Scheduling for a Two-Machine, M-Parallel Flow Shop to Minimize Makesan

  • This paper considers the problem of two-machine, M-parallel flow shop scheduling to minimize makespan, and proposes a series of heuristic algorithms and a branch and bound algorithm. Two processing times of each job at two machines on each line are identical on any line. Since each flow-shop line consists of two machines, Johnson's sequence is optimal for each flow-shop line. Heuristic algorithms are developed in this paper by combining a "list scheduling" method and a "local search with global evaluation" method. Numerical experiments show that the proposed heuristics can efficiently give optimal or near-optimal schedules with high accuracy. with high accuracy.

Parameter-setting-free algorithm to determine the individual sound power levels of noise sources (적응형 파라미터 알고리즘을 이용한 개별 소음원의 음향파워 예측 연구)

  • PURPOSES : We propose a parameter-setting-free harmony-search (PSF-HS) algorithm to determine the individual sound power levels of noise sources in the cases of industrial or road noise environment. METHODS :In terms of using methods, we use PSF-HS algorithm because the optimization parameters cannot be fixed through finding the global minimum. RESULTS:We found that the main advantage of the PSF-HS heuristic algorithm is its ability to find the best global solution of individual sound power levels through a nonlinear complex function, even though the parameters of the original harmony-search (HS) algorithm are not fixed. In an industrial and road environment, high noise exposure is harmful, and can cause nonauditory effects that endanger worker and passenger safety. This study proposes the PSF-HS algorithm for determining the PWL of an individual machine (or vehicle), which is a useful technique for industrial (or road) engineers to identify the dominant noise source in the workplace (or road field testing case). CONCLUSIONS : This study focuses on providing an efficient method to determine sound power levels (PWLs) and the dominant noise source while multiple machines (or vehicles) are operating, for comparison with the results of previous research. This paper can extend the state-of-the-art in a heuristic search algorithm to determine the individual PWLs of machines as well as loud machines (or vehicles), based on the parameter-setting-free harmony-search (PSF-HS) algorithm. This algorithm can be applied into determining the dominant noise sources of several vehicles in the cases of road cross sections and congested housing complex.

An Efficient Algorithm for Similarity Search in Large Biosequence Database (대용량 유전체를 위한 효율적인 유사성 검색 알고리즘)

  • Since the size of biosequence database grows exponentially every year, it becomes impractical to use Smith-Waterman algorithm for exact sequence similarity search. For fast sequence similarity search, researchers have been proposed heuristic methods that use the frequency of characters in subsequences. These methods have the defect that different sequences are treated as the same sequence. Because of using only the frequency of characters, the accuracy of these methods are lower than Smith-Waterman algorithm. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which processes query efficiently by indexing the frequency of characters including the positional information of characters in subsequences. The experiments show that our algorithm improve the accuracy of sequence similarity search approximately 5${\sim}$20% than heuristic algorithms using only the frequency of characters.

  • This paper proposes a method of solving a unit commitment problem using parallel tabu search(PTS) approach. Tabu search is a heuristic optimization method that has the tabu list to control the search process. To improve the searching ability of a global solution, we used a method of exchanging solutions among connected processors as a diversification strategy, and to reduce the computation time, a new evaluating method was proposed which evaluates only a changed par. To show the usefulness of the proposed method, we simulated for 10 units system and 110 units system. Numerical results show improvements in the generation costs and the computation time compared with other conventional methods.

  • Vehicle routing problem with time windows is determined each vehicle route in order to minimize the transportation costs. All delivery points in geography have various time restriction in camparision with the basic vehicle routing problem. Vechicle routing problem with time windows is known to be NP-hard, and it needs a lot of computing time to get the optimal solution, so that heuristics are more frequently developed than optimal algorithms. This study aims to develop a heuristic method which combines guided local search with a tabu search in order to minimize the transportation costs for the vehicle routing assignment and uses ILOG programming library to solve. The computational tests were performed using the benchmark problems.

  • This paper proposes an expert system that can enhance the accuracy of real-time bus reconfiguration strategy by adopting the local minimum tree search method and that can minimize the spreading effect of the fault by considering the operating condition when a main transformer fault occurs in an automated substation. The local minimum tree search method is used to expand the best-first search method. This method has the advantage that it can improve the solution performance within the limits of the real-time condition. The inference strategy proposed expert system consists of two stages. The first stage determines the switching candidate set by searching possible switching candidates starting from the main transformer or busbar related to the event. The second stage determines the rational real-time bus reconfiguration strategy based on heuristic rules from the obtained switching candidate set. Also, this paper proposes generalized distribution substation modeling using graph theory, and a substation database based on the study results is designed.

  • This paper presents an application of heuristic approach to problem of designing reliable network expansion. The problem essentially consists in finding the network topology that satisfies given set of reliability constraints. To efficiently solve the problem, a scatter search approach is proposed. The results of the two experiments show that scatter search is a more suitable approach for finding a good solution or near optimal solution in comparison with genetic algorithm.

  • We present a tabu search (TS) algorithm to minimize maximum lateness on a single machine in the presence of sequence dependent setup times and dynamic job arrivals. The TS algorithm starts with a feasible schedule generated by a modified ATCS (Apparent Tardiness Cost with Setups) rule, then through a series of search steps it improves the initial schedule. Results of extensive computational experiments show that the TS algorithm significantly outperforms a well-known RHP heuristic by Ovacik and Uzsoy, both on the solutions quality and the computation time. The performance advantage is particularly pronounced when there is high competition among jobs for machine capacity.

  • We consider an algorithm for the Crew Scheduling Problem (CSP) based on the Transportation Problem approach. The main flows of the algorithm are arranged in three steps. First we propose a heuristic algorithm of the greedy principle to obtain an initial feasible solution. Secondary we present a method of formulating CSP into a Modified Transportation Problem format. Lastly the procedures of network search to get the optimal solution are presented. This algorithm can be applied to the general GSP and also to most combinatorial problems like the Vehicle Routing Problems. The computational results show that the large size CSP's could be tackled.

  • A binary linear integer program is formulated for the problem of expanding the capacity of a fiber optic network and routing the traffic to deliver new interactive multimedia services. A two-phase Lagrangian dual search procedure and a Lagrangian heuristic are developed. Computational results show superior performance of the two-phase subgradient optimization compared with the conventional one-phase approach.
