  • We consider a rental company that dynamically manages Its capacity level through capacity addition and return While serving customer with its own capacity, the company expands its capacity by renting items from an outside source so that it can avoid lost opportunities of rental which occur when stock is not sufficient. If stock becomes sufficiently large enough to cope with demands, the company returns expanded capacity to the outside source. Formulating the model into a Markov decision problem, we identify an optimal capacity management Policy which states when the company should expand its capacity and when it should return expanded capacity after capacity addition. Since it is intractable to analytically find the optimal capacity management policy and the optimal size of capacity expansion, we present a numerical procedure that finds these optimal values based on the value iteration method. Numerical analysis is implemented and we observe monotonic properties of the optimal performance measures by system parameters, which are meaningful in developing effective heuristic policies.

  • This work proposes a neural network approach to solve vehicle routing problems which have diverse application areas such as vehicle routing and robot programming. In solving these problems, classical mathematical approaches have many difficulties. In particular, it is almost impossible to implement a real-time vehicle routing with multiple vehicles. Recently, many researchers proposed methods to overcome the limitation by adopting heuristic algorithms, genetic algorithms, neural network techniques and others. The most basic model for path planning is the Travelling Salesman Problem(TSP) for a minimum distance path. We extend this for a problem with dynamic upcoming of new positions with multiple vehicles. In this paper, we propose an algorithm based on SOM(Self-Organization Map) to obtain a sub-optimal solution for a real-time vehicle routing problem. We develope a model of a generalized multiple TSP and suggest and efficient solving procedure.

  • This paper presents two analytical approaches to determine the vehicle fleet size for container shuttle service. The shuttle service can be defined as the repetitive travel between the designated places during working period. In the first approach, the transportation model is adopted in order to determine the number of vehicles required. Its advantages and disadvantages in practical application are also discussed. In the second approach, a logical network which is oriented on job is transformed from a physical network which is focused on demand site. Nodes on the logical network represent jobs which include loaded travel, loading and unloading and arcs represent empty travel for the next jobs which include loaded travel, loading and unloading and arcs represent empty travel for the next job. Then a mathematical formulation is constructed similar to the multiple traveling salesman problem (TSP). A solution procedure is carried out based on the well-known insertion heuristic with the real world data.

  • To reduce the signaling tost of paging in mobile communication, sequential paging schemes are proposed by partitioning a location area into several paging areas such that each area is paged sequentially. Necessary conditions for the optimal partition of cells with delay bound are examined by considering the mobiles location probability at each cell. The Optimal Cell Partitioning (OCP) is proposed based on the necessary conditions and the fathoming rule which trims off the unnecessary solution space and expedite the search process. Two Heuristics, BSG and BNC are also presented to further increase the computational efficiency in real-world paging scheme for the next generation mobile systems. The effectiveness of the 1)reposed paging schemes is illustrated with computational results. The Heuristic BSG that performs the search in the most promising solution group outperforms the best existing procedure with the 6-69% gain in paging cost in problems with 100 cells.

  • This study suggests a procedure for designing cellular manufacturing systems (CMS) which are combined with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) using a tandem configuration. So far most of the previous studies have dealt with conventional design problems not considering the layout and the characteristics of transporters used in CMS. A mathematical model is developed using the service time to perform material transfers as a suitable meassure. The service capacity of AGVs and space limitations are also reflected in this model. As the model can be shown strongly NP-hard, a heuristic algorithm is presented, in which each cell is temporarily formed using both the set covering model and similarity coefficients, and then locations of the cells are determined by means of tabu search and finally machine perturbations are carried out. An example problem is solved to demonstrate the algorithm developed.

  • This paper considers an integrated inventory-distribution system with a fleet of heterogeneous vehicles employed where a single warehouse distributes a single type of products to many spatially distributed retailers to satisfy their dynamic demands and the product is provided to the warehouse via procurement ordering from any manufacturing plant or market The Problem is formulated as an Mixed Integer Programming with the objective function of minimizing the sum of inventory holding cost (at the warehouse and retailers), and transportation cost and procurement ordering cost at the warehouse, subject to inventory-balancing constraints, ordering constraints, vehicle capacity constraints and transportation time constraints. The problem is Proven to be NP-hard. Accordingly, a Lagrangean heuristic procedure is derived and tested for its effectiveness through computational experiments with some numerical instances.

  • For many practical and industrial optimization problems where some or all of the system components are stochastic, the objective functions cannot be represented analytically. Therefore, modeling by computer simulation is one of the most effective means of studying such complex systems. In this paper, with discussion of simulation optimization techniques, a case study in machining process for application of simulation optimization is presented. Most of optimization techniques can be classified as single-or multiple-response techniques. The optimization of single-response category, these strategies are gradient based search methods, stochastic approximate method, response surface method, and heuristic search methods. In the multiple-response category, there are basically five distinct strategies for treating the responses and finding the optimum solution. These strategies are graphical method, direct search method, constrained optimization, unconstrained optimization, and goal programming methods. The choice of the procedure to employ in simulation optimization depends on the analyst and the problem to be solved.

  • In this paper,an algorithm is implemented to retrieve the control knowledge from the plant being controlled. And this knowledge is stored to the knowledge base and is continuously modified. A control system which realizes this algorithm generates control knowledge automatically and modifies the knowledge base, which was previously generated, in accordance with the experience of input-output relations. And this kind of system can manipulate knowledge by symbolic descriptions. So this system can be used to implement the heuristic procedure which was difficult to realize through conventional procedural computer languages or numerical techniques.

  • We study the routing problem in all-wireless networks based on cooperative transmissions. We model the minimum-energy cooperative path (MECP) problem and prove that this problem is NP-complete. We hence design an approximation algorithm called cooperative shortest path (CSP) algorithm that uses Dijkstra's algorithm as the basic building block and utilizes cooperative transmissions in the relaxation procedure. Compared with traditional non-cooperative shortest path algorithms, the CSP algorithm can achieve a higher energy saving and better balanced energy consumption among network nodes, especially when the network is in large scale. The nice features lead to a unique, scalable routing scheme that changes the high network density from the curse of congestion to the blessing of cooperative transmissions.

  • An adaptive modulation scheme is presented for multiuser orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems. The aim of the scheme is to minimize the total transmit power with a constraint on the transmission rate for users, assuming knowledge of the instantaneous channel gains for all users using a combined bit-loading and subcarrier allocation algorithm. The subcarrier allocation algorithm identifies the appropriate assignment of subcarriers to the users, while the bit-loading algorithm determines the number of bits given to each subcarrier. The proposed bit-loading algorithm is derived from the geometric progression of the additional transmission power required by the subcarriers and the arithmetic-geometric means inequality. This algorithm has a simple procedure and low computational complexity. A heuristic approach is also used for the subcarrier allocation algorithm, providing a trade-off between complexity and performance. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms provide comparable performance with existing algorithms with low computational cost.
