A Hidden Markov Model Framework for Aircraft Taxi Mode Inference (은닉 마르코프 모형을 이용한 항공기 지상이동 운항모드 추정 방법 연구)

  • 본 논문에서는 공항 지상 감시 장비(ASDE: Airport Surface Detection Equipment) 데이터를 이용하여 항공기의 지상이동 운항모드를 추정하는 방법을 제안하였다. 제안된 방법에서는 항공기의 운항모드와 그에 따라 관측되는 속도 및 가속도를 확률 변수로 정의함으로써, 확률적 추정방법을 통해 운항모드를 추정하였다. 운항모드를 추정하기 위한 모형으로서는 은닉 마르코프 모형(HMM: Hidden Markov Model)을 사용하였으며 실제 ASDE 데이터를 통해 제안된 방법의 성능을 검증해 보았다.

Estimating the Behavior Path of Seafarer Involved in Marine Accidents by Hidden Markov Model (은닉 마르코프 모델을 이용한 해양사고에 개입된 선원의 행동경로 추정)

  • The conduct of seafarer is major cause of marine accidents. This study models the behavior of the seafarer based on the Hidden Markov Model (HMM). Additionally, through the path analysis of the behavior estimated by the model, the kind of situations, procedures and errors that may have caused the marine accidents were interpreted. To successfully implement the model, the seafarer behaviors were observed by means of the summarized verdict reports issued by the Korean Maritime Safety Tribunal, and the observed results converted into behavior data suitable for HMM learning through the behavior classification framework based on the SRKBB (Skill-, Rule-, and Knowledge-Based Behavior). As a result of modeling the seafarer behaviors by the type of vessels, it was established that there was a difference between the models, and the possibility of identifying the preferred path of the seafarer behaviors. Through these results, it is expected that the model implementation technique proposed in this study can be applied to the prediction of the behavior of the seafarer as well as contribute to the prioritization of the behavior correction among seafarers, which is necessary for the prevention of marine accidents.

Design of A Speech Recognition System using Hidden Markov Models (은닉 마코프 모델을 이용한 음성 인식 시스템 설계)

  • This paper proposes an algorithm and a model topology for the connected speech recognition using Discrete Hidden Markov Models. A proposed model uses diphone and triphone model which consider the recognition rate and recognisable vocabulary. Considering more exact inter- phoneme segmentation and execution speed of algorithm, 4 states have to exist in diphone model where the first state and the last state are keeping a steady state, the other states hold a transient state. 7 states have to exist in triphone model where 7 states are specified and improved to 3 steady states and 4 transition states. Also, the proposed speech recognition algorithm is designed to detect the inter-phoneme segmentation during the recognition processing.

  • Distinct from the Markov random field or pseudo 2D HMM models for image analysis, this paper proposes a new model of 2D hidden Markov mesh chain(HMMM) model which subsumes the definitions of and the assumptions underlying the conventional HMM. The proposed model is a new theoretical realization of 2D HMM with the causality of top-down and left-right progression and the complete lattice constraint. These two conditions enable an efficient mesh decoding for model estimation and a recursive maximum likelihood estimation of model parameters. Those algorithms are developed in theoretical perspective and, in particular, the training algorithm, it is proved, attains the optimal set of parameters.

  • Forecasting future drought events in a region plays a major role in water management and risk assessment of drought occurrences. The creeping characteristics of drought make it possible to mitigate drought's effects with accurate forecasting models. Drought forecasts are inevitably plagued by uncertainties, making it necessary to derive forecasts in a probabilistic framework. In this study, a new probabilistic scheme is proposed to forecast droughts, in which a discrete-time finite state-space hidden Markov model (HMM) is used aggregated with the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP) precipitation projection (HMM-RCP). The 3-month standardized precipitation index (SPI) is employed to assess the drought severity over the selected five stations in South Kore. A reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is used for inference on the model parameters which includes several hidden states and the state specific parameters. We perform an RCP precipitation projection transformed SPI (RCP-SPI) weight-corrected post-processing for the HMM-based drought forecasting to derive a probabilistic forecast that considers uncertainties. Results showed that the HMM-RCP forecast mean values, as measured by forecasting skill scores, are much more accurate than those from conventional models and a climatology reference model at various lead times over the study sites. In addition, the probabilistic forecast verification technique, which includes the ranked probability skill score and the relative operating characteristic, is performed on the proposed model to check the performance. It is found that the HMM-RCP provides a probabilistic forecast with satisfactory evaluation for different drought severity categories, even with a long lead time. The overall results indicate that the proposed HMM-RCP shows a powerful skill for probabilistic drought forecasting.

  • The control rod drive system is critical to the reactor's reliable operation. The performance of its control system and mechanical system will gradually deteriorate because of operational and environmental stresses, thus increasing the reactor's operational risk. Currently there are few researches on the aging-related degradation of the entire control rod drive system. Because it is difficult to quantify the effect of various environmental stresses and establish an accurate physical model when multiple mechanisms superimposed in the degradation process. Therefore, this paper investigates the aging-related degradation of a control rod drive system by integrating Dynamic Object-Oriented Bayesian Network and Hidden Markov Model. Uncertainties in the degradation of the control system and mechanical system are addressed by using fuzzy theory and the Hidden Markov Model respectively. A system which consists of eight control rod drive mechanisms divided into two groups is used to demonstrate the method. The aging-related degradation of the control rod drive system is analyzed by the Bayesian inference algorithm based on the accelerated life test data, and the impact of different operating schemes on the system performance is also investigated. Meanwhile, the components or units that have major impact on the system's performance are identified at different operational phases. Finally, several essential safety measures are suggested to mitigate the risk caused by the system degradation.

A Segmentation-Based HMM and MLP Hybrid Classifier for English Legal Word Recognition (분할기반 은닉 마르코프 모델과 다층 퍼셉트론 결합 영문수표필기단어 인식시스템)

  • In this paper, we propose an HMM(Hidden Markov modeJ)-MLP(Multi-layer perceptron) hybrid model for recognizing legal words on the English bank check. We adopt an explicit segmentation-based word level architecture to implement an HMM engine with nonscaled and non-normalized symbol vectors. We also introduce an MLP for implicit segmentation-based word recognition. The final recognition model consists of a hybrid combination of the HMM and MLP with a new hybrid probability measure. The main contributions of this model are a novel design of the segmentation-based variable length HMMs and an efficient method of combining two heterogeneous recognition engines. ExperimenLs have been conducted using the legal word database of CENPARMI with encouraging results.

Human Activity Recognition Using Body Joint-Angle Features and Hidden Markov Model

  • This paper presents a novel approach for human activity recognition (HAR) using the joint angles from a 3D model of a human body. Unlike conventional approaches in which the joint angles are computed from inverse kinematic analysis of the optical marker positions captured with multiple cameras, our approach utilizes the body joint angles estimated directly from time-series activity images acquired with a single stereo camera by co-registering a 3D body model to the stereo information. The estimated joint-angle features are then mapped into codewords to generate discrete symbols for a hidden Markov model (HMM) of each activity. With these symbols, each activity is trained through the HMM, and later, all the trained HMMs are used for activity recognition. The performance of our joint-angle-based HAR has been compared to that of a conventional binary and depth silhouette-based HAR, producing significantly better results in the recognition rate, especially for the activities that are not discernible with the conventional approaches.

  • In this paper, we carried out the performance evaluation of HM-Net(Hidden Markov Network) speech recognition system for Korean speech databases. We adopted to construct acoustic models using the HM-Nets modified by HMMs(Hidden Markov Models), which are widely used as the statistical modeling methods. HM-Nets are carried out the state splitting for contextual and temporal domain by PDT-SSS(Phonetic Decision Tree-based Successive State Splitting) algorithm, which is modified the original SSS algorithm. Especially it adopted the phonetic decision tree to effectively express the context information not appear in training speech data on contextual domain state splitting. In case of temporal domain state splitting, to effectively represent information of each phoneme maintenance in the state splitting is carried out, and then the optimal model network of triphone types are constructed by in the parameter. Speech recognition was performed using the one-pass Viterbi beam search algorithm with phone-pair/word-pair grammar for phoneme/word recognition, respectively and using the multi-pass search algorithm with n-gram language models for sentence recognition. The tree-structured lexicon was used in order to decrease the number of nodes by sharing the same prefixes among words. In this paper, the performance evaluation of HM-Net speech recognition system is carried out for various recognition conditions. Through the experiments, we verified that it has very superior recognition performance compared with the previous introduced recognition system.

  • TMHMM(Tied Mixture Hidden Markov Model) is an important approach to reduce the number of free parameters in speech recognition. However, this model suffers from a degradation in recognition accuracy due to its GPDF (Gaussian Probability Density Function) clustering error. This paper proposes a clustering algorithm, called HCNN(Homogeneous Centroid Neural network), to cluster acoustic feature vectors in TMHMM. Moreover, the HCNN uses the heterogeneous distance measure to allocate more code vectors in the heterogeneous areas where probability densities of different states overlap each other. When applied to Korean digit isolated word recognition, the HCNN reduces the error rate by 9.39% over CNN clustering, and 14.63% over the traditional K-means clustering.
