  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the cause of the continous increase of Sagittaria trifolia dominance and it's effective control methods in the paddy rice fields. Early physilogical response of S. trifolia caused by sulfonylurea three herbicides resulted in growth cessation. However, the growth-ceased plant regrew after the certain period of time. Pyrazolate{4-[2, 4-dichloro benzoyl]-1, 3-dimethylpyrazol-5-yl-ptoluene sulphonate} could control S. trifolia until 6-7 leaf stages. The herbicidal activity of S. trifolia by pyrazolate was not related to the size of tuber and the amount of carbohydrate consumption in the tuber. The production of S. trifolia tubers inhibited more than 95% by the systematic treatment of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl{Ethyl-5-(4, 6-dimethoxy pyrimidin-2-yl carbomoyl sulfamoyl)-2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl acetanilide}, cinosulfuron and pyrazolate after the first treatment of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and pyrazolate.

  • Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate safening effect of CGA 123'407 (4,6-dichloro-2-phenyl-pyrimidine) against pretilachlor, butachlor, and benthiocarb in rice plants. Butachlor and benthiocarb at 50 ppm or higher concentrations significantly inhibited rice growth and pretilachlor gradually inhibited growth of rice plants with increase in concentration starting from 0.5 ppm. CGA 123'407 at 0.1 ppm or higher concentrations was effective in reducing injury of rice plants when butachlor and benthiocarb were applied at rate of 10 ppm. Rice injury from pretilachlor at 10 ppm was also reduced by addition of CGA 123'407 at 0.25 ppm or higher concentrations Herbicidal activity of pretilachlor, butachlor, and benthiocarb was not affected by mixture treatments of CGA 123'407.

  • Foliar retention of pyribenzoxim (1% EC) was measured using the fluorescent dye rhodamine B, and related to efficacy and phytotoxicity to barnyardgarss (Echinochloa crusgalli) and rice (Oryza sativa cv. Chucheong), respectively. Effects of nozzle types (8002E flat-fan and disk-type), addition of adjuvant, variation of herbicide concentration or spray volume were compared. In barnyardgrass, foliar retention of pyribenzoxim at a recommended condition (application rate : 30g ai/ha, spray volume : 1000 L/ha) was 2.3 to 2.7 or 1.4 to $1.5{\mu}g$ ai/g fresh foliage when sprayed using the disk-type nozzle with or without adjuvant, respectively, and 0.6 to 0.7 or 0.3 to $0.5{\mu}g$ ai/g fresh foliage when sprayed using the flat-fan nozzle with or without adjuvant, respectively. The slope of increase in foliar retention was 1.0 to 1.8 when application rates increased from 10 to 60g ai/ha at 1000 L/ha, while that was 1.6 to 2.4 when spray volume increased from 330 to 2000 L/ha at $30{\mu}g$ ai/L concentration. Foliar retention of pyribenzoxim had a close relationship with herbicidal activity; regardless of spray conditions, retention to provide 90% control was about $0.8{\mu}g$ ai/g fresh foliage, and below this retention amount, efficacy decreased almost linearly. In rice, foliar retention at the recommended condition was 1.9 to 2.3 or 1.2 to $1.3{\mu}g$ ai/g fresh foliage when sprayed using the disk-type nozzle with or without adjuvant, respectively, and 0.6 to 0.9 or $0.3{\mu}g$ ai/g fresh foliage when sprayed using the flat-fan nozzle with or without adjuvant, respectively. The slope of increase in foliar retention was 1.0 to 2.8 when application rates increased from 30 to 120g ai/ha at 1000 L/ha, while that was 1.3 to 4.4 when spray volume increased from 1000 to 4000 L/ha at $30{\mu}g$ ai/L concentration. Despite the great difference in retention, rice phytotoxicity was not observed in any of these spray conditions, suggesting retention differences within 4-fold increase of application rate or spray volume do not affect rice safety. When pyribenzoxim 1EC was sprayed in tank-mix with several other commercial pesticide formulations, its retention to rice foliage tended to increase by 30 to 50%.

  • 3-Chloro-2-[4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-(5-methyl-3-phenyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazol-5-ylmethoxy)-phenyl]-4,5,6,7-tetrahy dro-2H-indazole(EK-5439) demonstrated rice selectivity and herbicidal activity on annual weeds, such as Echinochloa oryzicola, Monochoria vaginalis, Lindernia pyxidaria, Rotala indica, Aneilema keisak, Cyperus difformis, and Ludwigia prostrata at doses of 16-63 g a.i./ha. However, the application window was limited from pre-emergence to 5 days after transplanting. The control efficacy of EK-5439 on barnyardgrass was 4 times higher than that of oxadiazon. EK-5439 was excellently safe to the 16 different transplanted rice cultivars treated 2 days after transplanting. These compounds have the mechanism of action on the chlorophyll biosynthesis like protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase inhibitors.

  • This study was conducted to search new target enzymes of novel herbicide candidate. Total of 107 biochemical inhibitors reported to inhibit over than 100 different plant enzymes were purchased from commercial chemical companies. 15 inhibitors and 34 enzymes were selected by germination assay, seedling assay, wheat leaf disc assay, and whole plant assay. Among them, seven compounds of purine, phehyl-hydrazine, o-phenanthroline, oleylamine, dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, 7,8-benzoquinoline, and aminooxyacetic acid showed high herbicidal activity in the whole plant assay under greenhouse while 7,8-benzoquinone, 8-hydroxyquinoline, 2,2'-dipyridyl, and o-phenanthroline inhibited seed germination of barnyardgrass, rice, and tomato at concentrations of 1.25 to $5{\mu}M$. The compounds of 7,8-benzoquinoline, chlorpromazine, cyanuric fluoride, 4-methylpyrazole, oleylamine, tranylcypromine, and trifluoperazine inhibited the growth of cyanobacteria at 30 to $100{\mu}M$. The compounds of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and chlorpromazine exhibited whitening effect on tile wheat leaf disc at $100{\mu}M$. These results suggest that the plant-specific enzyme inhibitors which have biological activities may supply the target enzyme for developing new herbicide candidate.

  • Selective action of root-treated oxyfluorfen [(2-chloro-4-thrifluoromethylphenyl)-3'-ethoxy-4'-nitrophenyl ether] and chlomethoxynil [2, 4-dichlorophenyl-3'-methoxy-4'-nitrophenyl ether] were investigated. Oxyfluorfen showed greater activity to all plant species than chlomethoxynil. $^{14}C$-oxyfluorfen was little metabolized in roots of the plant species and more slowly absorbed than $^{14}C$-chlomethoxynil. These results suggest that herbicidal activity of oxyfluorfen at the site of action is higher than chlomethoxynil. In the tested plants, rice, barnyardgrass, sorghum, and corn were absorbed less of the oxyfluorfen and chlomethoxynil than the broad leaf plant species. However, no clear relationship was observed between a degree of tolerance and absorption and metabolism of both herbicides by the plant species.

  • The methanol extract of Chloranthus japonicus roots effectively controlled the development of rice blast(Magnaporthe grisea), rice sheath blight(Corticium sasaki), tomato pay mold(Btrytis cinerea), tomato late blight(Phytophthora infestans), and wheat leaf rust(Puccinia recondita). From the methanol extract of C. japonicus roots, three antifungal substances were isolated. Their chemical structures were determined to be shizukanols B, C, and D mainly by mass and NMR spectral data. Among the three substances, shizukanol C showed the strongest inhibitory activity against mycelial growth of the plant pathogenic fungi tested; it completely inhibited mycelial growth of M. grisea. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and C. acutatum at concentrations of more than $12.5{\mu}g$/ and P. infestans at concentrations of more than $3.13{\mu}g/m\ell$. They also controlled effectively the development of rice blast and wheat leaf rust. On the other hand, they caused phytotoxic symptoms on barley leaves and inhibited the growth of duckweed (Lemna paucicostata) with $EC_{50}$ values of $30.0{\mu}g/m\ell$ for shizukanol B, $49.9{\mu}g/m\ell$ for shizukanol C, and $154{\mu}g/m\ell$ for shizukanol D. In addition, shizukanol C showed an insecticidal activity against brown planthopper (Nilaparavata lugens), peen peach aphid (Myzus persicae), diamond-back moth (Plutella xylostella), and tobacco cutworm (Spodoptera litura) of the 5 arthropod pests tested with mortality values of more than 60% at a concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/m\ell$.

  • The effect of transplanting method of rice seedlings on weed occurrence was investigated at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1983. Rice was transplanted by hand and machine and eleven common herbicides were applied. The greatest weeds were harvested from the plot that rice was not transplanted and more weeds encountered at machine transplanted plot than hand transplanted plot. The degree of weed suppression by rice plant itself was 50% for machine transplatning and 55% for hand transplanting, respectively. Simpson index and community dominance of weed species were the highest in hand transplanting and followed by machine transplanting and no rice plot in order. Rice grain yield was exponentially correlated with the amounts of weed occurrence and more yield loss exhibited at machine transplanting than hand transplanting in the same amount of weeds. In the herbicidal activity, most of herbicides performed better at hand transplanting than machine transplanting while the degree of difference between transplanting methods varied depend on herbicide used.
