Software adaptation may be required to interact between heterogeneous platforms and to react to rapid change of environment in ubiquitous computing. Web service provides a way to use heterogeneous and distributed services or resources to utilize and organize them. But it is not easy to retrieve appropriate services when we search services because web service lacks of semantic information. Semantic web service provides additional information of services, but it does not support a method to match them in various ways. We can adapt and extend web applications by using web service, but a method for management and administration is still needed. Therefore in this paper, we propose a framework for dynamic growing of web service applications based on ESB(Enterprise Service Bus) and agent and provide a prototype to show its usefulness.
Location-based concierge services (LBCS) are considered to be one of the main service functions provided in a city in ubiquitous technology spaces. A "Ubiquitous City" is defined as a city in which both public and private services can be delivered and received anywhere and anytime. One of the key elements that make location-based concierge services successful is the interoperability of location data. Currently, several existing technologies could provide LBCS including car navigation services and ubiquitous computing. However, lack of standardized structure for location data makes it impossible for heterogeneous technologies to be able to deliver uniform LBCS. The purpose of this paper is to develop standardized locational data structure so that heterogeneous technologies could provide efficient LBCS to all users of the various transportation modes.
In this paper, we perform analysis of the performance of low-power communication technology, IEEE 802.15.4 MAC (Media Access Control) protocol used in internet of things. Wide variety of devices in internet of things generate different kinds of traffic characteristics and heterogeneous traffic environment is therefore considered in contrast to existing works. With the help of the Markov chain the performance of the protocol is derived as a function of the MAC parameters and based on the results a framework to determine energy-efficient optimal MAC parameters for applications in real time is proposed. Proposed method is shown to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption through performance comparison over application scenarios compared to operation with fixing MAC parameters, and its practicability on small devices with limited computing power is verified through evaluating the accuracy and speed of the proposed framework.
Mobile game apps, which are popular in various mobile devices, tend to be power-hungry and rapidly drain the device's battery. Since a long battery lifetime is a key design requirement of mobile devices, reducing the power consumption of mobile game apps has become an important research topic. In this paper, we investigate the power consumption characteristics of popular mobile games with multiple threads, focusing on the inter-thread. From our power measurement study of popular mobile game apps, we observed that some of these apps have abnormally high-load threads that barely affect the user's gaming experience, despite the high energy consumption. In order to reduce the wasted power from these abnormal threads, we propose a novel technique that detects such abnormal threads during run time and reduces their power consumption without degrading user experience. Our experimental results on an Android smartphone show that the proposed technique can reduce the energy consumption of mobile game apps by up to 58% without any negative impact on the user's gaming experience.
Embedded system is tightly coupled with heterogeneous layers such as application, as kernel, device driver, HAL and hardware. Embedded system is customized for the specific purpose and hardware. In addition, the product cycle is so fast that software and hardware, which are developed by several vendors, are integrated together under unstable status. Therefore, there are lots of possibilities of faults in all layers. Because embedded software developers test their codes integrated with faulty layers, they cannot confirm 'whether testing of every aspects was completed, their code was failed, or integrated software/hardware has some problems'. In this paper, we propose an embedded software interface test method and a test tool called Justitia for detecting faults and tracing causes in the interface among heterogeneous layers. The proposed technique is an automated method which improves debugging upto professional testing using an emulator for helping developer.
Modern network has a complex structure that includes diverse and heterogeneous equipments to cope with multi-purpose functions. For proper administration of networks with complex structures, NETCONF protocol has been proposed. It still, however, has a few unresolved issues with each layer of the protocol. Tackling one of the less attended issues of NETCONF, this article suggests a technique which can efficiently update the configuration data of network equipments when multiple administrators are present. Specifically, for efficient updates of the network equipment configuration, we propose to add a pre-examination of the data dependent to algorithm in 오퍼레이션 layer and modify the data structure for managing XML documents for changing the configurations of network equipments. We have implemented and experimented with our method and confirmed that our approach brought an significant overall performance improvement to NETCONF.
Recent advancements in wireless networks have enabled support for mobile applications to transfer data over heterogeneous wireless paths in parallel using data striping technique [2]. Traditionally, high performance data transfer requires tuning of multiple TCP sockets, at sender's end, based on bandwidth delay product (BDP). Moreover, traditional techniques like Automatic TCP Buffer Tuning (ATBT), which balance memory and fulfill network demand, is designed for wired infrastructure assuming single flow on a single socket. Hence, in this paper we propose a buffer tuning technique at senders end designed to ensure high performance data transfer by striping data at transport layer across heterogeneous wireless paths. Our mechanism has the capability to become a resource management system for transport layer connections running on multi-homed mobile host supporting features for wireless link i.e. mobility, bandwidth fluctuations, link level losses. We show that our proposed mechanism performs better than ATBT, in efficiently utilizing memory and achieving aggregate throughput.
TCP receivers deliver ACK packets to senders for reliable end-to-end transfer. When ACK packets are not transferred properly because of network congestion, the performance of TCP degrades. This paper proposes a reverse congestion warning mechanism and a congestion handling mechanism in heterogeneous networks with heavy background traffic in the backward direction. Help from TCP receivers or hardware such as routers and gateways other than the ACK packets themselves is not necessary. TCP senders compare the arrival intervals of ACK data passed from receivers and the difference in t imestamp values echoed by receivers. According to the simulation results using the NS-2 network simulator, the proposed scheme shows a performance elevation of 20% greater than Reno, 150% greater than New Reno, and 450% greater than Westwood, respectively, under heterogeneous networks and that the error rate of the radio link is 1% when the backward network is congested.

We propose a FPGA based design that performs real-time power-efficient analysis of heterogeneous sensor data using adaptive ANN on edge gateway of smart military wearables. In this work, four independent ANN classifiers are developed with optimum topologies. Out of which human activity, BP and toxic gas classifier are multiclass and ECG classifier is binary. These classifiers are later integrated into a single adaptive ANN hardware with a select line(s) that switches the hardware architecture as per the sensor type. Five versions of adaptive ANN with different precisions have been synthesized into IP cores. These IP cores are implemented and tested on Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA using Microblaze test system and LabVIEW based sensor simulators. The hardware analysis shows that the adaptive ANN even with 8-bit precision is the most efficient IP core in terms of hardware resource utilization and power consumption without compromising much on classification accuracy. This IP core requires only 31 microseconds for classification by consuming only 12 milliwatts of power. The proposed adaptive ANN design saves 61% to 97% of different FPGA resources and 44% of power as compared with the independent implementations. In addition, 96.87% to 98.75% of data throughput reduction is achieved by this edge gateway.

Recent robot software platform research focuses on providing intelligent service via abstraction of robot devices. Context-aware techniques are necessary for intelligent robot services, which are based on the perception of environmental information obtained from heterogeneous sensors in IoT environment. Robot Operating System (ROS) provides protocols to operate robot devices. ROS includes functions for abstracting heterogeneous sensors themselves in order to control the robot, however, it lacks the ability to provide context information that the robot can perceive based on environmental information through consistent collection methods. In this paper, we propose a relay system for ROS to provide context-aware robot service. The proposed system makes it possible for ROS to control and provide context-aware robot services with relay of an external context-aware system and ROS. In experiments, we demonstrate procedures that robot services abstracted from ROS and an external context-aware system works together based on the proposed system.
