  • This paper proposes a Truncated Type-II Hybrid ARQ scheme and coding techniques using an adaptive modulation system to achieve high throughput data transmission systems for wireless multimedia communication systems. In this paper, the adaptive modulation system analyzed in Nakagami (m-distribution) fading channel environment. The adaptive modulation system controls the modulation level and symbol rate according to the Nakagami fading parameter(m). When the received Eb/No is high or the Nakagami fading parameter m is high, the propose system selects higher modulation level and higher symbol rate to increase throughput. On the other hand, this system selects lower modulation level and lower symbol rate to prevent throughput performance degradation when the received Eb/No is low. The modulation method have been adopted QPSK(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying), 16QAM(Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), 64QAM, 256QAM. Therefore, adaptive modulation systems with truncated type-II hybrid ARQ scheme is proper for wireless multimedia communication system that require high reliability and delay-limited applications.

  • Previously, we reported induced expression of developmentally regulated CTP-binding protein 2 (DRG2) in fish cells at the late stage of rhabdovirus infection. To investigate the biological role of fish DRG2 (fDRG2), we transfected CHSE-214 cells with an expression vector containing complete fDRG2 fused to the N-terminal end of an enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). Low level expression of fDRG2-EGFP did not induce morphological change or cell death. However, a high level expression of fDRG2-EGFP induced cell rounding and caused depletion of the cell population in FACS analysis. Several truncated fragments were fused to EGFP. FACS analysis was conducted to determine the presence of cells expressing high levels of the resulting chimera. While cells expressing a high level of N-terminus were detected, those expressing high levels of the C-terminal fragment 243-290 containing the G4 motif were absent in FACS analysis. Based on these observations, we propose that overexpression of fDRG2 may induce cell rounding, a representative cytopathic effect of virus-infected cells in the late stage of infection and the C-terminus of the fDRG2 is essential for this function.

  • The inverter is an essential part of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive systems. The performance of an inverter is greatly influenced by its modulation strategy. Using a proper management of modulation strategies can guarantee high performance from a PMSM under various speed conditions. Switching between modulations is a pivotal technique that determines the performance of a PMSM. Most works on hybrid methods focus on two-level induction motors drive systems. In this paper, in order to improve the performance of PMSMs under various speed conditions, a hybrid method of a pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme based on a neutral-point-clamped (NPC) three level topology was proposed. This hybrid PWM modulation comprised space vector PWM (SVPWM) and selective harmonic elimination PWM (SHEPWM). Under low speed conditions, the SVPWM is employed to cause the PMSM to start smoothly, and to obtain a rapid response from the control system. Under high speed conditions, the SHEPWM is employed to reduce the switching frequency and to eliminate particular current harmonics. Moreover, the harmonic characteristics of different modulations are analyzed to obtain a smooth transition between the SHEPWM and the SVPWM. Experimental and simulation results indicated the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • In this paper, we consider a representative integral imaging method in glasses-free 3D image processing and propose a prioritized transmission scheme for guaranteeing a received video quality in error-prone environments. According to the correlation of pixels consisting of each voxel of integral image, we set the priority differently and apply the modulation level according to this priority value. That is to say, the corresponding pixels with small variance are set to a high priority and transmitted by using a low level modulation that is robust under transmission errors, but the corresponding pixels with greater variance are set to a lower priority and transmitted by using a high level modulation that has a high bit error rate but fast transmission rate. Result shows that the proposed scheme that applies the error-robust modulation level to the important image bit stream with the high priority improves the peak to sidelobe ratio (PSR) of the received 3D image, compared with a typical method that use the same modulation level without distinction of priorities.

  • Multilevel converters have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. The efficiency parameters of a multilevel converter such as the switching losses and total harmonic distortion (THD) mainly depend on the modulation strategy used to control the converter. Among all of the modulation techniques, the selective harmonic elimination (SHE) method is particularly suitable for high-power applications due to its low switching frequency and high quality output voltage. This paper proposes a new expression for the SHE problem in five-level converters. Based on this new expression, a simple analytical method is introduced to determine the feasible modulation index intervals and to calculate the exact value of the switching angles. For each selected harmonic, this method presents three-level or five-level waveforms according to the value of the modulation index. Furthermore, a flowchart is proposed for the real-time implementation of this analytical method, which can be performed by a simple processor and without the need of any lookup table. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated with several simulation and experimental results for a single phase five-level diode-clamped inverter.

  • Recently the researches on Modular Multi-level Converter (MMC) are being highlighted because high quality and efficient power transmission are key issues in the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system. This paper proposes an improved pre-charging method for the sub-module capacitors in MMC that operates in Nearest Level Control (NLC) modulation. The proposed method does not require additional circuits or Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques. The feasibility of proposed method was verified through computer simulations for a scaled 3-phase 10kVA MMC with 12 sub-modules per each arm. Hardware experiments with a scaled prototype were performed in the lab to confirm the simulation results.

  • Quadrature amplitude modulation-spread spectrum (QAM-SS) and code division multiplexing (CDM) are multi-level modulation schemes with high performance but they cause a large peak-average power ratio (PAPR). Therefore, this paper proposes a novel modulation scheme for high-rate transmission which follows a sequence of CDM-mapping-CDM not only to correct the above-mentioned problem but also offer a high flexibility in obtaining arbitrary multilevel modulation with very low implementation complexity and high performance.

  • This paper suggests a new modulation strategy for step pulse type multi-level inverter. The proposed strategy is simple to determine the switching angles without regard to increase of levels. Designed to extract the equivalent RMS value compared to ideal sine wave from inverter, it can be applied effectively to high level step pulse inverter. Also this paper proposed modulation strategy for modified H-bridge 13 level inverter which has different cell source voltages with simulation and experiment. The modulation characteristics from simulation and experiment, agreed very well with tracing sine wave about modified structure of cascaded H-bridge multi-level inverter.
