The silver selenide electrode has been prepared and its properties as an indicating electrode for silver ion have been investigated. Epoxy resin was used as a filler of silver selenide electrode. Silver metal plate was directly connected with the membrane of the electrode and the silver paste was used as its binder. The sintered electrode was more sensitive and stable than the pressed electrode, and the silver selenide electrode more sensitive than the silver sulfide electrode to silver ion. The linear relationship between the electrode potential and logarithmic concentration of silver ion has been observed down to 10-6 M for the electrode. Several heavy metal ions except mercuric ion did not interfere this linearity, but halide, cyanide, and thiocyanate ions did intensively interfere owing to the formation of silver compounds and complexes. This electrode has been applied to the potentiometric titration for determining halide ion. It is concluded that interferences from ,$CN^-, SCN^-, S^-, I^-, Br^-, Cl^- and Hg^{2+}$ ions are detrimental to the practical use of the electrodes for measuring pAg.
The electrochemical behaviors of copper-1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol [Cu(II)-TAN] complex in acetonitrile (AN) solution have been investigated by the use of polarography, controlled potential coulometry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Cu(II)-TAN complex exhibit three reduction waves at -0.91 V, -1.34 V and -1.65 V vs. S.C.E. in acetonitrile solution containing 5.0 ${\times}\;10^{-3}$M tetraethylammonium perchlorate. Every reduction wave is diffusion controlled. The first reduction wave is considerably reversible and this process is attributed to the formation of anion radical. The second reduction process to the dianion is followed by a chemical reaction producing a complex of hydrazo complex. The third reduction process produce Cu(Hg) amalgam and amine compound.

A potentiometric sensor based on the Schiff base $(N^2E,N^{2'}E)-N^2,N^{2'}$-bis(thiophen-2-ylmethylene)-1,1'-binaphthl-2,2'-diamine has been synthesized and explored as an ionophore PVC-based membrane sensor selective for the silver ($Ag^+$) ion. Potentiometric investigations indicate a high affinity of this receptor for the silver ion. Seven membranes have been fabricated with different compositions, with the best performance shown by the membrane with an ionophore composition (w/w) of: 1.0 mg, PVC: 33.0 mg, DOA: 66.0 mg in 1.0 mL THF. The sensor worked well within a wide concentration range of $1.0{\times}10^{-2}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M, at pH 5, at room temperature (slope 57.4 mV/dec.), and with a rapid response time of 9 s; the sensor also showed good selectivity towards the silver ion over a huge number of interfering cations, with the highest selectivity coefficient for $Hg^{2+}$ at -3.7. Thus far, the best lower detection limit was $4.0{\times}10^{-8}$ M.
In a stream of aqueous sample, trace arsenic ions were quantitatively coprecipitated and detected in ICP-AES through hydride generation. In was used as a coprecipitating reagent. The precipitate was collected on a filter and dissolved by HCl. The eluted As was sent into the reaction coil to generate hydrides and analyzed by ICP. With optimal conditions, and with a sample of 0.3 mL, an enrichment of 70 was obtained with the sampling speed of 10/hr. When compared with coprecipitation and hydride generation technique, the sensitivity was increased by 7 and 10 times, respectively. The limit of detection limit$(3{\sigma})$ was 0.020 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and the precision was 7-10%. Separation of $As^{3+}\;and\;As^{5+}$ were possible using citric acid in hydride generation.
A simple and cost effective method for separation and preconcentration of Ag(I) at the $10^{-7}\;mol\;L^{-1}$ level in the environmental and mineral samples is present. The method is based on the flotation of Ag(I)-iodide complex as an ion-associate with ferroin in pH of 4 from a large volume of an aqueous solution (500 mL) using nheptane. The floated layer was then dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) for the subsequent spectrophotometric determination. Beer's law was obeyed over a range of 2.0 ${\times}$$10^{-7}$-4.0 ${\times}$$10^{-6}$ mol $L^{-1}$ with the apparent molar absorptivity of 2.67 ${\times}$$10^5$ L $mol^{-1}\;cm^{-1}$. The detection limit (n = 5) was 4 ${\times}$$10^{-8}$ mol $L^{-1}$, and RSD (n = 5) obtained for 2.0 ${\times}$$10^{-6}$ mol $L^{-1}$ of Ag(I) was 2.2%. The interference effects of a number of elements was studied and found that only $Hg^{2+}$ at low concentration, and $Pb^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Fe^{3+}$ ions at moderately high concentrations were interfered. To overcome on these interference effects, the solution was treated with EDTA at a buffering pH of 4 and passed through a column containing Amberlite IR-120 ionexchanger resin, just before the flotation process. The proposed method was applied to determine of Ag(I) in a synthetic waste water, a photographic washing sample and a geological sample and the results was compared with those obtained from the flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The results were satisfactorily comparable with together, so that the applicability of the proposed method was confirmed in encountering with the real samples.
A porous stainless steel (SUS) as a substrate of silica composite membranes for hydrogen purification was used to improve mechanical strength of the membranes for industrial application. The SUS support was successfully modified by using submicron Ni powder, $SiO_2$ sols with particle size of 500 nm and 150 nm in turns. Silica top layer was coated on the modified supports under various preparation conditions such as calcination temperature, dipping time and repeating number of dipping-drying process. The calcination temperature for proper sintering was between H ttig temperature and Tamman temperature of the coating materials. Maximum hydrogen selectivity was investigated by changing dipping time. As repeating number of dipping-drying process increased, permeances of nitrogen and hydrogen were decreased and $H_2/N_2$ selectivity was increased due to the reduction of non-selective pinholes and mesopores. For the silica membrane prepared under optimized conditions, permeance of hydrogen was about $3\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;cm^3{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}cmHg^{-1}$ combined with $H_2/N_2$ seletivity of about 20.
Protease widely exists in the digestive tract of animals and humans, playing a very important role in protein digestion and absorption. In this study, a high protease-producing strain Planomicrobium sp. L-2 was isolated and identified from the digestive tract of Octopus variabilis. The strain was identified by physiological and biochemical experiments and 16S rDNA sequences analysis. A protease was obtained from the strain Planomicrobium sp. L-2 through ammonium sulfate precipitation, dialysis and enrichment, DEAE-Sephadex A50 anion-exchange chromatography, and Sephadex G-100 gel chromatography. The molecular weight and properties of the protease were characterized, including optimum temperature and pH, thermal stability, protease inhibitions and metal ions. According to our results, the protease from Planomicrobium sp. L-2 strain designated as F1-1 was obtained by three-step separation and purification from crude enzyme. The molecular weight of the protease was 61.4 kDa and its optimum temperature was $40^{\circ}C$. The protease F1-1 showed a broad pH profile for casein hydrolysis between 5.0~11.0. No residual activity was observed after incubation for 40 min at $60^{\circ}C$ and 60 min at $50^{\circ}C$. F1-1 protease was inhibited by $Mn^{2+}$, $Hg^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cu^{2+}$ ions, as well as PMSF, indicating that the protease F1-1 was a serine protease. Additionally, research basis provided by this study could be considered for industrial application of octopus intestinal proteases.
This study was performed to assess the nutritional status of nursing home residents and to assess the effect of nutrition intervention. The subjects were 123 people aged over 60 years from 5 different nursing homes. The nutrition intervention study was carried out by supplementing their diet with multivitamin-minerals for 2 months. The mean intakes of most nutrients did not meet the RDA, Though the nutrient content of the menus provided by the facilities were satisfactory. Nutrients of which intakes fell below 75% of the RDA were protein, Ca, Fe, vitamin A vitamin B$_1$, and vitamin B$_2$. The BMIs of male and female subjects were 22.0kg/$m^2$ and 24.6kg/$m^2$ and the WHRs were 0.92 and 0.90, respectively. The percentage of subjects with hypertention (BP$\geq$140/90mmHg) and with anemia(Hb$\leq$13mg/100$m\ell$ in men, Hb$\leq$12mg/100$m\ell$ in women) were 34.6% and 41.9%, respectively. The serum cncentrations of albumin, total protein, triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and total lipid fell within normal ranges. However, 27.5% of the subjects showed a high serum cholesterol level of over 250mg/100$m\ell$. The concentration of C3 was 81.2mg/100$m\ell$, IgG, 1343mg/100$m\ell$, and IL-2, 0.766mg/$m\ell$. after 2 months of vitamin-mineral supplementation, the levels of blood glucose and total cholesterol were significantly decreased and triglyceride was significantly increased. The vitamin-mineral supplementation had no effect on the mean levels of vitamin A and E, IgG, IL2, and C3. However, the intervention resulted int he improvement of serum vitamin A and E levels when the subject\`s serum levels were low before the supplementation.

The air-flow dyeing machine is a new type of dyeing machine. Which is an energy saving type to be able to dye the fabrics with the lowest liquor ratio and in shorter time. This machine is operated with an aerodynamic system rather than a hyd raulic system for traditional jet or overflow dyeing. An air-flow dyeing machine(Green-flow) by the use of aerodynamic technology was developed and compared with the Luft-roto machine made by Thies Company, Germany, in this study. Three samples were dyed with both machines under the same dyeing conditions and color fastness, dyeing levelness, drapability, and mechanical properties of these samples were compared. The results were as follows; Both machines have almost the same dyeability. The dyeability was good at liquor ratio of 1: 3.5 and the speed of 450yds/min. The order for drapability was Crepe de Chine > Cool Peach > Charmeuse. Except for the color fastness of sublimation being below class 4, most color fastness of samples dyed with Green-flow m/c were above class 4. The maximum speed was 510yds/min. for Crepe de Chine and the standard deviation of K/S value was lower for Charmeuse and Cool Peach when employed on the "Green-flow" machine and lower for Crepe de Chine when employed on the Luft-roto machine. Comparing with dyeing of the Green-flow machine and that of the Luft-roto machine, the RT of the Charmeuse was found to be higher with the Green-flow machine and thus the sample had an improved wrinkle recovery. LT and WT of Cool Peach were higher, and shear properties(G, 2HG, 2HGS) of Crepe de Chine were higher, both turning out as suitable for clothing. clothing.
Rhodoto& ghtbth~ K-24 was found to produce external invertase in addition to internal and cell wall bound invertase. External invertase was purified to an electrophoretically homogeneous state and partitally characterized and was compared with internal and cell wall bound invertase of which procedures for purification and characterization were reported previously. The enzyme was purified by ethanol precipitation, column chromatographies on DEAE-Sephadex A-50 and SP-Sephadex C-50, and gel filtration on Sephadex G-100. The molecular weight and subunit molecular weight of external invertasGwere estimated to be 220,000 and 100,000, respectively. The isoelectric point of the enzyme was about pH 6.0. The optimum pH and temperature for enzyme activity were pH 4.0 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme remained stable at the wide range, from pH 3.0 to 11.0 and stable up to $40^{\circ}C$, but was inactivated at temperatures above that. $HgC_12, AgN0_3, MnS0_4$, SDS and p-CMB inhibited the enzyme activity. The $K_m$ value of the enzyme for sucrose was $1.0\times 10^{-2}$M. From these results, the three isozymes from Rh. glutinis K-24 seem to have the similar enzymatic properties, but to differ in molecular and subunit weights.
