  • This research was carried out to investigate equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of wood in outdoor locations in Korea. EMC was calculated using Hailwood-Horrobin equation for 73 different locations in Korea using the 1981 to 2010 climate normal data obtained from the Korea Meteorological Admnistration (KMA). Daegu showed the lowest values of EMC (11.5), and the highest EMC values (15.8) was found in Heuksando. Considering the season effect, summer (June, July, August) showed the highest values 15.3, followed by autumn (September, October, November) 13.7, winter (December, January, February) 12.2, and spring (February, March, April) 12.0. Monthly EMC showed the lowest values 11.6 in April and July showed the highest EMC values 16.1. The smallest changes in monthly EMC were found in Jeju island and Heuksando showed the largest values 8.7. A proper wood drying based on average EMC is more required in the regions with larger variation in EMC.

  • The variation of atmospheric conditions including subrefraction, normal refraction, superrefraction, and ducting is an important factor that affects the quality of radar data by controling the propagation of radar beams. The occurrence frequency of the conditions is statistically analyzed using the atmospheric soundings from seven radiosonde stations in South Korea over two years. The occurrence of superrefraction and ducting at Baengnyeongdo is significantly higher than the others. Osan and Kwangju show significant variation in time. Among the different duct conditions, the surface duct is dominant at most stations except for Gosan. The elevated duct is dominant at Heuksando and Gosan. Duct is more frequent in summer than in winter at all stations. Baengnyeongdo shows the most frequent duct in spring, fall, and winter while Pohang had the highest frequency in summer. Osan and Kwangju show least duct during all seasons. The difference of variation of monthly duct occurrence between 00 UTC and 12 UTC is insignificant at all stations except for Osan and Kwangju. Kwangju, Heuksando and Gosan show relatively low frequency of duct with the monthly maximum barely reaching 60%. The highest number of elevation angles that are affected by duct was four at Osungsan radar (KSN). The maximum elevation angle is around $1.0^{\circ}$ at all stations and Jindo radar (JNI) shows the maximum value of $1.2^{\circ}$.

  • To determine the status of sunfish fishery, fishing places, body size, weight, etc. were investigated from 2010 to 2012 in Busan Cooperative Fish Market. Most of the sunfish were caught by large purse seine around Jeju island, and the fishing ground of sunfish were reached from Heuksando in the southern Yellow Sea to Guryongpo in the southern East Sea. The range of total length (TL) of the sunfish caught by purse seine was 55-271 cm, and the estimated length-weight relationship was $BW=8E-06TL^{3.3797}$. From the relationship, the weight of 50 cm in total length was estimated to be ca. 4 kg, TL 100 cm was ca 46 kg, TL 200 cm was ca 478 kg, and TL 271 cm was estimated to be 1,336 kg.

  • Hongdo and Huksando belong to the Dadohae national park parks in Korea and are famous sightseeing spots in Shinahn-gun. One of the keystone species in this area is otter (Lutra lutra). We accomplished field works for finding its present habitat and condition analyses for the potential habitat in the area via spatial analyses with digital elevation model and satellite imagery. Isolated condition with coastal cliffs was one of the superior conditions over habitat in the main land, but the road kills of small animals were also observed. Three underground eco-corridors were suggested for the protection of otter habitat in the Shinahn-gun area. Regional development strategies of Shinahn-gun should be focused on the protection of safe and pristine habitat for otter population.

  • In this study, characteristics of fog at Mokpo as the west coastal area of Jeonnam were investigated, using statistical analysis of observed fog and meteorological data. Higher frequency of the fog occurrence at Mokpo was showed in spring(32%) and summer(34%) due to the seasonal high atmospheric pressure. Regional characteristics as radiation cooling, advection of fog and water vapor from surrounding sea and Yeongsan lake, and frontal fog had major effect on the coastal fog at Mokpo on the meteorological conditions of north-west/south wind and calm($0{\sim}2m/s$). Also, as the results of analyzing data of before and after the construction of Yeongsan dam, the frequency of annual mean fog days increased 41 %, specially increased 178% in autumn. The increase of fog days mainly resulted from evaporation during colder seasons and from temperature inversion during warmer seasons over the water surface of Yeongsan lake. The construction of Yeongsan dam had a little effect on the meteorological conditions concerning fog occurrence, because Yeongsan dam which only supplies the water for use do not always carry out outlet of the cold water. In addition, the sea fog at Heuksando located in offshore had not effect on the occurrence of fog at Mokpo.

  • This article summarizes our research on estimation of area-specific and time-adjusted rainfall rates during 2004KEOP (Korea enhanced observation period: June 1, $2004{\sim}$ August 31, 2004). The rainfall rate is defined as the proportion of rainfall days per week and areas are consisting of Haenam, Yeosu, Janghung, Heuksando, Gwangju, Mokpo, Jindo, and Wando. Our objectives are to analyze periodicity in area-specific precipitation and the meteorological measures and investigate the relationships between the geographic pattern of the rainfall rates and the corresponding pattern in potential explanatory covariates such as temperature, wind, wind direction, pressure, and humidity. A generalized linear model is introduced to implement the objectives and the patterns are estimated by considering a set of rainfall rates produced using samples from the posterior distribution of the population rainfall rates.

  • The angle of solar panels is calculated using solar radiation model for the efficient solar power generation. In ideal state, the time of maximum solar radiation is represented from 12:08 to 12:40 during a year at Gangneung and it save rage time is12:23. The maximum solar radiation is 1012$W/m^2$ and 708$W/m^2$ inc lear sky and cloudy sky, respectively. Solar radiation is more sensitive to North-South (N-S) slope angle than East-West (E-W) azimuth angle. Daily solar radiation on optimum angle of solar panel is higher than that on horizontal surface except for 90 days during summer. In order to apply to the real atmosphere, the TMY (typical meteorological Year) data which obtained from the 22 solar sites operated by KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) during 11 years(2000 to 2010) is used as the input data of solar radiation model. The distribution of calculated solar radiation is similar to the observation, except in Andong, where it is overestimated, and in Mokpo and Heuksando, where it is underestimated. Statistical analysis is performed on calculated and observed monthly solar radiation on horizontal surface, and the calculation is overestimated from the observation. Correlationis 0.95 and RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) is10.81 MJ. The result shows that optimum N-S slope angles of solar panel are about $2^{\circ}$ lower than station latitude, but E-W slope angles are lower than ${\pm}1^{\circ}$. There are three types of solar panels: horizontal, fixed with optimum slope angle, and panels with tracker system. The energy efficiencies are on average 20% higher on fixed solar panel and 60% higher on tracker solar panel than compared to the horizontal solar panel, respectively.

  • Heavy rain fall in the Korean Peninsula often occurs in the summer season due to MCC (Mesoscale Convective Complex) with complex mechanism. We analysed the Characteristics and the developing mechanism of MCC occurred at 14 July 2004. The results are as follows: a) There is strong wind inflow from the South-west china sea with heavy moisture and this moisture flux acts as the source of heavy rain, b) Because of the separation of upper and lower atmosphere due to an inversion layer at 600hPa, atmosphere over the Korea Peninsula is suddenly unstable. c) This MCC shows strong shear not with wind direction, but with the wind speed, and this wind shear continues the thermodynamic unstability of the convective system. d) MCC was suddenly developed over Heuksando at 1400LST 14 July 2004. Thus we can say that the topography also was strongly associated with the development of MCC and it is also necessary to clarify the relationship between topography and MCC development. in future research.
