  • In this paper, we propose an automatic extraction method of gastric cancer region from electronic endoscopic images. We use the brightness and saturation of HSI in removing noises by illumination and shadows by the crookedness occurring in the endoscopic process. We partition the image into several areas with similar pigments of hemoglobin using IHb. The candidate areas for gastric cancer are defined as the areas that have high hemoglobin pigments and high value in every channel of RGB. Then the morphological characteristics of gastric cancer are used to decide the target region. In experiment, our method is sufficiently accurate in that it correctly identifies most cases (18 out of 20 cases) from real electronic endoscopic images, obtained by expert endoscopists.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate iron status and related factors in female college students residing in Gyeongnam. The subjects were divided into normal (40.8%) and iron deficiency (ID) groups (59.2%) by iron status. Mean height, weight, lean body mass, percent body fat, body mass index, and wrist to hip ratio were not significantly different between the groups, but basic metabolic rate was significantly higher in the normal group than that in the ID group. The levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were significantly higher in the normal group than those in the ID group. However, total iron binding capacity was significantly lower in the normal group than that in the ID group. Daily intake of protein, heme-Fe, niacin, and vitamin C were significantly higher in the normal group than those in the ID group. The mean intake of protein, Fe, niacin, vitamin $B_{12}$, and vitamin C based on the Korean recommended intake (RI) were significantly higher in the normal group than those in the ID group. The mean intakes of Ca, vitamin $B_{12}$, and folate in both groups were < 75% of the Korean RI. In conclusion, increasing dietary heme-Fe and vitamin C may be helpful for preventing ID anemia in female college students.

  • Nutritional Status of 74 elderly Koreans(35 men and 39 women) from middle-income households in Incheon were evaluated in terms of dietary nutrient intakes, anthropometric measurements and biochemical blood analysis. The mean consumptions of all nutrients were lower than R.D.A except iron, thiamine and niacin. However, 25.7% of men and 33.3% of women consumed less amount of iron than 75% of R.D.A. Average body mass index of women was sightly but significantly higher than that of men (P<0.05). Obesity rate and triceps skinfold thickness of women were much higher than those of men (23.3% vs 5.4% and 14.9mm vs 9.6mm, respectively). By judging from amounts of hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum iron, total iron binding capacity, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and transferrin saturation of the elderly, 5.6-33.3% of men and 5.0-33.3% of women seem to be possibly anemic.

  • The effect of oral iron supplementation was assessed on blood iron levels and Pb and Cd levels in erythrocytes, hair and urine of 101 Puchon 5th grade school children with suboptimal iron status. Treatment with 25mg of elemental iron per day for 8weeks resulted in a significant increase in the intake of most nutrients in addition to iron. Iron supplementation resulted in significant improvements in hemoglobin, MU, MCH, MCHC, serum ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, and transferrin saturation of subjects(p<0.05 - p<0.01) and cocomitantly lowered Pb and Cd levels in erythrocytes, hair, and urine(p<0.01). Regression analysis showed that only iron intake contributed to significant increases in hemoglobin and serum ferritin. It seems that 25mg of iron supplementation is safe and adequate to improve iron status in school children with suboptimal iron status and it also has the benefit of alleviating Pb and Cd status. • A newly derived O$_2$ Saturation Model which can be adapted to the design and study of Artificial Lung and Blood Gas Calculator etc. is introduced on the basis of Electrical Equivalent Circuits. The presented 4 stage and 2 stage RC circuits have good correlatons with actual chemical reactions of Hemoglobin and Oxygen. However, from results of computer simulations, 2 stage equivalent model is more accurate than 4 stage and conventional O$_2$ saturation models.

  • Pulse oximetry is a well established non-invasive optical technique for monitoring the SpO$_2$ during anaesthesia, recovery and intensive care. Pulse oximeters determine the oxygen saturation level of blood by measuring the light absorption of arterial blood. The sensors consists of red and infrared light sources and photodetectors. In the measurement of the hemoglobin oxygen saturation, conventional method has required the technique of filtering of remove the noise, and of complex signal processing algorithm. So much time have required to signal processing. In this research, we separate AC signal and DC signal in the stage of signal detection. We filter the noise from each signal and convert A/D. We obtain the SpO$_2$ using the DSP algorithm.

  • We present microscopy based hyperspectral imaging system that successively shows high spatial (micrometer) and temporal resolutions (milisecond), and acquired pseudocolor hemoglobin saturation map a result of various image processing techniques can provide additional information such as oxygen transport, abnormal vascularity and therapeutic effects besides structural and physiological measurements in various diseases. To increase understanding of vascular defects several optical methods of imaging for preclinical/clinical assessment have been developed so far. However, they have some limitations for outcoming resolution and user satisfaction level compared to its cost. A hyperspectral imaging system has shown a wide range of vascular characteristics associated with hypervascularity, aberrant angiogenesis or abnormal vascular remodeling in many diseases. This vascular characteristic is considered as a key component to diagnose and detect a type of disease as evidenced by them.

  • To evaluate iron nutritional status of female college students, fasting blood samples were taken from 76 female students of Kangnung National University. Hemoglobin(Hb), hematocrit(Hct), serum iron(Fe), total iron binding capacity(TIBC) and serum ferritin concentrations were measured and transferrin saturation was calculated. Mean values for Hb, Hct, Fe, TIBC, TS and serum freeitin were 13.64$\pm$1.42g/dl, 40.99$\pm$4.31%, 103.0$\pm$33.3$\mu\textrm{g}$/이, 395.3$\pm$9.07$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 26.58$\pm$9.07$\%$and 26.76$\pm$17.5ng/ml, respectively. Prevalence of iron deficiency greatly varied by indices from 6.8% when judged by Hct to 26.0$\%$ by serum ferritin concentration. The Hb concentration was positively correlated with hematocrit (r=0.5402), serum iron(r=0.2819) and transferrin saturation(r=0.2777)(p<0.05). on the other hand, serum ferritin concentration showed significantly negative correlation with TIBC(r=-0.3196). Two-day dietary intake records were collected from subjects to estimate mean daily iron intake and bioavailability of dietary iron. Mean daily intake of iron was 13.15mg and heme iron intake was 0.83mg which was 6.4% of total iron intake. Total absorbable iron calculated by the method of Monsen was 1.27mg and bioavailability of dietary iron was 9.6%. In the light of high prevalence of iron deficiency based of serum ferritin concentration and low bioavailability of iron in the diet, guidelines about diet should be made to increase the content and bioavailability of iron in the diet if female college students.
