero-voltage switching (ZVS). There have been many ZVT-PWM converters proposed in the literature as they are the most popular type of ZVS-PWM converters. In this paper, the properties and characteristics of several types of ZVT-PWM converters are reviewed. A new type of ZVT-PWM converter is then introduced, and the operation of a sample converter of this type is explained and analyzed in detail. A procedure for the design of the converter is presented and demonstrated experimentally. The feasibility of the new converter is confirmed with results obtained from an experimental prototype. Conclusions on the performance of ZVT-PWM converters in general are made based on the efficiency results obtained from the experimental prototypes of various ZVT-PWM converters of different types.

  • The automatic load transfer switch (ALTS) typically automatically transfers electrical loads from a normal electrical power source to an emergency electrical power source upon reduction or loss of normal power source voltage. It can also automatically re-transfer the load to the normal power source when the normal voltage has been restored within acceptable limits. The transfer operation of ALTS is accomplished by a spring-driven linkage mechanism. In this paper we build a dynamic model of driving mechanism for ALTS using ADAMS and checked the characteristics of the transfer operation. Finally we performed a detailed design of the driving mechanism through results of analysis and confirmed it to satisfy design requirements.

  • This paper introduces a new soft switched AC-DC boost converter with power factor correction (PFC). In the introduced converter, all devices are turned on and off under soft switching (SS). The main switch is turned on under zero voltage transition (ZVT) and turned off under zero current transition (ZCT). The main diode is turned on under zero voltage switching (ZVS) and turned off under zero current switching (ZCS). Meanwhile, there is not any current or voltage stress on the main devices. Besides, the auxiliary switch is turned on under ZCS and turned off under ZVS. The detailed theoretical analysis of the converter is presented, and also theoretical analysis is verified by a prototype with 100 kHz and 500 W. Also, the proposed converter has 99.8% power factor and 97.5% total efficiency at soft switching operation.

  • This paper describes the design of a power cell-based pulsed power modulator with fast rise times. The pulse-generating section of the pulse power modulator is a series stack of power cells. Each power cell is composed of a storage capacitor, a pulse switch, and a bypass diode. When the pulse switches are turned on, the capacitors are connected in series and the sum of voltages is applied to the load. For output pulses with fast rise times, an IGBT with fast turn-on characteristics is adopted as a pulse switch and the optimized gate driving method is used. Pspice simulation is performed to account for the gate driving method. A 10 kV, 12-power cell-based pulsed power modulator is tested under resistive load and plasma reactor load. The rise times of output pulses less than 20 ns are confirmed, showing that the pulsed power modulator can be effectively applied to pulsed power applications with fast rise times.

  • A high-performance transmit/receive (T/R) switch is essential for every radio-frequency (RF) device. This paper proposes a T/R switch that is designed in the CEDEC 0.13 μm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology for 2.4 GHz ISM-band RF applications. The switch exhibits a 1 dB insertion loss, a 28.6 dB isolation, and a 35.8 dBm power-handling capacity in the transmit mode; meanwhile, for the 1.8 V/0 V control voltages, a 1.1 dB insertion loss and a 19.4 dB isolation were exhibited with an extremely-low power dissipation of 377.14 μW in the receive mode. Besides, the variations of the insertion loss and the isolation of the switch for a temperature change from - 25℃ to 125℃ are 0.019 dB and 0.095 dB, respectively. To obtain a lucrative performance, an active inductor-based resonant circuit, body floating, a transistor W/L optimization, and an isolated CMOS structure were adopted for the switch design. Further, due to the avoidance of bulky inductors and capacitors, a very small chip size of 0.0207 mm2 that is the lowest-ever reported chip area for this frequency band was achieved.

  • In most power electronic applications, the AC power input provided by the electronic utility needs to first converted to a DC voltage. Such conversion is accomplished by a diode rectifier due to its circuit simplicity and low cost. However, since diode rectifiers have some intrinsic problems such as low power factor and high harmonic distortion, a wide use of such rectifiers may cause noises, malfunction and heat damage in both electrical power systems and electrical machinery systems. This paper proposes soft switched three-phase single switch boost-type converter. The proposed circuit can perform Zero Voltage Switched(ZVS) without using any current and voltage sensors. For this circuit, both simulation and experiments have been performed. The results not only confirmed the ZVS but also indicated that, compared to the conventional hard switched converter, the prosed circuit can improve the efficiency as much as 1.7 to 4.7[%] while keeping the same high power factor and small harmonic distortion in their AC input.

  • This paper proposes an ultra-low power design methodology for asynchronous circuits which combines with power switch structure used for reducing leakage current in the synchronous circuits. Compared to existing delay-insensitive asynchronous circuits such as static NCL and semi-static NCL, the proposed methodology provides the leakage power reduction in the NULL mode due to the high Vth of the power switches and the switching power reduction at the switching moment due to the smaller area even though it has a reasonable speed penalty. Therefore, it will become a low power design methodology required for IoT system design placing more value on power than speed. In this paper, the proposed methodology has been evaluated by a $4{\times}4$ multiplier designed using 0.11 um CMOS technology, and the simulation results have been compared to the conventional asynchronous circuits in terms of circuit delay, area, switching power and leakage power.

  • In order to improve spectral efficiency and reduce power consumption for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted wireless communication systems, a joint design considering irregular RIS topology, RIS on-off switch, power allocation and phase adjustment is investigated in this paper. Firstly, a multi-dimensional variable joint optimization problem is established under multiple constraints, such as the minimum data requirement and power constraints, with the goal of maximizing the system energy efficiency. However, the proposed optimization problem is hard to be resolved due to its property of nonlinear nonconvex integer programming. Then, to tackle this issue, the problem is decomposed into four sub-problems: topology design, phase shift adjustment, power allocation and switch selection. In terms of topology design, Tabu search algorithm is introduced to select the components that play the main role. For RIS switch selection, greedy algorithm is used to turn off the RISs that play the secondary role. Finally, an iterative optimization algorithm with high data-rate and low power consumption is proposed. The simulation results show that the performance of the irregular RIS aided system with topology design and RIS selection is better than that of the fixed topology and the fix number of RISs. In addition, the proposed joint optimization algorithm can effectively improve the data rate and energy efficiency by changing the propagation environment.

  • Nowadays the diversity and large-capacity of electric appliances are strong effect on electrical fires augment in an alarming way. But, as the inactive response characteristics of the existing RCD (Residual Current protective Device) used on low voltage power distribution lines, so control of overload and electric short circuit faults, major causes of electrical fires, are not enough. Therefore this paper is confirmed the unreliability of the existing RCD by electrical faults simulation and is proposed a auxiliary trip device of RCD by using a high precision current sensor (namely, reed switch) for the prevention of electrical disasters in low voltage power distribution lines caused by overload or electric short circuit faults. The sensitive reed switch in the proposed ATD (auxiliary trip device) exactly detects the increased magnetic flux with the overload or the short current caused by a number of electrical faults, and then rapidly cuts off the existing RCD. The proposed auxiliary trip device of RCD is confirmed the excellent characteristics in response velocity and accuracy in comparison with the conventional circuit breaker through various operation performance analysis. The proposed ATD can also prevent electrical disaster, like as electrical fires, which resulted from the malfunction and inactive response characteristics of the existing RCD.
