1, 4-Diketo-3, 6-diphenyl-pyrrolo-[3, 4c]-pyrrole(abbriviated DPP) is a new heterocyclic pigment of red color whose chlorinated derivative is now on the market. DDP was synthesized from benzonitrile and diethylsuccinate. Pariser-parr-pople(PPP) molecular orbital calculations have been carried out on the DPP in other to study spectroscopically the DPP chromophore on deprotonation.

Two synthetic pathways to substituted hexahydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines, which may serve as precursors of aza-alkaloids, were investigated. The first involves the condensation of a bisnucleophilic enediaminoester and a biselectrophile. The second involves attachment to nitrogen of the carbon chain skeleton required to form the six-memberd ring, before formation of the enediaminoester. Several substituted hexahydroimidazo[1,2- a]pyridines were synthesized via these two approaches.

A simple efficient and neat synthesis of ${\alpha}$-hydroxy phosphonates has been accomplished from aromatic/heterocyclic aldehydes and diethyl phosphite using $KHSO_4$ as a catalyst under solvent-free conditions at ambient temperature. These compounds are characterized by spectral and analytical data and tested for their anti-oxidant activity.

Thirteen compounds were synthesized by condensing the N-heterocyclic amines (piperidine, pyrrolidine, morpholine) and secondary aliphatic amines (dimethylamine, diethylamine) with 3,4-methylenedioxyphenylalkenoic acid chlorides for developing CNS depressants. Among them, N, N-diethyl-3,4-methylenedioxycinnamamide (IX) and N, N-dimethyl-5-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-2, 4-pentadienoic acid amicle (XII) exhibited strong activity in antagonism against pentylenetetrazole-induced convulsion, strychnine-induced convulsion and maximal electroshock seizure. N, N-Dimethyl-3, 4-methylenedioxycinnamide (VIII) showed more potent activity in antagonism against strychnine-induced convulsion and maximal electroshock seizure and in the prolongation of hexobarbital sleeping time.

Various nitrobenzaldehydes were simultaneously allylated and reduced using indium in the presence of HCl in aqueous media to give compounds having both functionality of homoallylic alcohol and aromatic amine. Sequential protection of the amino gro up and oxidation of the anilinyl homoallylic alcohol provided useful precursors of heterocyclic compounds such as dihydroindolones and dihydroquinolones, which could be efficiently synthesized through intramolecular cyclization reaction.

An efficient method of addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehydes by employing a zirconium complex as the catalyst has been described. A variety of aromatic, aliphatic, cyclic and heterocyclic aldehydes has been converted into corresponding trimethylsilyl ethers in excellent yield within short reaction time.

In the field of cephalosporins, introduction of quaternary heterocyclic methyl goups at the C-3 position has led to a new class of cephalosporins such as cefepime and cefpirome, the so-called 4th generation cephalosporins which are characterized by their potent activity. Since than many efforts were attempted to synthesize more effective analogs.

The reaction of either Digitoxin or Digoxin with cyanoacetic acid hydrazide gave the hydrazone derivatives 3a and 3b respectively. The reactivity of the latter products towards chemical reagents was studied to give heterocyclic derivatives with potential biological activities.

Wholly aromatic polybenzoxazoles (PBO) are well established as high performance materials with excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties. Heterocyclic precursor polymers such as polyhydroxyamides (PHA) have been interested in the field of high performance flame retardant polymers. The PHAs can be converted to PBOs when ignited. 일상생활에서 인간은 수많은 물리, 화학적 발암 원에 노출되어 살아가고 있으며 역학적으로 관찰해 보면 모든 암의 약 90％가 환경적 요인에 의하여 발생한다. 식품 중에도 여러 종류의 돌연변이원성 물질과 발암성 물질이 자연적으로 존재하고 있어 그 중 소량은 일상의 보통 식이를 통하여 섭취된다. 특히 단백질이나 아미노산이 풍부한 식품인 고기, 생선의 조리과정에 강력한 돌연변이원성 물질과 발암성 물질로 알려진 N-nitrosoamine(NA)이나 heterocyclic amine(HCA)들이 형성되며 다양한 종류가 분리, 동정 되어왔다.
