Recently, the HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine has been spotlighted as a next generation engine because it has a good potential for high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. This study was carried out to investigate the in-cylinder flow characteristics generated in a HSDI diesel engine with a 4-valve type cylinder head. The four kinds of cylinder head were manufactured to elucidate the effect of intake port geometry on the in-cylinder flow characteristics. The steady flow characteristics such as coefficient of flow rate $(C_{f})$, swirl ratio (Rs), and mass flow rate (m,) were measured by the steady flow test rig and the unsteady flow velocity within a cylinder was measured by PIV. In addition, the in-cylinder flow patterns were visualized by the visualization experiment and these results were compared with simulation results calculated by the commercial CFD code. The steady flow test results indicated that the mass flow rate of the cylinder head with a short distance between the two intake ports is $13\%$ more than that of the other head. However, the non-dimensional swirl ratio is decreased by approximately $15\%$. As a result of in-cylinder flow characteristics obtained by PIV and CFD calculation, we found that the swirl center was eccentric from the cylinder center and the position of swirl center was changed with crank angle. As the piston moves to near the TDC, the swirl center corresponded to the cylinder center and the velocity distribution became uniform. In addition, the results of the calculation are in good agreement with the experimental results.
Passenger safety is one of the most important considerations in the purchase of an automobile. A curtain-type air bag is increasingly adapted in deluxe cars for protecting passengers from the danger of side clash. Inflator housing is a main part of the curtain-type air bag system for supplying high-pressure gases to pump up the air bag-curtain. Although the inflator housing is fundamental in designing a curtain-type air bag system, flow information on the inflator housing is very limited. In this study, we measured instantaneous velocity fields of a high-speed flow ejecting from the inflator housing using a dynamic PIV system. From the velocity field data measured at a high frame-rate, we evaluated the variation of the mass flow rate with time. From the instantaneous velocity fields of flow ejecting from the airbag inflator housing in the initial stage, we can see a flow pattern of broken shock wave front and its downward propagation. The flow ejecting from the inflator housing was found to have large velocity fluctuations and the maximum velocity was about 700m/s. The velocity of high-speed flow was decreased rapidly and the duration of high-speed flow over 400m/s was maintained only to 30ms. After 100ms, there was no perceptible flow.
A numerical investigation is conducted to search for the optimal flow rate for a rotating-disk chemical vapor decomposition reactor operating at a high temperature and a low pressure. The flow of a gas mixture supplied into the reactor is modeled by a laminar flow of an ideal gas obeying the kinetic theory. The axisymmetric two-dimensional flow in the reactor is simulated by employing a CFD package FLUENT. With operating pressure and temperature fixed, numerical computations are performed by varying rotation rate and flow rate. Examination of the structures of flow and thermal fields leads to a flow regime diagram illustrating that there are a stable plug-like flow regime and a few unfavorable flow regimes induced by mass unbalance or buoyancy. The criterion for sustaining a plug-like flow regime is discussed based on a theoretical scaling argument. Interpretation of the flow regime map suggests that a favorable flow is attainable with a minimum flow rate at the smallest rotation rate guaranteeing the dominance of rotation effects over buoyancy.

A cross-flow fan is widely used on many industrial fields: mining industry, automobile and home appliances, etc. The design point of the cross-flow fan is generally based on the region within low static pressure and high flow rate. It relatively makes high dynamic pressure at low speed because a working fluid passes through an impeller blade twice. However, it has low static pressure efficiency between 30% and 40% because of relative high impact loss. Recently, in the air-conditioning systems, the operating behaviors at the off-design points are highly regarded to broaden the application area for various air-cooling loads. Especially, at the lower flow rate, there exists a rapid pressure head reduction, a noise increase and an irregular flow field against a rearguider as a scroll of centrifugal fan. Numerical analyses are carried out for investigating the flow characteristics in a cross-flow fan including the impeller, the rearguider and the stabilizer. Especially, various types of rearguiders are estimated by numerical and experimental methods to insure the stable operation in the region of lower flow rate. Numerical domains are discretized by hexahedral cells. Three-dimensional, unsteady governing equations are solved using FVM, PISO algorithm, sliding grid system and standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. ASHRAE standard fan tester is also used to estimate the performance of the modeled crossflow fan.
The investigation into a full-scale 27 m high, by 6 m wide, thermosyphon loop. The simulation model is based on a one-dimensional axially-symmetrical control volume approach, where the loop is divided into a series of discreet control volumes. The three conservation equations, namely, mass, momentum and energy, were applied to these control volumes and solved with an explicit numerical method. The flow is assumed to be quasi-static, implying that the mass-flow rate changes over time. However, at any instant in time the mass-flow rate is constant around the loop. The boussinesq approximation was invoked, and a reasonable correlation between the experimental and theoretical results was obtained. Experimental results are presented and the flow regimes of the working fluid inside the loop identified. The results indicate that a series of such thermosyphon loops can be used as a cavity cooling system and that the one-dimensional theoretical model can predict the internal temperature and mass-flow rate of the thermosyphon loop.

An experiment is conducted to investigate the effect of air and water mass flow rates on cooling characteristics of mist impinging jet on a flat plate. The air mass flow rate ranges from 0.0 to 3.0 g/s, and water mass flow rates from 5.0 to 20.0 g/s. An air-atomizing nozzle is used fur the purpose of controlling air and water mass flow rates. The test section is designed distinctively from previous works to obtain local heat transfer coefficient distributions. Heat transfer characteristics of the mist impinging jet are explained with the aid of flow visualization. Surface temperature and heat transfer coefficient distributions become more uniform as air mass flow rate increases. The water flow rate provides substantial contribution to enhancement of cooling performance. On the other hand, The air mass flow rate weakly influences the averaged heat transfer rate when the water mass flow rate is low, but the averaged heat transfer rate Increases remarkably with the air mass flow rate in case of the high water mass flow rate.
For testing large-capacity pumps, the accurate flow rate measurement is needed in the test loop. As a measuring method of flow rate, venturi tube is recommended due to its low pressure loss. However, upstream disturbance of loop component such as a valve has an effect upon the accuracy of flow rate measurement. For controlling flow rate in case of high flow rate and large-scale piping system, a butterfly-type valve is generally used due to its compactness. However, a butterfly valve disturbs downstream flow by generating turbulence, cavities, or abrupt pressure change. In this study, the effect of downstream disturbance of butterfly valve on the flow rate measurement using a venturi tube is investigated. Test loop consists of circulation pump, reservoir, butterfly valve, venturi tube, and reference flow meter. The test is conducted with regard to a different valve opening angle of butterfly valve. According to the valve opening angle, the uncertainty of flow rate measurement is investigated.

This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flow through single opening and partitioned opening. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with a small opening on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. Flow measurements are made with the opening, for partition ratios H_p/H$_1$$ in the range 0 to 1. where H_p$ and H$_1$ are partition length and height of the opening. respectively. In the case of H_p/H$_1$$ of 0, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are unseparated (bidirectional), and the two flows interfere within the opening. The unseparated flow increases strength of flow resistance and therefore, the exchange flow rate is minimum through range of the partition ratios. Two flow zones, i.e., separated (unidirectional) flow zone and unseparated (bidirectional) flow zone, exist with increasing the partition length. The exchange flow rate increases with increasing the separated flow zone. It is found that a maximum exchange flow rate exists at H_p/H$_1$$ of 1. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates by changing the partition ratio, the fluids Interference in the unseparated zone is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow rate.

A direct injection sprayer was designed using the concepts of injection mixing and total flow control, flowrate-based system compensating for the variation of forwarding speed. A metered rate, proportionally to the actual diluent flow rate, of a tracer chemical was injected directly into the diluent stream. The injection of chemical may improve the precision and safety of chemical application process. The control system was evaluated for the variables of the control interval, tolerances and sensitivities of flow regulation valve and injection pump. Performance of the system was assessed as that the response time of flow rate, response time of injection rate, absolute steady state error, and the coefficient of variance(C.V.) of concentration were 8.5 and -0.53 seconds, 0.067 lpm(0.8%) and 3.15%, respectively, at optimal parameters of control interval of 1.0 sec, fast sensitivity of flow regulation valve, medium sensitivity of injection pump and medium tolerance of flow rate. Performance of the system can be improved by increasing the sensitivity of flow regulating valve and employing a high resolution velocimeter, such as Doppler radar.
